    Radio Astronomical Polarimetry and the Lorentz Group

    In radio astronomy the polarimetric properties of radiation are often modified during propagation and reception. Effects such as Faraday rotation, receiver cross-talk, and differential amplification act to change the state of polarized radiation. A general description of such transformations is useful for the investigation of these effects and for the interpretation and calibration of polarimetric observations. Such a description is provided by the Lorentz group, which is intimately related to the transformation properties of polarized radiation. In this paper the transformations that commonly arise in radio astronomy are analyzed in the context of this group. This analysis is then used to construct a model for the propagation and reception of radio waves.     Dephasing in the semiclassical limit is system-dependent

    Dephasing in open quantum chaotic systems has been investigated in the limit of large system sizes to the Fermi wavelength ratio, L/λF 〉 1. The weak localization correction g wl to the conductance for a quantum dot coupled to (i) an external closed dot and (ii) a dephasing voltage probe is calculated in the semiclassical approximation. In addition to the universal algebraic suppression g wl ∝ (1 + τD/τϕ)−1 with the dwell time τD through the cavity and the dephasing rate τϕ−1, we find an exponential suppression of weak localization by a factor of ∝ exp[− τ~\tilde \tau /τϕ], where τ~\tilde \tau is the system-dependent parameter. In the dephasing probe model, τ~\tilde \tau coincides with the Ehrenfest time, τ~\tilde \tau ∝ ln[L/λF], for both perfectly and partially transparent dot-lead couplings. In contrast, when dephasing occurs due to the coupling to an external dot, τ~\tilde \tau ∝ ln[L/ξ] depends on the correlation length ξ of the coupling potential instead of λ

    A Massive Protostar Embedded in the Scuba Core JCMT 18354-0649S

    We report the discovery of an extremely red object embedded in the massive SCUBA core JCMT 18354-0649S. This object is not associated with any known radio or far-IR source, though it appears in Spitzer IRAC data obtained as part of the GLIMPSE survey. At shorter wavelengths, this embedded source exhibits an extreme color, K – L' = 6.7. At an assumed distance of 5.7 kpc, this source has a near-IR luminosity of ~1000 L_☉. Its spectral energy distribution (SED) rises sharply from 2.1 μm to 8 μm, similar to that of a Class 0 young stellar object. Theoretical modeling of the SED indicates that the central star has a mass of 6-12 M_☉, with an optical extinction of more than 30. As both inflow and outflow motions are present in JCMT 18354-0649S, we suggest that this deeply embedded source is (1) a massive protostar in the early stages of accretion, and (2) the driving source of a massive molecular outflow evident in HCN J = 3-2 profiles observed toward this region

    Families of Graphs With Chromatic Zeros Lying on Circles

    We define an infinite set of families of graphs, which we call pp-wheels and denote (Wh)n(p)(Wh)^{(p)}_n, that generalize the wheel (p=1p=1) and biwheel (p=2p=2) graphs. The chromatic polynomial for (Wh)n(p)(Wh)^{(p)}_n is calculated, and remarkably simple properties of the chromatic zeros are found: (i) the real zeros occur at q=0,1,...p+1q=0,1,...p+1 for npn-p even and q=0,1,...p+2q=0,1,...p+2 for npn-p odd; and (ii) the complex zeros all lie, equally spaced, on the unit circle q(p+1)=1|q-(p+1)|=1 in the complex qq plane. In the nn \to \infty limit, the zeros on this circle merge to form a boundary curve separating two regions where the limiting function W({(Wh)(p)},q)W(\{(Wh)^{(p)}\},q) is analytic, viz., the exterior and interior of the above circle.     Applied regional monitoring of the vernal advancement and retrogradation (Green wave effect) of natural vegetation in the Great Plains corridor

    The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT 2 has shown that digital data products can be effectively employed on a regional basis to monitor changes in vegetation conditions. The TV16 was successfully applied to an extended test site and the Great Plains Corridor in tests of the ability to assess green forage biomass on rangelands as an index to vegetation condition. A strategy for using TV16 on a regional basis was developed and tested. These studies have shown that: (1) for rangelands with good vegetative cover, such as most of the Great Plains, and which are not heavily infested with brush or undesirable weed species, the LANDSAT digital data can provide a good estimate (within 250 kg/ha) of the quantity of green forage biomass, and (2) at least five levels of pasture and range feed conditions can be adequately mapped for extended regions
