    How can revivals of scientific publications be explained using bibliometric methods ?

    Le profil de citation inhabituel du prix Nobel de physique de 1985 a été analysé. Le nombre d’articles cités par année ne dépasse pas 123 citations au milieu des années 1980 et passe à plus de 200 citations environ deux décennies plus tard. L’ensemble des articles cités ont été analysés en termes de co-auteurs et de sujets de recherche. La République populaire de Chine figure en bonne place parmi les pays des auteurs cités. Une analyse par mots-clés des articles cités a révélé les isolateurs topologiques comme l’un des principaux sujets de recherche en pleine évolution. Une étude des articles co-créés a été réalisée par spectroscopie d’année de publication de référence. Les articles les plus fréquemment co-créés ont été identifiés et discutés. Par conséquent, nous avons trouvé des articles secondaires qui ont renouvelé l’intérêt pour le prix Nobel de physique de 1985

    Objective Response to Radiation Therapy and Long-Term Survival of Patients with WHO Grade II Astrocytic Gliomas with Known LOH 1p/19q Status

    Background:: WHO grade II gliomas are often approached by radiation therapy (RT). However, little is known about tumor response and its potential impact on long-term survival. Patients and Methods:: Patients subjected to RT were selected from the own database of WHO grade II gliomas diagnosed between 1991 and 2000. The volumetric tumor response after RT was assessed based on magnetic resonance imaging and graded according to standard criteria as complete, partial (PR, ≥ 50%), or minor (MR, 25% to < 50%). Results:: There were 24 astrocytomas and three oligoastrocytomas. 21 patients (78%) were dead at follow-up (mean survival 74 months). None of the patients had chemotherapy. Objective response occurred in 14 patients (52%, five PR and nine MR) but was not associated with overall survival. The vast majority of the tumors had no loss of heterozygosity (LOH) 1p and/or 19q (86%). Conclusion:: Approximately 50% of patients with astrocytic WHO grade II gliomas respond to RT despite the absence of LOH for 1p/19q.     Lateral one-third gland resection in Cushing patients with failed adenoma identification leads to low remission rates: long-term observations from a small, single-center cohort.

    BACKGROUND Currently, there are no guidelines for neurosurgeons treating patients with Cushing's disease (CD) when intraoperative adenoma identification is negative. Under these circumstances, a total hypophysectomy or hemi-hypophysectomy on the side indicated by inferior petrosal sinus sampling (IPSS) is the approach being used, although there is a subsequent risk of hypopituitarism. Data on whether one-third lateral pituitary gland resection results in cure of hypercortisolism and low rates of hypopituitarism remain inconclusive. METHODS Retrospective single-center study of CD patients with failed intraoperative adenoma identification and subsequent resection of the lateral one-third of the pituitary gland as predicted by IPSS. We assessed (i) histopathological findings, (ii) early and long-term remission rates, and (iii) rates of additional pituitary hormone insufficiency. RESULTS Ten women and three men met the inclusion criteria. At 3 months, remission was noted in six (46%) patients: three (23%) had histologically confirmed adenomas, two (15%) had ACTH hyperplasia, and one patient (8%) was positive for Crooke's hyaline degeneration. New pituitary hormone deficits were noted in two patients (15%). After a median (±SD) follow-up of 14±4 years, recurrence was noted in two (15%) patients. Long-term control of hypercortisolism was attained by 10 patients (77%), with additional therapies required in nine (69%) of them. CONCLUSIONS In CD patients with failed intraoperative adenoma visualization, lateral one-third gland resection resulted in low morbidity and long-term remission in 31% of patients without the need for additional therapies. Bearing in mind the sample size of this audit, the indication for lateral one-third-gland resection has to be critically appraised and discussed with the patients before surgery

    Global Strong Solutions for a Class of Heterogeneous Catalysis Models

    We consider a mathematical model for heterogeneous catalysis in a finite three-dimensional pore of cylinder-like geometry, with the lateral walls acting as a catalytic surface. The system under consideration consists of a diffusion-advection system inside the bulk phase and a reaction-diffusion-sorption system modeling the processes on the catalytic wall and the exchange between bulk and surface. We assume Fickian diffusion with constant coefficients, sorption kinetics with linear growth bound and a network of chemical reactions which possesses a certain triangular structure. Our main result gives sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique global strong L2L^2-solution to this model, thereby extending by now classical results on reaction-diffusion systems to the more complicated case of heterogeneous catalysis.Comment: 30 page

    Correlation between lasing and transport properties in a quantum dot-resonator system

    We study a double quantum dot system coherently coupled to an electromagnetic resonator. By suitably biasing the system, a population inversion can be created between the dot levels. The resulting lasing state exists within a narrow resonance window, where the transport current correlates with the lasing state. It allows probing the lasing state via a current measurement.
