The measurement of driver describing functions in simulated steering control tasks
Measurements of driver describing functions in steering control tasks have been made using a driving simulator. The task was to regulate against a random crosswind gust input on a straight roadway, in order to stay in the center of the lane. Although driving is a multiloop task in general, the forcing function and situation were configured so that an inner-loop visual cue feedback of heading angle of heading rate would dominate, and the driver's response was interpreted to be primarily single-loop. The driver describing functions were measured using an STI describing function analyzer. Three replications for each subject showed good repeatability within a subject. There were some intersubject differences as expected, but the crossover frequencies, effective time delays, and stability margins were generally consistent with the prior data and models for similar manual control tasks. The results further confirm the feasibility of measuring human operator response properties in nominal control tasks with full (real-world) visual field displays
Fractal Characterizations of MAX Statistical Distribution in Genetic Association Studies
Two non-integer parameters are defined for MAX statistics, which are maxima
of simpler test statistics. The first parameter, , is the
fractional number of tests, representing the equivalent numbers of independent
tests in MAX. If the tests are dependent, . The second
parameter is the fractional degrees of freedom of the chi-square
distribution that fits the MAX null distribution. These two
parameters, and , can be independently defined, and can be
non-integer even if is an integer. We illustrate these two parameters
using the example of MAX2 and MAX3 statistics in genetic case-control studies.
We speculate that is related to the amount of ambiguity of the model
inferred by the test. In the case-control genetic association, tests with low
(e.g. ) are able to provide definitive information about the disease
model, as versus tests with high (e.g. ) that are completely uncertain
about the disease model. Similar to Heisenberg's uncertain principle, the
ability to infer disease model and the ability to detect significant
association may not be simultaneously optimized, and seems to measure the
level of their balance
Genomic islands of divergence in the Yellow Tang and the Brushtail Tang Surgeonfishes.
The current ease of obtaining thousands of molecular markers challenges the notion that full phylogenetic concordance, as proposed by phylogenetic species concepts, is a requirement for defining species delimitations. Indeed, the presence of genomic islands of divergence, which may be the cause, or in some cases the consequence, of speciation, precludes concordance. Here, we explore this issue using thousands of RAD markers on two sister species of surgeonfishes (Teleostei: Acanthuridae), Zebrasoma flavescens and Z. scopas, and several populations within each species. Species are readily distinguished based on their colors (solid yellow and solid brown, respectively), yet populations and species are neither distinguishable using mitochondrial markers (cytochrome c oxidase 1), nor using 5193 SNPs (pairwise Φst = 0.034). In contrast, when using outlier loci, some of them presumably under selection, species delimitations, and strong population structure follow recognized taxonomic positions (pairwise Φst = 0.326). Species and population delimitation differences based on neutral and selected markers are likely due to local adaptation, thus being consistent with the idea that these genomic islands of divergence arose as a consequence of isolation. These findings, which are not unique, raise the question of a potentially important pathway of divergence based on local adaptation that is only evident when looking at thousands of loci
Pressure-induced superconductivity in the giant Rashba system BiTeI
At ambient pressure, BiTeI is the first material found to exhibit a giant
Rashba splitting of the bulk electronic bands. At low pressures, BiTeI
undergoes a transition from trivial insulator to topological insulator. At
still higher pressures, two structural transitions are known to occur. We have
carried out a series of electrical resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility
measurements on BiTeI at pressure up to ~40 GPa in an effort to characterize
the properties of the high-pressure phases. A previous calculation found that
the high-pressure orthorhombic P4/nmm structure BiTeI is a metal. We find that
this structure is superconducting with Tc values as high as 6 K. AC magnetic
susceptibility measurements support the bulk nature of the superconductivity.
Using electronic structure and phonon calculations, we compute Tc and find that
our data is consistent with phonon-mediated superconductivity.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Persistence of the immune response induced by BCG vaccination.
