Hyperdeterminants as integrable discrete systems
We give the basic definitions and some theoretical results about
hyperdeterminants, introduced by A. Cayley in 1845. We prove integrability
(understood as 4d-consistency) of a nonlinear difference equation defined by
the 2x2x2-hyperdeterminant. This result gives rise to the following hypothesis:
the difference equations defined by hyperdeterminants of any size are
integrable.
We show that this hypothesis already fails in the case of the

Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I
We show that determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors of a generic
matrix have a non-commutative desingularization, in that we construct a maximal
Cohen-Macaulay module over such a variety whose endomorphism ring is
Cohen-Macaulay and has finite global dimension. In the case of the determinant

Four lectures on secant varieties
This paper is based on the first author's lectures at the 2012 University of

Sail or sink: novel behavioural adaptations on water in aerially dispersing species
Background
Long-distance dispersal events have the potential to shape species distributions and ecosystem diversity over large spatial scales, and to influence processes such as population persistence and the pace and scale of invasion. How such dispersal strategies have evolved and are maintained within species is, however, often unclear. We have studied long-distance dispersal in a range of pest-controlling terrestrial spiders that are important predators within agricultural ecosystems. These species persist in heterogeneous environments through their ability to re-colonise vacant habitat by repeated long-distance aerial dispersal (âballooningâ) using spun silk lines. Individuals are strictly terrestrial, are not thought to tolerate landing on water, and have no control over where they land once airborne. Their tendency to spread via aerial dispersal has thus been thought to be limited by the costs of encountering water, which is a frequent hazard in the landscape.
Results
In our study we find that ballooning in a subset of individuals from two groups of widely-distributed and phylogenetically distinct terrestrial spiders (linyphiids and one tetragnathid) is associated with a hitherto undescribed ability of those same individuals to survive encounters with both fresh and marine water. Individuals that showed a high tendency to adopt âballooningâ behaviour adopted elaborate postures to seemingly take advantage of the wind current whilst on the water surface.
Conclusions
The ability of individuals capable of long-distance aerial dispersal to survive encounters with water allows them to disperse repeatedly, thereby increasing the pace and spatial scale over which they can spread and subsequently exert an influence on the ecosystems into which they migrate. The potential for genetic connectivity between populations, which can influence the rate of localized adaptation, thus exists over much larger geographic scales than previously thought. Newly available habitat may be particularly influenced given the degree of ecosystem disturbance that is known to follow new predator introductions
Valvular regurgitation and surgery associated with fenfluramine use: an analysis of 5743 individuals
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Use of fenfluramines for weight loss has been associated with the development of characteristic plaques on cardiac valves causing regurgitation. However, previously published studies of exposure to fenfluramines have been limited by relatively small sample size, short duration of follow-up, and the lack of any estimate of the frequency of subsequent valvular surgery. We performed an observational study of 5743 users of fenfluramines examined by echocardiography between July 1997 and February 2004 in a single large cardiology clinic.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of at least mild aortic regurgitation (AR) or moderate mitral regurgitation (MR) was 19.6% in women and 11.8% in men (<it>p </it>< 0.0001 for gender difference). Duration of use was strongly predictive of mild or greater AR (<it>p </it>< 0.0001 for trend), MR (<it>p </it>= 0.002), and tricuspid regurgitation (TR) (<it>p </it>< 0.0001), as was earlier scan date (<it>p </it>< 0.0001 for those scanned prior to 1 January 2000 versus later). Increasing age was also independently associated with increased risk of AR and MR (both <it>p </it>< 0.0001). With mean follow-up of 30.3 months, AR worsened in 15.2%, remained the same in 63.1%, and improved in 21.7%. Corresponding values for MR were 24.8%, 47.4% and 27.9%. Pulmonary hypertension was strongly associated with MR but not AR. Valve surgery was performed on 38 patients (0.66% of 5743), 25 (0.44%) with clear evidence of fenfluramine-related etiology.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Regurgitant valvulopathy was common in individuals exposed to fenfluramines, more frequent in females, and associated with duration of use in all valves assessed. Valve surgery was performed as frequently for aortic as mitral valves and some tricuspid valve surgeries were also performed. The incidence of surgery appeared to be substantially increased compared with limited general population data.</p
