    Despite the increasing impact and pervasiveness of companiesā€™ law in the United Kingdom, little research has been undertaken to examine its development in the pre-registration, incorporation by charter period (pre-1844) and the ā€˜revolutionā€™ of routine Companies Acts ending the charter monopoly. This work attempts to examine closely the development of the chartered body from its first inception in pre-Norman times through its commercial expansion in the 16th ā€“ early 19th Centuries culminating in its de jure death in 1844 with the rise of the registered corporation. In order to achieve this, both contemporary and modern evidence and commentary has been analysed, and a ā€˜timelineā€™ of developments created. Having presented, discussed and evaluated the evidence, the work concludes by discussing the possibilities for a chartered form of incorporation for commercial going concerns in the 21st Century and beyond

    Performance of diagnostic tests to detect respiratory viruses in older adults.

    The performance of 4 laboratory methods for diagnosis of viral respiratory tract infections (RTI) in older adults was evaluated. Seventy-four nasopharyngeal (NP) swab specimens were obtained from 60 patients with RTI at a long-term care facility over 2 respiratory seasons. Sixteen specimens were positive for a respiratory virus by at least 1 method. Multiplex reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) by the Luminex xTAG Respiratory Viral Panel (RVP) detected 16 (100%) of the positive specimens, RVP of 24-h culture supernatant detected 8 (50%), direct fluorescent antibody testing detected 4 (25%), rapid culture detected 2 (12.5%), and rapid antigen testing detected none. For a comparison group, RVP was performed on NP swabs from 20 outpatient children with RTI. The mean fluorescence intensity by RVP was significantly lower for positive adult patients than pediatric patients (P = 0.0373). Our data suggest that older adult patients shed lower titers of viruses, necessitating a highly sensitive assay such as RT-PCR to reliably detect respiratory viral pathogens

    Use of a novel Fƶrster resonance energy transfer method to identify locations of site-bound metal ions in the U2ā€“U6 snRNA complex

    U2 and U6 snRNAs pair to form a phylogenetically conserved complex at the catalytic core of the spliceosome. Interactions with divalent metal ions, particularly Mg(II), at specific sites are essential for its folding and catalytic activity. We used a novel Fƶrster resonance energy transfer (FRET) method between site-bound luminescent lanthanide ions and a covalently attached fluorescent dye, combined with supporting stoichiometric and mutational studies, to determine locations of site-bound Tb(III) within the human U2ā€“U6 complex. At pH 7.2, we detected three metal-ion-binding sites in: (1) the consensus ACACAGA sequence, which forms the internal loop between helices I and III; (2) the four-way junction, which contains the conserved AGC triad; and (3) the internal loop of the U6 intra-molecular stem loop (ISL). Binding at each of these sites is supported by previous phosphorothioate substitution studies and, in the case of the ISL site, by NMR. Binding of Tb(III) at the four-way junction and the ISL sites was found to be pH-dependent, with no ion binding observed below pH 6 and 7, respectively. This pH dependence of metal ion binding suggests that the local environment may play a role in the binding of metal ions, which may impact on splicing activity

    Morphology and Magnetic Properties of Sulfonated Poly[styrene-(ethylene/butylene)-styrene]/Iron Oxide Composites

    Ī±-Fe2O3 structures were initiated in the sulfonated polystyrene block domains of poly[styreneā€“(ethylene/butylene)ā€“styrene] (SEBS) block copolymers via a domain-targeted in-situ chemical precipitation method. The crystal structure of these particles was determined using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). TEM revealed that for less sulfonated SEBS (10 mole%), nanoparticles were aggregated with aggregate size range of 100ā€“150 nm whereas for high sulfonation (16 and 20 mole% sSEBS) there were needle-like structures with length and width of 200ā€“250 nm and 50 nm, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analyses suggest that initial iron oxide nanoparticle growth takes place in the sulfonated polystyrene block domains. The magnetic properties of these nanocomposites were probed with a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer at 5 and 150 K as well as with an alternating gradient magnetometer at 300 K. The materials exhibited superparamagnetism at 150 K and 300 K and ferrimagnetism at 5 K

