Ionization behavior of the histidine residue in the catalytic triad of serine proteases
α-Lytic protease is a homologue of the mammalian serine proteases such as trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase, and its single histidine residue belongs to the Asp-His-Ser catalytic triad. This single histidine residue has been selectively enriched in the C-2 carbon with 13C. Magnetic resonance studies of the chemical shift and coupling constant (1Jch) behavior of this nucleus as a function of pH suggest that the imidazole ring is neutral above pH 5 and therefore that the group which is known to ionize with pKa near 6.7 must be the aspartic acid residue.
Implications of these new pKa assignments for the catalytic mechanism of serine proteases are discussed and include the absence of any need to separate charge during catalysis. The histidine residue plays two roles. (a) It insulates the aspartic acid from an aqueous environment and accordingly raises its pKa. (b) It serves as a bidentate base to accept a proton from the serine at one of its nitrogens and concertedly transfer a proton from its other nitrogen to the buried carboxylate anion during formation of the tetrahedral intermediate

According to the invention, an ASIC cell library for use in creation of custom integrated circuits is disclosed. The ASIC cell library includes some first cells and some second cells. Each of the second cells includes two or more kernel cells. The ASIC cell library is at least 5% comprised of second cells. In various embodiments, the ASIC cell library could be 10% or more, 20% or more, 30% or more, 40% or more, 50% or more, 60% or more, 70% or more, 80% or more, 90% or more, or 95% or more comprised of second cells
Optimization of digital designs
An application specific integrated circuit is optimized by translating a first representation of its digital design to a second representation. The second representation includes multiple syntactic expressions that admit a representation of a higher-order function of base Boolean values. The syntactic expressions are manipulated to form a third representation of the digital design
Faddeev calculations of break-up reactions with realistic experimental constraints
We present a method to integrate predictions from a theoretical model of a
reaction with three bodies in the final state over the region of phase space
covered by a given experiment. The method takes into account the true
experimental acceptance, as well as variations of detector efficiency, and
eliminates the need for a Monte-Carlo simulation of the detector setup. The
method is applicable to kinematically complete experiments. Examples for the
use of this method include several polarization observables in dp break-up at
270 MeV. The calculations are carried out in the Faddeev framework with the CD
Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction, with or without the inclusion of an
additional three-nucleon force.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Apollo experiment S-217 IR/radar study of Apollo data
An experiment using Earth based remote sensing radar, infrared eclipse, and color difference data to deduce surface properties not visible in Apollo photography is reported. The Earth based data provided information on the small scale (centimeter sized) blockiness and on the surface chemical composition (titanium and iron contents) of the lunar surface. These deduced surface properties complemented the new Apollo photography, leading to refined geologic interpretations of the lunar surface

According to the invention, a digital design method for manipulating a digital circuit netlist is disclosed. In one step, a first netlist is loaded. The first netlist is comprised of first basic cells that are comprised of first kernel cells. The first netlist is manipulated to create a second netlist. The second netlist is comprised of second basic cells that are comprised of second kernel cells. A percentage of the first and second kernel cells are selection circuits. There is less chip area consumed in the second basic cells than in the first basic cells. The second netlist is stored. In various embodiments, the percentage could be 2% or more, 5% or more, 10% or more, 20% or more, 30% or more, or 40% or more
Experimental search for evidence of the three-nucleon force and a new analysis method
A research program with the aim of investigating the spin dependence of the
three-nucleon continuum in pd collisions at intermediate energies was carried
out at IUCF using the Polarized INternal Target EXperiments (PINTEX) facility.
In the elastic scattering experiment at 135 and 200 MeV proton beam energies a
total of 15 independent spin observables were obtained. The breakup experiment
was done with a vector and tensor polarized deuteron beam of 270 MeV and an
internal polarized hydrogen gas target. We developed a novel technique for the
analysis of the breakup observables, the sampling method. The new approach
takes into account acceptance and non-uniformities of detection efficiencies
and is suitable for any kinematically complete experiment with three particles

The role of the angle of the fibularis longus tendon in foot arch support.
INTRODUCTION: Understanding the contribution of the fibularis longus tendon to the support of the midfoot arches has potential therapeutic applications. This cadaveric study sought to quantify this support across both the transverse arch and medial longitudinal arch and to establish whether a correlation exists between this support and the angle at which the tendon enters the sole. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Markers placed in 11 dissected cadaveric foot specimens defined the arch boundaries. Incremental weights up to 150 N were applied to the fibularis longus tendon to simulate progressive muscle contraction, and associated changes in the transverse and medial longitudinal arch boundaries were recorded. RESULTS: A force of 150 N reduced the transverse arch distance by 4.6 (1.7) mm (mean [SD]) and medial longitudinal arch distance by 6.8 (1.4) mm. The angle of the fibularis longus tendon on the sole correlated well with changes in the transverse arch distance (slope ± s.e. = 0.56 ± 0.13 mm/degree, Pearson r = .83, p = .002) but only weakly with the medial longitudinal arch (0.18 ± 0.18 mm/degree, r = .32, p = .33). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this preliminary study raise the possibility that physical therapies targeting the fibularis longus tendon may be valuable in the management of midfoot arch collapse. The correlation observed with the transverse arch suggests the possibility that surgical modification of the angle of the fibularis longus tendon on the sole may benefit patients with transverse arch collapse
