Effect of Nyquist Noise on the Nyquist Dephasing Rate in 2d Electron Systems
We measure the effect of externally applied broadband Nyquist noise on the
intrinsic Nyquist dephasing rate of electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas
at low temperatures. Within the measurement error, the phase coherence time is
unaffected by the externally applied Nyquist noise, including applied noise
temperatures of up to 300 K. The amplitude of the applied Nyquist noise from
100 MHz to 10 GHz is quantitatively determined in the same experiment using a

A glassy contribution to the heat capacity of hcp He solids
We model the low-temperature specific heat of solid He in the hexagonal
closed packed structure by invoking two-level tunneling states in addition to
the usual phonon contribution of a Debye crystal for temperatures far below the
Debye temperature, . By introducing a cutoff energy in the
two-level tunneling density of states, we can describe the excess specific heat
observed in solid hcp He, as well as the low-temperature linear term in the
specific heat. Agreement is found with recent measurements of the temperature
behavior of both specific heat and pressure. These results suggest the presence
of a very small fraction, at the parts-per-million (ppm) level, of two-level
tunneling systems in solid He, irrespective of the existence of

Implication of the overlap representation for modelling generalized parton distributions
Based on a field theoretically inspired model of light-cone wave functions,
we derive valence-like generalized parton distributions and their double
distributions from the wave function overlap in the parton number conserved
s-channel. The parton number changing contributions in the t-channel are
restored from duality. In our construction constraints of positivity and
polynomiality are simultaneously satisfied and it also implies a model
dependent relation between generalized parton distributions and transverse
momentum dependent parton distribution functions. The model predicts that the
t-behavior of resulting hadronic amplitudes depends on the Bjorken variable
x_Bj. We also propose an improved ansatz for double distributions that embeds

Gerbes, M5-Brane Anomalies and E_8 Gauge Theory
Abelian gerbes and twisted bundles describe the topology of the NS-NS 3-form
gauge field strength H. We review how they have been usefully applied to study
and resolve global anomalies in open string theory. Abelian 2-gerbes and
twisted nonabelian gerbes describe the topology of the 4-form field strength G
of M-theory. We show that twisted nonabelian gerbes are relevant in the study
and resolution of global anomalies of multiple coinciding M5-branes. Global
anomalies for one M5-brane have been studied by Witten and by Diaconescu, Freed
and Moore. The structure and the differential geometry of twisted nonabelian
gerbes (i.e. modules for 2-gerbes) is defined and studied. The nonabelian
2-form gauge potential living on multiple coinciding M5-branes arises as
curving (curvature) of twisted nonabelian gerbes. The nonabelian group is in
general , the central extension of the E_8 loop group. The
twist is in general necessary to cancel global anomalies due to the
nontriviality of the 11-dimensional 4-form G field strength and due to the
possible torsion present in the cycles the M5-branes wrap. Our description of
M5-branes global anomalies leads to the D4-branes one upon compactification of
M-theory to Type IIA theory.Comment: 19 page
A purely algebraic construction of a gauge and renormalization group invariant scalar glueball operator
This paper presents a complete algebraic proof of the renormalizability of
the gauge invariant operator to all orders of
perturbation theory in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory, whereby working in the
Landau gauge. This renormalization is far from being trivial as mixing occurs
with other gauge variant operators, which we identify explicitly. We
determine the mixing matrix to all orders in perturbation theory by using
only algebraic arguments and consequently we can uncover a renormalization
group invariant by using the anomalous dimension matrix derived from
. We also present a future plan for calculating the mass of the lightest
scalar glueball with the help of the framework we have set up.Comment: 17 page
The composition of Singaporean shopping centres
With its growing population but limited supply of land, Singapore has seen a huge increase in the number and size of shopping centres in recent years. This growth has led to two rather contradictory outcomes - more choice for retailers in their efforts to reach customers but also claims that too many of the centres contain the same types of retailers and contain no real differentiation in their offerings. This paper looks at this trend and reports on a survey of the composition of store types in a wide range of Singaporean shopping centres to consider whether or not these views are based on a full picture of the roles played by these shopping centres
B_c meson rare decays in the light-cone quark model
We investigate the rare decays
and in the framework of the
light-cone quark model (LCQM). The transition form factors are calculated in
the space-like region and then analytically continued to the time-like region
via exponential parametrization. The branching ratios and longitudinal lepton
polarization asymmetries (LPAs) for the two decays are given and compared with
each other. The results are helpful to investigating the structure of
meson and to testing the unitarity of CKM quark mixing matrix. All these

Search for the Proton Decay Mode proton to neutrino K+ in Soudan 2
We have searched for the proton decay mode proton to neutrino K+ using the
one-kiloton Soudan 2 high resolution calorimeter. Contained events obtained
from a 3.56 kiloton-year fiducial exposure through June 1997 are examined for
occurrence of a visible K+ track which decays at rest into mu+ nu or pi+ pi0.
We found one candidate event consistent with background, yielding a limit,

A two-component pre-seeded dermal-epidermal scaffold
We have developed a bilayered dermal-epidermal scaffold for application in the treatment of full-thickness skin defects. The dermal component gels in situ and adapts to the lesion shape, delivering human dermal fibroblasts in a matrix of fibrin and cross-linked hyaluronic acid modified with a cell adhesion-promoting peptide. Fibroblasts were able to form a tridimensional matrix due to material features such as tailored mechanical properties, presence of protease-degradable elements and cell-binding ligands. The epidermal component is a robust membrane containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid and poly-l-lysine, on which keratinocytes were able to attach and to form a monolayer. Amine-aldehyde bonding at the interface between the two components allows the formation of a tightly bound composite scaffold. Analytical Results for Individual and Group Selection of Any Intensity
The idea of evolutionary game theory is to relate the payoff of a game to reproductive success (= fitness). An underlying assumption in most models is that fitness is a linear function of the payoff. For stochastic evolutionary dynamics in finite populations, this leads to analytical results in the limit of weak selection, where the game has a small effect on overall fitness. But this linear function makes the analysis of strong selection difficult. Here, we show that analytical results can be obtained for any intensity of selection, if fitness is defined as an exponential function of payoff. This approach also works for group selection (= multi-level selection). We discuss the difference between our approach and that of inclusive fitness theory
