    Offsprings of a point vortex

The distribution engendered by successive splitting of one point vortex are considered. The process of splitting a vortex in three using a reverse three-point vortex collapse course is analysed in great details and shown to be dissipative. A simple process of successive splitting is then defined and the resulting vorticity distribution and vortex populations are analysed

Two-Photon Doppler cooling of alkaline-earth-metal and ytterbium atoms

A new possibility of laser cooling of alkaline-earth-metal and Ytterbium atoms using a two-photon transition is analyzed. We consider a 1S0^{1}S_{0} - 1S0^{1}S_{0} transition, with excitation in near resonance with the 1P1^{1}P_{1} level. This greatly increases the two-photon transition rate, allowing an effective transfer of momentum. The experimental implementation of this technique is discussed and we show that for Calcium, for example, two-photon cooling can be used to achieve a Doppler limit of 123 microKelvin. The efficiency of this cooling scheme and the main loss mechanisms are analyzed.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

What do young athletes implicitly understand about psychological skills?

    Get PDF
One reason sport psychologists teach psychological skills is to enhance performance in sport; but the value of psychological skills for young athletes is questionable because of the qualitative and quantitative differences between children and adults in their understanding of abstract concepts such as mental skills. To teach these skills effectively to young athletes, sport psychologists need to appreciate what young athletes implicitly understand about such skills because maturational (e.g., cognitive, social) and environmental (e.g., coaches) factors can influence the progressive development of children and youth. In the present qualitative study, we explored young athletes’ (aged 10–15 years) understanding of four basic psychological skills: goal setting, mental imagery, self-talk, and relaxation. Young athletes (n = 118: 75 males and 43 females) completed an open-ended questionnaire to report their understanding of these four basic psychological skills. Compared with the older youth athletes, the younger youth athletes were less able to explain the meaning of each psychological skill. Goal setting and mental imagery were better understood than self-talk and relaxation. Based on these findings, sport psychologists should consider adapting interventions and psychoeducational programs to match young athletes’ age and developmental level

Magnetotransport in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems with Spin-Orbit Interaction

We present magnetotransport calculations for homogeneous two-dimensional electron systems including the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, which mixes the spin-eigenstates and leads to a modified fan-chart with crossing Landau levels. The quantum mechanical Kubo formula is evaluated by taking into account spin-conserving scatterers in an extension of the self-consistent Born approximation that considers the spin degree of freedom. The calculated conductivity exhibits besides the well-known beating in the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations a modulation which is due to a suppression of scattering away from the crossing points of Landau levels and does not show up in the density of states. This modulation, surviving even at elevated temperatures when the SdH oscillations are damped out, could serve to identify spin-orbit coupling in magnetotransport experiments. Our magnetotransport calculations are extended also to lateral superlattices and predictions are made with respect to 1/B periodic oscillations in dependence on carrier density and strength of the spin-orbit coupling.Comment: 8 pages including 8 figures; submitted to PR

Political Corporate Social Responsibility: Reviewing Theories and Setting New Agendas

    Get PDF
There has been rising interest in political corporate social responsibility (political CSR), defined as activities where CSR has an intended or unintended political impact, or where intended or unintended political impacts on CSR exist. Based on a survey and content analysis of 146 peer-reviewed academic articles from 18 journals over the 14-year period 2000–2013, this paper systematically reviews the existing applications of general theories (such as legitimacy theory, the resource-based view and Habermasian political theory) within the political CSR literature. The survey indicates that the political CSR field is dominated by institutional theory and stakeholder theory, but future theory development needs to go beyond these theories in order to address a number of critical gaps. This review specifically points to several avenues for future political CSR research with regard to the individual level of analysis, domain integration and political CSR in multinational enterprises. The paper ends with a call for a new theory-informed and pluralist research agenda on political CSR to integrate different perspectives and re-examine the role of the state

Kinetic theory of point vortices: diffusion coefficient and systematic drift

We develop a kinetic theory for point vortices in two-dimensional hydrodynamics. Using standard projection operator technics, we derive a Fokker-Planck equation describing the relaxation of a ``test'' vortex in a bath of ``field'' vortices at statistical equilibrium. The relaxation is due to the combined effect of a diffusion and a drift. The drift is shown to be responsible for the organization of point vortices at negative temperatures. A description that goes beyond the thermal bath approximation is attempted. A new kinetic equation is obtained which respects all conservation laws of the point vortex system and satisfies a H-theorem. Close to equilibrium this equation reduces to the ordinary Fokker-Planck equation.Comment: 50 pages. To appear in Phys. Rev.

Calculation of the interspecies s-wave scattering length in an ultracold Na-Rb vapor

    Get PDF
We report the calculation of the interspecies scattering length for the sodium-rubidium (Na-Rb) system. We present improved hybrid potentials for the singlet X1ÎŁ+X^1\Sigma^+ and triplet a3ÎŁ+a^3\Sigma^+ ground states of the NaRb molecule, and calculate the singlet and triplet scattering lengths asa_{s} and ata_{t} for the isotopomers 23^{23}Na87^{87}Rb and 23^{23}Na85^{85}Rb. Using these values, we assess the prospects for producing a stable two-species Bose-Einstein condensate in the Na-Rb system.Comment: v2: report correct units in Table captions, fix error in conclusions for 23^{23}Na85^{85}Rb TBEC. Otherwise, more concise presentation, typos fixed. 6 pages, 1 figur

Non-linear regression models for Approximate Bayesian Computation

Approximate Bayesian inference on the basis of summary statistics is well-suited to complex problems for which the likelihood is either mathematically or computationally intractable. However the methods that use rejection suffer from the curse of dimensionality when the number of summary statistics is increased. Here we propose a machine-learning approach to the estimation of the posterior density by introducing two innovations. The new method fits a nonlinear conditional heteroscedastic regression of the parameter on the summary statistics, and then adaptively improves estimation using importance sampling. The new algorithm is compared to the state-of-the-art approximate Bayesian methods, and achieves considerable reduction of the computational burden in two examples of inference in statistical genetics and in a queueing model.Comment: 4 figures; version 3 minor changes; to appear in Statistics and Computin

Isovector unpolarized quark distribution in the nucleon in the large-N_c limit

    Get PDF
We calculate the isovector (flavor-nonsinglet) unpolarized quark- and antiquark distributions in the nucleon at a low normalization point in the large-N_c limit. The nucleon is described as a soliton of the effective chiral theory. The isovector distribution appears in the next-to-leading order of the 1/N_c-expansion. Numerical results for the quark- and antiquark distributions compare well with the parametrizations of the data at a low normalization point. This large-N_c approach gives a flavor asymmetry of the antiquark distribution (violation of the Gottfried sum rule) in good agreement with the measurements.Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX, 1 table, 4 figures included using eps
