    Selectable towline spin chute system

    An emergency spin recovery parachute is presented that is housed within a centrally mounted housing on the aft end of an aircraft and connected to a ring fitting within the housing. Two selectively latching shackles connected to separate towlines are openly disposed adjacent the ring fitting. The towlines extend in opposite directions from the housing along the aircraft wing to attachment points adjacent the wing-tips where the other end of each towline is secured. Upon pilot command, one of the open shackles latches to the ring fitting to attach the towline connected thereto, and a second command signal deploys the parachute. Suitable break-away straps secure the towlines to the aircraft surface until the parachute is deployed and the resulting force on the towline attached to the parachute overcomes the straps and permits the towline to extend to the point of attachment to exert sufficient drag on the spinning aircraft to permit the pilot to regain control of the aircraft. To employ the parachute as a drag chute to reduce landing speeds, both shackles and their respective towlines are latched to the ring fitting

    Spin-tunnel investigation of a 1/15-scale model of an Australian trainer airplane

    An investigation was conducted in the Langley Spin Tunnel of the spin and spin-recovery characteristics of a 1/15-scale model of an Australian trainer airplane. The invesigation included erect and inverted spins; configuration variables such as a long tail, fuselage strakes, 20 deg. elevator cutouts, and rudder modifications; and determination of the parachute size for emergency spin recovery. Also included in the investigation were wing leading-edge modifications to evaluate Reynolds number effects. Results indicate that the basic configuration will spin erect at an angle of attack of about 63 deg. at about 2 to 2.3 seconds per turn. Recovery from this spin was unsatisfactory by rudder reversal or by rudder reversal and ailerons deflected to full with the spin. The elevators had a pronounced effect on the recovery characteristics. The elevators-down position was very adverse to recoveries, whereas the elevators-up position provided favorable recovery effects. Moving the vertical tail aft (producing a long tail configuration) improved the spin characteristics, but the recoveries were still considered marginal. An extension to the basic rudder chord and length made a significant improvement in the spin and recovery characteristics.     Increased Phosphorylation of Vimentin in Noninfiltrative Meningiomas

    International audienceBACKGROUND: Tissue invasion or tissue infiltration are clinical behaviors of a poor-prognosis subset of meningiomas. We carried out proteomic analyses of tissue extracts to discover new markers to accurately distinguish between infiltrative and noninfiltrative meningiomas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Protein lysates of 64 different tissue samples (including two brain-invasive and 32 infiltrative tumors) were submitted to SELDI-TOF mass spectrometric analysis. Mass profiles were used to build up both unsupervised and supervised hierarchical clustering. One marker was found at high levels in noninvasive and noninfiltrative tumors and appeared to be a discriminative marker for clustering infiltrative and/or invasive meningiomas versus noninvasive meningiomas in two distinct subsets. Sensitivity and specificity were 86.7% and 100%, respectively. This marker was purified and identified as a multiphosphorylated form of vimentin, a cytoskeletal protein expressed in meningiomas. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Specific forms of vimentin can be surrogate molecular indicators of the invasive/infiltrative phenotype in tumors
