LiDAR2Map: In Defense of LiDAR-Based Semantic Map Construction Using Online Camera Distillation

Semantic map construction under bird's-eye view (BEV) plays an essential role in autonomous driving. In contrast to camera image, LiDAR provides the accurate 3D observations to project the captured 3D features onto BEV space inherently. However, the vanilla LiDAR-based BEV feature often contains many indefinite noises, where the spatial features have little texture and semantic cues. In this paper, we propose an effective LiDAR-based method to build semantic map. Specifically, we introduce a BEV feature pyramid decoder that learns the robust multi-scale BEV features for semantic map construction, which greatly boosts the accuracy of the LiDAR-based method. To mitigate the defects caused by lacking semantic cues in LiDAR data, we present an online Camera-to-LiDAR distillation scheme to facilitate the semantic learning from image to point cloud. Our distillation scheme consists of feature-level and logit-level distillation to absorb the semantic information from camera in BEV. The experimental results on challenging nuScenes dataset demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed LiDAR2Map on semantic map construction, which significantly outperforms the previous LiDAR-based methods over 27.9% mIoU and even performs better than the state-of-the-art camera-based approaches. Radix angelicae pubescentis (RAP) has been used in Chinese traditional medicine to treat painful diseases such as rheumatism and headache. A previous study has reported that columbianadin (CBN), a major coumarin in RAP inhibits acute and inflammatory pain behaviors. However, the effects of CBN on neuropathic pain behaviors, and the potential underlying mechanism have not been reported. In the present study, the effects of CBN, compared to another major coumarin of RAP osthole (OST), on oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic pain behaviors and on the voltage-gated calcium currents in small dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons were studied in mice. It was found that CBN and OST inhibited both mechanical and cold hypersensitivity induced by oxaliplatin. Moreover, CBN and OST might preferentially inhibit T- and L-type calcium currents (Ica). The inhibitory effects of CBN and OST on the oxaliplatin-induced mechanical allodynia were prevented by gabapentin. These results suggest that CBN, as well as OST might inhibit neuropathic pain behaviors through an inhibition of T- and L-type calcium currents in nociceptive DRG neurons

Targeted p53 on Small-Molecules-Induced Ferroptosis in Cancers

Ferroptosis is a type of programmed cell death characterized by the accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species (L-ROS) driven by the oxidative degeneration of lipids in an iron-dependent manner. The mechanism by which lipid oxidative degradation drives ROS-ferroptosis involves metabolic dysfunctions that result in impaired intracellular metabolic processes and ROS production. Recent studies have found that p53 acts as a positive regulator of ferroptosis by promoting ROS production. p53 directly regulates the metabolic versatility of cells by favoring mitochondrial respiration, leading to ROS-mediated ferroptosis. In mild stress, p53 protects cell survival via eliminating ROS; additionally, in human colorectal cancer, p53 antagonizes ferroptosis by formation of the DPP4–p53 complex. In short, the mechanisms of p53-mediated ROS production underlying cellular response are poorly understood. In the context of recent research results, the indistinct roles of p53 on ROS-mediated ferroptosis are scrutinized to understand the mechanism underlying p53-mediated tumor suppression

Aim: To investigate the count of circulating tissue factor-positive (TF+) procoagulant microparticles (MPs) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Methods: This case-control study included patients with T1DM and age and sex-matched healthy volunteers. The counts of phosphatidylserine-positive (PS+) MPs and TF(+)PS(+)MPs and the subgroups derived from different cell types were measured in the peripheral blood sample of the two groups using multicolor flow cytometric assay. We compared the counts of each MP between groups as well as the ratio of the TF(+)PS(+)MPs and PS(+)MPs (TF(+)PS(+)MPs/PS(+)MPs). Results: We recruited 36 patients with T1DM and 36 matched healthy controls. Compared with healthy volunteers, PS(+)MPs, TF(+)PS(+)MPs and TF(+)PS(+)MPs/PS(+)MPs were elevated in patients with T1DM (PS(+)MPs: 1078.5 +/- 158.08 vs 686.84 +/- 122.04/mu L, P <0.001; TF(+)PS(+)MPs: 202.10 +/- 47.47 vs 108.33 +/- 29.42/mu L, P <0.001; and TF(+)PS(+)MPs/PS(+)MPs: 0.16 +/- 0.04 vs 0.19 +/- 0.05, P = 0.004), mostly derived from platelet, lymphocytes and endothelial cells. In the subgroup analysis, the counts of total and platelet TF(+)PS(+)MPs were increased in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and with higher HbA1c, respectively. Conclusion: Circulating TF(+)PS(+)MPs and those derived from platelet, lymphocytes and endothelial cells were elevated in patients with T1DM.De tre första författarna delar förstaförfattarskapet.</p