BACKGROUND: Although BCG vaccination is recommended in most countries of the world, little is known of the persistence of BCG-induced immune responses. As novel TB vaccines may be given to boost the immunity induced by neonatal BCG vaccination, evidence concerning the persistence of the BCG vaccine-induced response would help inform decisions about when such boosting would be most effective. METHODS: A randomised control study of UK adolescents was carried out to investigate persistence of BCG immune responses. Adolescents were tested for interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis purified protein derivative (M.tb PPD) in a whole blood assay before, 3 months, 12 months (n = 148) and 3 years (n = 19) after receiving teenage BCG vaccination or 14 years after receiving infant BCG vaccination (n = 16). RESULTS: A gradual reduction in magnitude of response was evident from 3 months to 1 year and from 1 year to 3 years following teenage vaccination, but responses 3 years after vaccination were still on average 6 times higher than before vaccination among vaccinees. Some individuals (11/86; 13%) failed to make a detectable antigen-specific response three months after vaccination, or lost the response after 1 (11/86; 13%) or 3 (3/19; 16%) years. IFN-gamma response to Ag85 was measured in a subgroup of adolescents and appeared to be better maintained with no decline from 3 to 12 months. A smaller group of adolescents were tested 14 years after receiving infant BCG vaccination and 13/16 (81%) made a detectable IFN-gamma response to M.tb PPD 14 years after infant vaccination as compared to 6/16 (38%) matched unvaccinated controls (p = 0.012); teenagers vaccinated in infancy were 19 times more likely to make an IFN-gamma response of > 500 pg/ml than unvaccinated teenagers. CONCLUSION: BCG vaccination in infancy and adolescence induces immunological memory to mycobacterial antigens that is still present and measurable for at least 14 years in the majority of vaccinees, although the magnitude of the peripheral blood response wanes from 3 months to 12 months and from 12 months to 3 years post vaccination. The data presented here suggest that because of such waning in the response there may be scope for boosting anti-tuberculous immunity in BCG vaccinated children anytime from 3 months post-vaccination. This supports the prime boost strategies being employed for some new TB vaccines currently under development
The trans-activation domain of the sporulation response regulator Spo0A revealed by X-ray crystallography
Sporulation in Bacillus involves the induction of scores of genes in a temporally and spatially co-ordinated programme of cell development. Its initiation is under the control of an expanded two-component signal transduction system termed a phosphorelay. The master control element in the decision to sporulate is the response regulator, Spo0A, which comprises a receiver or phosphoacceptor domain and an effector or transcription activation domain. The receiver domain of Spo0A shares sequence similarity with numerous response regulators, and its structure has been determined in phosphorylated and unphosphorylated forms. However, the effector domain (C-Spo0A) has no detectable sequence similarity to any other protein, and this lack of structural information is an obstacle to understanding how DNA binding and transcription activation are controlled by phosphorylation in Spo0A. Here, we report the crystal structure of C-Spo0A from Bacillus stearothermophilus revealing a single alpha -helical domain comprising six alpha -helices in an unprecedented fold. The structure contains a helix-turn-helix as part of a three alpha -helical bundle reminiscent of the catabolite gene activator protein (CAP), suggesting a mechanism for DNA binding. The residues implicated in forming the sigma (A)-activating region clearly cluster in a flexible segment of the polypeptide on the opposite side of the structure from that predicted to interact with DNA. The structural results are discussed in the context of the rich array of existing mutational data
Hall-conductivity sign change and fluctuations in amorphous NbGe films
The sign change in the Hall conductivity has been studied in thin amorphous
NbGe0.3) films. By changing the film thickness it is
shown that the field at which the sign reversal occurs shifts to lower values
(from above to below the mean-field transition field ) with increasing
film thickness. This effect can be understood in terms of a competition between
a positive normal and a negative fluctuation contribution to the Hall

The equivalence of four extensions of context-free grammars
There is currently considerable interest among computational linguists in grammatical formalisms with highly restricted generative power. This paper concerns the relationship between the class of string languages generated by several such formalisms, namely, combinatory categorial grammars, head grammars, linear indexed grammars, and tree adjoining grammars. Each of these formalisms is known to generate a larger class of languages than context-free grammars. The four formalisms under consideration were developed independently and appear superficially to be quite different from one another. The result presented in this paper is that all four of the formalisms under consideration generate exactly the same class of string languages
