    A Second Look: The Bone and Sinew of the Land: America’s Forgotten Black Pioneers and the Struggle for Equality

    The Bone and Sinew of the Land depicts the Northwest Territory as a place where African Americans “integrat[ed] America’s first free frontier.” Historian Anna-Lisa Cox asserts that what she calls the Great West—Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin—has a hidden, albeit brief, history as a site of equality and freedom for Black pioneers (xvii). This engaging book provides a brief introduction and an innovative approach to studying antebellum African Americans, their lives, and their activism in these increasingly hostile states. Cox is a non-resident Fellow at Harvard University\u27s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, and the author of A Stronger Kinship: One Town\u27s Extraordinary Story of Hope and Faith (Lincoln: Bison Books, 2007), a history of the interracial community of Covert, Michigan. The Bone and Sinew of the Land both grows out of Cox’s earlier work and contributes to the expanding field of studies of northern Black activism

    Procedural Discretionary Decisions and Access to Justice Before Administrative Tribunals

    This thesis considers procedural discretionary decision-making by administrative tribunals and access to justice for marginalized and low-income individuals. I begin by reviewing literature regarding discretionary decision-making, access to justice, procedural justice, and ideal theories focusing on transparent and respectful engagement and dialogue between decision-makers and litigants. I then analyze three case studies regarding procedural discretionary decision-making and accommodations in the hearing process, addressing primarily disability and language barriers experienced by litigants before the Social Benefits Tribunal, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and Landlord and Tenant Board. I then compare theories of discretionary decision-making with actual decision-making practices employed by tribunal adjudicators. While certain positive practices may play a role in achieving more meaningful engagement between decision-makers and parties, my analysis also reveals systemic barriers to access to justice and limitations of procedural discretionary decision-making by tribunals

    Revisiting CHIP Buy-In Programs for Children

    States have a long history of providing families with the option to purchase Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage for their children, but these programs have dwindled in recent years. In a February 2020 Health Affairs blog post, we review states’ experiences with buy-in programs for children, present updated information on the four remaining CHIP buy-in programs, and compare them to child-only coverage on the individual market. Properly designed, targeted, and marketed, buy-in programs could be a cost-effective way of moving toward universal coverage for children

    Formation of the postsynaptic membrane at the skeletal neuromuscular junction (NMJ) requires activation of the muscle-specific receptor tyrosine kinase (MuSK). Few intracellular mediators or modulators of MuSK actions are known. E3 ubiquitin ligases may serve this role, because activities of several receptor tyrosine kinases, G-protein-coupled receptors and channels are modulated by ubiquitination. Here, we report identification of a putative Ariadne-like ubiquitin ligase (PAUL) that binds to the cytoplasmic domain of MuSK. PAUL is expressed in numerous tissues of developing and adult mice, and is present at NMJs in muscle fibers but is not confined to them.Peer reviewe

    Ecological constraints on independent breeding are recognised as major drivers of cooperative breeding across diverse lineages. How the prevalence and degree of cooperative breeding relates to ecological variation remains unresolved. Using a large data set of cooperative nesting in Polistes wasps we demonstrate that different aspects of cooperative breeding are likely to be driven by different aspects of climate. Whether or not a species forms cooperative groups is associated with greater short‐term temperature fluctuations. In contrast, the number of cooperative foundresses increases in more benign environments with warmer, wetter conditions. The same data set reveals that intraspecific responses to climate variation do not mirror genus‐wide trends and instead are highly heterogeneous among species.     Evaluation of an Online Platform for Multiple Sclerosis Research: Patient Description, Validation of Severity Scale, and Exploration of BMI Effects on Disease Course

    Objectives: To assess the potential of an online platform, PatientsLikeMe.com (PLM), for research in multiple sclerosis (MS). An investigation of the role of body mass index (BMI) on MS disease course was conducted to illustrate the utility of the platform. Methods: First, we compared the demographic characteristics of subjects from PLM and from a regional MS center. Second, we validated PLM’s patient-reported outcome measure (MS Rating Scale, MSRS) against standard physician-rated tools. Finally, we analyzed the relation of BMI to the MSRS measure. Results: Compared with 4,039 MS Center patients, the 10,255 PLM members were younger, more educated, and less often male and white. Disease course was more often relapsing remitting, with younger symptom onset and shorter disease duration. Differences were significant because of large sample sizes but small in absolute terms. MSRS scores for 121 MS Center patients revealed acceptable agreement between patient-derived and physician-derived composite scores (weighted kappa = 0.46). The Walking domain showed the highest weighted kappa (0.73) and correlation (rs = 0.86) between patient and physician scores. Additionally, there were good correlations between the patient-reported MSRS composite and walking scores and physician-derived measures: Expanded Disability Status Scale (composite rs = 0.61, walking rs = 0.74), Timed 25 Foot Walk (composite rs = 0.70, walking rs = 0.69), and Ambulation Index (composite rs = 0.81, walking rs = 0.84). Finally, using PLM data, we found a modest correlation between BMI and cross-sectional MSRS (rho = 0.17) and no association between BMI and disease course. Conclusions: The PLM population is comparable to a clinic population, and its patient-reported MSRS is correlated with existing clinical instruments. Thus, this online platform may provide a venue for MS investigations with unique strengths (frequent data collection, large sample sizes). To illustrate its applicability, we assessed the role of BMI in MS disease course but did not find a clinically meaningful role for BMI in this setting

    Csm4, in Collaboration with Ndj1, Mediates Telomere-Led Chromosome Dynamics and Recombination during Yeast Meiosis

    Chromosome movements are a general feature of mid-prophase of meiosis. In budding yeast, meiotic chromosomes exhibit dynamic movements, led by nuclear envelope (NE)-associated telomeres, throughout the zygotene and pachytene stages. Zygotene motion underlies the global tendency for colocalization of NE-associated chromosome ends in a “bouquet.” In this study, we identify Csm4 as a new molecular participant in these processes and show that, unlike the two previously identified components, Ndj1 and Mps3, Csm4 is not required for meiosis-specific telomere/NE association. Instead, it acts to couple telomere/NE ensembles to a force generation mechanism. Mutants lacking Csm4 and/or Ndj1 display the following closely related phenotypes: (i) elevated crossover (CO) frequencies and decreased CO interference without abrogation of normal pathways; (ii) delayed progression of recombination, and recombination-coupled chromosome morphogenesis, with resulting delays in the MI division; and (iii) nondisjunction of homologs at the MI division for some reason other than absence of (the obligatory) CO(s). The recombination effects are discussed in the context of a model where the underlying defect is chromosome movement, the absence of which results in persistence of inappropriate chromosome relationships that, in turn, results in the observed mutant phenotypes
