Determining Faculty Perception of Ownership Rights of Online Course Content in Higher Education

With the ever increasing growth in the number of online courses offered by institutions of higher education, determining ownership of the content of these courses is becoming an important consideration. Many institutions have intellectual property policies in place that are either vague, outdated or non-existent when determining copyright ownership to online courses. Faculty members who are creating these courses are many times investing their own intellect into the course content, which would traditionally invoke copyright ownership over that content. However, courses being offered to students in an online format have created some confusion as to ownership rights over those courses. It is important that faculty members understand their rights to course content when intellectual property is involved. In future faculty development as well as establishment of university copyright policies, ownership rights should be very clearly determined and explained.;The purpose of this study is to determine the variables that most closely correspond to faculty perception of content ownership when developing and teaching online courses. The variables being studied are faculty rank and status within the institution, faculty academic discipline, number of years teaching in higher education and education level of the faculty members. It is based upon these variables that continuing education can be developed and customized for faculty members based upon their experiences within the institution and with regard to content development. Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) was used to determine those variables that were most significantly associated with faculty perception of ownership to content of online courses offered in higher education

Understanding patients’ experiences of hayfever and its treatment: a survey of illness and medication cognitions

Background: Although effective medication for hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) is available, treatment outcomes are often be poor. Patient beliefs influence outcomes in many other diseases. Assessing patients’ beliefs about their illness and medication may identify targets for intervention to optimize self management and lessen disease impact. Objective: The application of validated health-related analytical models (Leventhal’s illness representations and Horne’s beliefs about medications) to explore patients’ understanding and experience of hayfever and its treatment. Methods: Cross-sectional postal questionnaire sent to 20% sample of adults attending four General Practices in South England and prescribed medication for hayfever symptoms in the previous two years. Measures included the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire and the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire. Results: 316/586 questionnaires were returned (54%). Cluster analysis identified two patient groups; those with negative beliefs (n=132) and those with more positive beliefs about hayfever and its treatment (n=182). Those with negative beliefs were more likely to believe that their hayfever would last for a long time, that they have little personal control over their illness and that their treatment is not effective. Conversely, they reported greater consequences, greater emotional impact, less understanding of hayfever and more medication concerns than those with more positive beliefs. Conclusions and clinical relevance: Patients with hayfever fall into two distinct groups: nearly half (41% of those sampled) have negative beliefs about their condition. Eliciting patient beliefs during the consultation may reveal assumptions that differ from those of healthcare professionals. Such beliefs should be considered when negotiating treatment plans

Lack of food access and food consumption patterns of late midlife women in southeast Michigan

Background: Food access is a key social determinant of health for older adults at high risk of chronic disease and physical disability. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis examined correlates of food access and the relationship between food access and food consumption characteristics in a sample of 316 late midlife women from Southeast Michigan in 2015-2016. Results: Lack of food access, defined as access to self-perceived adequate grocery shopping resources in one’s neighborhood, was reported by 20.9% of women. Women who reported lack of food access were less likely to report making meals at home (p=0.02) and had less frequent consumption of fresh fruits (p=0.04), fresh vegetables (p=0.001), and lean meats (p=0.048) as compared to those that did not report a lack of food access (p=0.04, p=0.001, p=0.048). Being African American (OR: 2.49; 95% CI: 1.20-5.17) and experiencing economic stress (OR: 2.86; 95% CI: 2.53-5.33) were major correlates of reporting lack of food access. Conclusion: Interventions to improve food access for midlife women may help address differences in chronic disease risk associated with diet quality among racial/ethnic groups and across socioeconomic status

Miscommunication Among Healthcare Professionals In The Hospital Setting: A Quality Improvement Project

Research has identified that 81% of interruptions during handoff were from the nurse receiving handoff(Rhudy, L., Johnson, M., Krecke, C., Keigley, D., Schnell, S., Maxson, P., McGill, S., & Warfield, K., 2019). Miscommunication in the healthcare field is a considerably large issue. It often times goes unmentioned, which can negatively impact patient’s care. A thorough literature review was conducted and a total of 64 studies were reviewed. Common themes that emerged included language barriers and cultural differences can often be associated with miscommunication in the healthcare setting. With miscommunication and the errors that result from it, trainings and policies have been made in order to reduce the incidence from happening. These include things like teamwork enhancement and communication trainings As a result of this literature review a guideline handout was created to illustrate the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendations) technique for handoff in order to improve how healthcare providers will communicate information about the patients. This guideline will be shared with clinical faculty. The expected results will show an improvement in the communication among healthcare professionals, which will also improve patient outcomes. Self-regulatory coping among community dwelling older adults with multiple chronic conditions

ObjectivesMany older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) frequently experience hospitalizations, functional limitations, and poor quality of life. Outcomes may be improved by promoting self-regulation, which may individuals respond to health threats and manage their health conditions. The aim of this study was to describe self-regulatory coping among older adults with MCC.MethodsA qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews and content analysis and guided by the Common-Sense Self-Regulation Model. Seventeen community-dwelling older adults with two or more chronic conditions participated in our study.ResultsThree themes were developed from the analysis: (1) “I don’t think about it unless something happens": coping in the absence of a health event, (2) "doing what I am supposed to do”: coping during a health event, and (3) “How do I know if what I did works?”: appraisal of coping success.DiscussionSelf-regulatory coping was influenced by individual beliefs and experiences (illness representations), context, self-efficacy and availability of support and resources to cope with MCC. These findings suggest implications for clinical practice and future self-regulation interventions for older adults with MCC