Active ageing, pensions and retirement in the UK
The ageing population has led to increasing concerns about pensions and their future
sustainability. Much of the dominant policy discourse around ageing and pension provision
over the last decade has focussed on postponing retirement and prolonging employment.
These measures are central to productive notions of âactive ageingâ. Initially the paper briefly
sets out the pension developments in the UK. Then it introduces active ageing and active
ageing policy, exploring its implications for UK pension provision. It demonstrates that a
more comprehensive active ageing framework, which incorporates a life-course perspective,
has the potential to assist the UK to respond to the challenges of an ageing population. In
doing so it needs to highlight older people as an economic and social resource, and reduce
barriers to older peopleâs participation in society
Editing of the urease gene by CRISPR-Cas in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana
Background: CRISPR-Cas is a recent and powerful addition to the molecular toolbox which allows programmable genome editing. It has been used to modify genes in a wide variety of organisms, but only two alga to date. Here we present a methodology to edit the genome of Thalassiosira pseudonana, a model centric diatom with both ecological significance and high biotechnological potential, using CRISPR-Cas. Results: A single construct was assembled using Golden Gate cloning. Two sgRNAs were used to introduce a precise 37 nt deletion early in the coding region of the urease gene. A high percentage of bi-allelic mutations (â€61.5%) were observed in clones with the CRISPR-Cas construct. Growth of bi-allelic mutants in urea led to a significant reduction in growth rate and cell size compared to growth in nitrate. Conclusions: CRISPR-Cas can precisely and efficiently edit the genome of T. pseudonana. The use of Golden Gate cloning to assemble CRISPR-Cas constructs gives additional flexibility to the CRISPR-Cas method and facilitates modifications to target alternative genes or species
Barriers and facilitators to extended working lives in Europe : a gender focus
Background: There is a global imperative to respond to the challenge of a growing âold-age dependency ratioâ by ensuring the workforce is healthy enough to remain in work for longer. Currently more than half of older workers leave before the default retirement age, and in some countries (e.g. the United Kingdom) the time spent in retirement is increasing. At the same time across Europe there is a gender employment gap, with 14.5% fewer female workers between 55-64 years old, and a large variation in the participation of older women in the workforce (ranging from 30%-75%). As older women are under-represented in the workforce, increasing employment in this group has the propensity to go some way towards reducing the old-age dependency ratio to ensure continued economic growth.
Objectives: This review explores the barriers and facilitators to extended working lives in Europe, particularly those than impact on women.
Methods: A systematic mapping review process was undertaken using four electronic databases, Medline, PsychoInfo, Psych Extra via Ovid and Age Line via EBSCO, using the terms, âworkâ, âageingâ, âretirementâ, âpensionâ, âoldâ, âbarrierâ, âextended working lifeâ, âgenderâ, âhealth and wellbeingâ. Hand searching was also carried out in the Journal of Aging and Human Development and the Journal of Ageing and Society.
Results: The search resulted in 15 English language studies published from 1st January 2005 to the current date that met the inclusion criteria.
Key findings: The key factors that influenced decisions to retire or extend working lives in Europe, were health; social factors; workplace factors; and financial security and pension arrangements.
Conclusions and implications of key findings: Health was found to be the most commonly cited barrier to extended working lives in Europe, and a number of social inequalities to work exist by gender. Structural factors exist, such as the gender pay gap, which disadvantage women, while the nature of work itself differs by gender and can have a negative impact on health. Currently women tend to exit the labour market earlier than men, however, changes in the state pension age are resulting in women being required to work for as long as men, in most countries. For women to remain healthy at work, workplaces need to consider a range of interventions, including flexible arrangements to both work and retirement to enable women to balance the demands of work with domestic and caring responsibilities that particularly impact on them
