    Baseline Childhood Farm Safety Data for Indiana

    A survey of Indiana farm homes was conducted in the winter of 1994-1995 to establish realistic baselines concerning child safety practices for populations in rural Indiana for the purpose of: (1) adjusting interventions to target specific issues where prevention efforts are most needed; and (2) evaluating the effectiveness of safety efforts targeting rural Indiana families. A questionnaire was designed to obtain baseline information for child safety practices on Indiana farms, and a stratified random sample of 1,500 Indiana farms (arrayed by county) was selected from a population consisting of all 60,000 Indiana farms. Survey procedures involved two mailings, and phone interviews with non-respondents, which yielded 597 usable questionnaires.Survey responses indicate that on Indiana farms where children reside or frequently visit, 63% of owner/operators allow children to ride as passengers on tractors and/or combines, and 36% allow children to operate tractors. Survey responses suggest that grandparents are more likely than parents to prohibit potentially dangerous farm activities (e.g., riding on tractors, combines, and grain transport vehicles, and operating tractors and ATVs), while parents are more likely to implement strategic safety practices (e.g., having a fire escape plan, and obtaining CPR/first aid training). Survey results also show that Indiana farm families do not meet national goals for the use of bicycle helmets, child seats/seatbelts, or smoke detectors

    Livestock Manure Windrow Composting Runoff And Infiltration Characteristics from Laboratory Rainfall Simulations

    Windrow-composted livestock manure has been shown to be less hazardous to the environment compared to manure directly applied to cropland and other agricultural areas. Although offsite contaminant losses through runoff and leaching can occur during the composting process, these losses are suspected to increase under different compost moisture conditions and as composted materials mature. This research quantified the effects of windrow-composted livestock manure and straw bedding components on runoff and infiltration characteristics from laboratory rainfall simulations. Compost samples collected on three dates at approximately the beginning (day 0), middle (day 30), and end (day 60) of a June-July 2004 field research windrow composting period were used for this rainfall simulation study. Replicated compost windrow-shaped cross-section samples were constructed in a specially-designed Plexiglas container apparatus for viewing and recording infiltrated leachate wetting front position boundary movement from simulated rainfall events. Runoff and leachate samples were collected and analyzed for drainage volumes and concentrations and total mass losses of sediment, nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), and ortho-phosphorus (PO4-P) during and following rainfall simulation trials. Leachate wetting front position boundary movement was significantly lower for day 60 compost samples compared among day 0 and day 30 compost sample material. Drainage volume analysis results indicated significantly higher average runoff versus leachate volumes within all compost sampling dates, and runoff volumes were significantly higher among day 30 and day 60 compost samples compared to runoff volumes from day 0 compost samples. Average sediment, NO3-N, and PO4-P concentrations were significantly higher in leachate versus runoff within all compost sampling dates. Conversely, the total mass losses of these contaminants were significantly higher in runoff compared to leachate within all compost sampling dates. Results of this study suggest that biological and mechanical functions of the composting process reduced compost sample aggregates and increased compost bulk density. We hypothesize that these changes in compost material structure and porosity volume decreased infiltration and increased runoff sediment, NO3-N, and PO4-P losses during the second and final compost sampling stages of a field windrow composting period

    Regulation of Acetylated Low Density Lipoprotein Uptake in Macrophages by Pertussis Toxin-Sensitive G Proteins

    Class A scavenger receptors (SR-A) mediate the uptake of modified low density lipoprotein (LDL) by macrophages. Although not typically associated with the activation of intracellular signaling cascades, results with peritoneal macrophages indicate that the SR-A ligand acetylated LDL (AcLDL) promotes activation of cytosolic kinases and phospholipases. These signaling responses were blocked by the treatment of cells with pertussis toxin (PTX) indicating that SR-A activates Gi/o-linked signaling pathways. The functional significance of SR-A-mediated Gi/o activation is not clear. In this study, we investigated the potential role of Gi/o activation in regulating SR-A-mediated lipoprotein uptake. Treatment of mouse peritoneal macrophages with PTX decreased association of fluorescently labeled AcLDL with cells. This inhibition was dependent on the catalytic activity of the toxin confirming that the decrease in AcLDL uptake involved inhibiting Gi/o activation. In contrast to the inhibitory effect on AcLDL uptake, PTX treatment did not alter Ī²-VLDL-induced cholesterol esterification or deposition of cholesterol. The ability of polyinosine to completely inhibit AcLDL uptake, and the lack of PTX effect on Ī²-VLDL uptake, demonstrated that the inhibitory effect is specific for SR-A and not the result of non-specific effects on lipoprotein metabolism. Despite having an effect on an SR-A-mediated lipoprotein uptake, there was no change in the relative abundance of SR-A protein after PTX treatment. These results demonstrate that activation of a PTX-sensitive G protein is involved in a feedback process that positively regulates SR-A function

