    Water use has almost tripled over the past 50 years and in some regions the water demand already exceeds supply (Vorosmarty et al., 2000). The world is facing a “global water crisis”; in many countries, current levels of water use are unsustainable, with systems vulnerable to collapse from even small changes in water availability. The need for a scientifically-based assessment of the potential impacts on water resources of future changes, as a basis for society to adapt to such changes, is strong for most parts of the world. Although the focus of such assessments has tended to be climate change, socio-economic changes can have as significant an impact on water availability across the four main use sectors i.e. domestic, agricultural, industrial (including energy) and environmental. Withdrawal and consumption of water is expected to continue to grow substantially over the next 20-50 years (Cosgrove & Rijsberman, 2002), and consequent changes in availability may drastically affect society and economies. One of the most needed improvements in Latin American river basin management is a higher level of detail in hydrological modelling and erosion risk assessment, as a basis for identification and analysis of mitigation actions, as well as for analysis of global change scenarios. Flow measurements are too costly to be realised at more than a few locations, which means that modelled data are required for the rest of the basin. Hence, TWINLATIN Work Package 3 “Hydrological modelling and extremes” was formulated to provide methods and tools to be used by other WPs, in particular WP6 on “Pollution pressure and impact analysis” and WP8 on “Change effects and vulnerability assessment”. With an emphasis on high and low flows and their impacts, WP3 was originally called “Hydrological modelling, flooding, erosion, water scarcity and water abstraction”. However, at the TWINLATIN kick-off meeting it was agreed that some of these issues resided more appropriately in WP6 and WP8, and so WP3 was renamed to focus on hydrological modelling and hydrological extremes.     We explore kaon condensation using the bound-state approach to the Skyrme model on a 3-sphere. The condensation occurs when the energy required to produce a KK^- falls below the electron fermi level.     We give a physical description in terms of percolation theory of the phase transition that occurs when the disorder increases in the random antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain between a gapless phase with topological order and a random singlet phase. We study the statistical properties of the percolation clusters by numerical simulations, and we compute exact exponents characterizing the transition by a real-space renormalization group calculation.Comment: 9 pages, 4 encapsulated Postscript figures, REVTeX 3.

    Hypernuclei as chiral solitons

    The identification of flavored multiskyrmions with the ground states of known hypernuclei is successful for several of them, e.g. for isodoublet H(Lambda) - He(Lambda), A=4, isoscalars He(Lambda) (A=5) and Li(Lambda) (A=7). In other cases agreement is not so good, but the behaviour of the binding energy with increasing baryon number is in qualitative agreement with data. Charmed or beauty hypernuclei within this approach are predicted to be bound stronger than strange hypernuclei.     We study the massive SU(3) Skyrmion model to investigate the flavor symmetry breaking (FSB) effects on the static properties of the strange baryons in the framework of the rigid rotator quantization scheme combined with the improved Dirac quantization one. Both the chiral symmetry breaking pion mass and FSB kinetic terms are shown to improve cc the ratio of the strange-light to light-light interaction strengths and cˉ\bar{c} that of the strange-strange to light-light.Comment: 12 pages, latex, no figure

    Effect of disorder on quantum phase transitions in anisotropic XY spin chains in a transverse field

    We present some exact results for the effect of disorder on the critical properties of an anisotropic XY spin chain in a transverse field. The continuum limit of the corresponding fermion model is taken and in various cases results in a Dirac equation with a random mass. Exact analytic techniques can then be used to evaluate the density of states and the localization length. In the presence of disorder the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic or Ising transition of the model is in the same universality class as the random transverse field Ising model solved by Fisher using a real space renormalization group decimation technique (RSRGDT). If there is only randomness in the anisotropy of the magnetic exchange then the anisotropy transition (from a ferromagnet in the xx direction to a ferromagnet in the yy direction) is also in this universality class. However, if there is randomness in the isotropic part of the exchange or in the transverse field then in a non-zero transverse field the anisotropy transition is destroyed by the disorder. We show that in the Griffiths' phase near the Ising transition that the ground state energy has an essential singularity. The results obtained for the dynamical critical exponent, the typical correlation length, and the temperature dependence of the specific heat near the Ising transition agree with the results of the RSRGDT and numerical work.Comment: 22 pages, RevTeX + epsf, 4 figure

    Random Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Chains with Competing Interactions

    We study disordered antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains with nearest- and further-neighbor interactions using the real-space renormalization-group method. We find that the system supports two different phases, depending on the ratio of the strength between nearest-neighbor and further-neighbor interactions as well the bond randomness strength. For weak further neighbor coupling the system is in the familiar random singlet phase, while stronger further neighbor coupling drives the system to a large spin phase similar to that found in the study of random antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin chains. The appearance of the large spin phase in the absence of ferromagnetic coupling is due to the frustration introduced by further neighboring couplings, and is unique to the disordered chains.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    If municipalities were the caring platforms of the 19-20th century sharing economy, how does care manifest in civic structures of the current period? We consider how platforms - from the local initiatives of communities transforming neighbourhoods, to the city, in the form of the local authority - are involved, trusted and/or relied on in the design of shared services and amenities for the public good. We use contrasting cases of interaction between local government and civil society organisations in Sweden and the UK to explore trends in public service provision. We look at how care can manifest between state and citizens and at the roles that co-design and co-learning play in developing contextually sensitive opportunities for caring platforms. In this way, we seek to learn from platforms in transition about the importance of co-learning in political and structural contexts and make recommendations for the co-design of (digital) platforms to care with and for civil society

    A Simple Description of Strange Dibaryons in the Skyrme Model

    We study strange dibaryons based on the SU(2)-embedded B=2 toroidal soliton. Treating the excursions of the soliton into strange directions as small rigid oscillations, we obtain a good approximation to the bound state approach. We calculate the dibaryon mass formula to order 1/N and find that the doubly strange I=J=0 dibaryon is bound by about 90 MeV.Comment: LaTeX format, 9 pages. No figure