    Determination of jet calibration and energy resolution in proton-proton collisions at \sqrts = 8 TeV using the ATLAS detector

    The jet energy scale, jet energy resolution, and their systematic uncertainties are measured for jets reconstructed with the ATLAS detector in 2012 using protonā€“proton data produced at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 20fbāˆ’1. Jets are reconstructed from clusters of energy depositions in the ATLAS calorimeters using the anti-kt algorithm. A jet calibration scheme is applied in multiple steps, each addressing specific effects including mitigation of contributions from additional protonā€“proton collisions, loss of energy in dead material, calorimeter non-compensation, angular biases and other global jet effects. The final calibration step uses several in situ techniques and corrects for residual effects not captured by the initial calibration. These analyses measure both the jet energy scale and resolution by exploiting the transverse momentum balance in Ī³ + jet, Z + jet, dijet, and multijet events. A statistical combination of these measurements is performed. In the central detector region, the derived calibration has a precision better than 1% for jets with transverse momentum 150GeV<pT< 1500 GeV, and the relative energy resolution is (8.4Ā±0.6)% for pT=100GeV and (23Ā±2)% for pT=20GeV. The calibration scheme for jets with radius parameter R=1.0, for which jets receive a dedicated calibration of the jet mass, is also discussed

    Constraints on selected mediator-based dark matter models and a scalar dark energy model using up to 37 fbāˆ’1āˆšs = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2015-2016 are summarised in this paper. The results of experimental searches in a variety of final states are interpreted in terms of a set of spin-1 and spin-0 single-mediator dark matter simplified models and a second set of models involving an extended Higgs sector plus an additional vector or pseudo-scalar mediator. The searches considered in this paper constrain spin-1 leptophobic and leptophilic mediators, spin-0 colour-neutral and colour-charged mediators and vector or pseudo-scalar mediators embedded in extended Higgs sector models. In this case, also āˆšs = 8 TeV pp collision data are used for the interpretation of the results. The results are also interpreted for the first time in terms of light scalar particles that could contribute to the accelerating expansion of the universe (dark energy)

    Measurement of ā„¤ā„¤ production in the \ell\ellĪ½Ī½ final state with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at \sqrts = 13 TeV

    This paper presents a measurement of ZZ production with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is carried out in the final state with two charged leptons and two neutrinos, using data collected during 2015 and 2016 in pp collisions at sāˆš = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fbāˆ’1. The integrated cross-sections in the total and fiducial phase spaces are measured with an uncertainty of 7% and compared with Standard Model predictions, and differential measurements in the fiducial phase space are reported. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed, and stringent constraints are placed on anomalous couplings corresponding to neutral triple gauge-boson interactions

    Search for heavy particles decaying into a top-quark pair in the fully hadronic final state in pp collisions at āˆšs=13ā€‰ā€‰TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for new particles decaying into a pair of top quarks is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of āˆšs=13ā€‰ā€‰TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1ā€‰ā€‰fbāˆ’1. Events consistent with top-quark pair production and the fully hadronic decay mode of the top quarks are selected by requiring multiple high transverse momentum jets including those containing b-hadrons. Two analysis techniques, exploiting dedicated top-quark pair reconstruction in different kinematic regimes, are used to optimize the search sensitivity to new hypothetical particles over a wide mass range. The invariant mass distribution of the two reconstructed top-quark candidates is examined for resonant production of new particles with various spins and decay widths. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for new hypothetical Zā€² bosons, dark-matter mediators, Kaluza-Klein gravitons and Kaluza-Klein gluons. By comparing with the predicted production cross sections, the Zā€² boson in the topcolor-assisted-technicolor model is excluded for masses up to 3.1ā€“3.6 TeV, the dark-matter mediators in a simplified framework are excluded in the mass ranges from 0.8 to 0.9 TeV and from 2.0 to 2.2 TeV, and the Kaluza-Klein gluon is excluded for masses up to 3.4 TeV, depending on the decay widths of the particles