    Sentencing Outcomes of Convicted Child Sex Offenders

    This research examines the sentencing outcomes of convicted child sexual offenders from data collected over an eight year period. Multiple regression and nominal log linear regression are used to examine length of prison sentence, length of probation sentence, and whether or not the convicted offender is actually sent to prison or to probation. While many independent variables appear to be related to sentence outcome, they fall into three categories: characteristics of the offender, characteristics of the victim, and characteristics of the crime. Additionally, while many variables appear related at the bivariate level, when multivariate analysis is applied, fewer variables remain significant and these are mostly from the characteristics of the offense

    Schwartz Centre Rounds: a new initiative in the undergraduate curriculum ā€” what do medical students think?

    Background: Training to be a doctor and caring for patients are recognized as being stressful and demanding. The wellbeing of healthcare professionals impacts upon the wellbeing and care of patients. Schwartz Centre Rounds (SCRs), multidisciplinary meetings led by a trained facilitator and designed for hospital staff, were introduced to enhance communication and compassion, and have since been widely adopted as a way of fostering compassion. The continuum of education suggests that medical students need to develop these attributes in conjunction with resilience and maintaining empathy. The benefits of SCRs in fostering this development in medical students is unexplored. The objective of this study was to examine the potential of SCRs within the undergraduate curriculum. Methods: Two studentā€“focused SCRs were piloted at a major medical school. The sessions were based on the current format implemented across the US and UK: a presentation of cases by a multidisciplinary panel followed by an open discussion with the audience. Participants were asked to complete an evaluative questionnaire immediately following the sessions. Seven students took part in a focus group to explore their views on the SCR. Data sets were examined using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results: Feedback was obtained from 77 % (258/334) Year 5 and 37 % (126/343) Year 6 students. Mean student ratings of the session on a five-point scale, where 1 = poor and 5 = exceptional, were 3.5 (Year 5) and 3.3 (Year 6). Over 80 % of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the presentation of cases was helpful and gave them insight into how others feel/think about caring for patients. Eighty percent said they would attend a future SCR and 64 % believed SCRs should be integrated into the curriculum. Focus group participants felt SCRs promoted reflection and processing of emotion. Students identified smaller group sizes and timing in the curriculum as ways of improving SCRs. Conclusion: Students were positive about SCRs, preferring them to their current reflective practice assignments. Whether this results in sustained benefits to trainee doctors is yet to be explored. Consideration is given to overcoming the challenges that were encountered, such as optimal timing and participation. Staff training and costs are potential obstacles to adoption

    Gene prediction with Glimmer for metagenomic sequences augmented by classification and clustering

    Environmental shotgun sequencing (or metagenomics) is widely used to survey the communities of microbial organisms that live in many diverse ecosystems, such as the human body. Finding the protein-coding genes within the sequences is an important step for assessing the functional capacity of a metagenome. In this work, we developed a metagenomics gene prediction system Glimmer-MG that achieves significantly greater accuracy than previous systems via novel approaches to a number of important prediction subtasks. First, we introduce the use of phylogenetic classifications of the sequences to model parameterization. We also cluster the sequences, grouping together those that likely originated from the same organism. Analogous to iterative schemes that are useful for whole genomes, we retrain our models within each cluster on the initial gene predictions before making final predictions. Finally, we model both insertion/deletion and substitution sequencing errors using a different approach than previous software, allowing Glimmer-MG to change coding frame or pass through stop codons by predicting an error. In a comparison among multiple gene finding methods, Glimmer-MG makes the most sensitive and precise predictions on simulated and real metagenomes for all read lengths and error rates tested