Open-source genomic analysis of Shiga-toxin–producing E. coli O104:H4

An outbreak caused by Shiga-toxin–producing Escherichia coli O104:H4 occurred in Germany in May and June of 2011, with more than 3000 persons infected. Here, we report a cluster of cases associated with a single family and describe an open-source genomic analysis of an isolate from one member of the family. This analysis involved the use of rapid, bench-top DNA sequencing technology, open-source data release, and prompt crowd-sourced analyses. In less than a week, these studies revealed that the outbreak strain belonged to an enteroaggregative E. coli lineage that had acquired genes for Shiga toxin 2 and for antibiotic resistance

Glycated Haemoglobin A1c Variability Score Elicits Kidney Function Decline in Chinese People Living with Type 2 Diabetes

Our aim was to investigate the association of glycated haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) variability score (HVS) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slope in Chinese adults living with type 2 diabetes. This cohort study included adults with type 2 diabetes attending outpatient clinics between 2011 and 2019 from a large electronic medical record-based database of diabetes in China (WECODe). We estimated the individual-level visit-to-visit HbA1c variability using HVS, a proportion of changes in HbA1c of ≥0.5% (5.5 mmol/mol). We estimated the odds of people experiencing a rapid eGFR annual decline using a logistic regression and differences across HVS categories in the mean eGFR slope using a mixed-effect model. The analysis involved 2397 individuals and a median follow-up of 4.7 years. Compared with people with HVS ≤ 20%, those with HVS of 60% to 80% had 11% higher odds of experiencing rapid eGFR annual decline, with an extra eGFR decline of 0.93 mL/min/1.73 m(2) per year on average; those with HVS > 80% showed 26% higher odds of experiencing a rapid eGFR annual decline, with an extra decline of 1.83 mL/min/1.73 m(2) per year on average. Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes and HVS > 60% could experience a more rapid eGFR decline

For this graduation project, the Dutch Wadden Sea Region is chosen as analysis context. It contains both the Wadden Sea and mainland near the Wadden Sea. For the coastal part, there are tidal mud flats, shoals, barrier islands and fertile marshlands. Besides, the coastal area is occupied by several villages and towns. By all of these elements, this region is known as a natural resource area and a tourism destination for the population of the urbanized areas in the interior (Otto, 2001). The Wadden Sea Region also has rich cultural heritage, which gives evidence of interaction between human and nature. This resulted in a great diversity of geographical landscapes and a wealth of natural values (Otto, 2001). Besides, the region is important not only for nearby country, but also for few areas with comparable physical conditions, which means adaptive strategies developed here can be used as patterns and models for other development all over Europe and even the world.Right now, this region is facing a set of environmental, social-economic and demographical problems, like: sea level rise, coastal erosion, hydrological changes, weak economic potential (less competitive and less high skilled), unemployment, population decline and survival of typical landscape elements as well as some other legacy (Wim, 2013, Britas et al., 2010, Heike et al., 2005, Otto,2001).In conclusion, tidal movements, extreme weather conditions and processes of erosion, sedimentation make the Wadden Sea Region very dynamic. Besides, the cultural heritage is rich and diverse. No matter nature or culture in the Wadden Sea Region, they are both characterized by continuous interaction of traditional and current needs. This region will be constantly challenged by urban innovations, economic conjunctions and political realities (Otto, 2001).Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Mobile phones are now popular in current society for its portability and intelligence, but excluded from life of the hearing-impaired because sounds are unavailable for them. This paper provides a framework of speech based Chinese Sign Language (CSL) Animation System on Smart Phones, which combines speech recognition and sign language animation to make phones convenient for the hearing-impaired. This paper recognizes the Chinese speech into text first, and then proposes a HMMSVM model to judge interrogative expression from the speech and rewrites the plain text as mark-up text according to the rules of Chinese Sign Language Mark-up Language (CSLML) which provides signs for recording expressive context in the text, the corresponding animation is finally synthesized using key-frame technology. The prototype system based on the framework provided in this paper gives plausible Sign Language animation
