A highly scalable Met Office NERC Cloud model
Large Eddy Simulation is a critical modelling tool for scien- tists investigating atmospheric flows, turbulence and cloud microphysics. Within the UK, the principal LES model used by the atmospheric research community is the Met Office Large Eddy Model (LEM). The LEM was originally devel- oped in the late 1980s using computational techniques and assumptions of the time, which means that the it does not scale beyond 512 cores. In this paper we present the Met Office NERC Cloud model, MONC, which is a re-write of the existing LEM. We discuss the software engineering and architectural decisions made in order to develop a flexible, extensible model which the community can easily customise for their own needs. The scalability of MONC is evaluated, along with numerous additional customisations made to fur- ther improve performance at large core counts. The result of this work is a model which delivers to the community signifi- cant new scientific modelling capability that takes advantage of the current and future generation HPC machine
Worldwide Argus II implantation: recommendations to optimize patient outcomes
Abstract
Background
A position paper based on the collective experiences of Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System investigators to review strategies to optimize outcomes in patients with retinitis pigmentosa undergoing retinal prosthesis implantation.
Methods
Retinal surgeons, device programmers, and rehabilitation specialists from Europe, Canada, Middle East, and the United States were convened to the first international Argus II Investigator Meeting held in Ann Arbor, MI in March 2015. The recommendations from the collective experiences were collected. Factors associated with successful outcomes were determined.
Results
Factors leading to successful outcomes begin with appropriate patient selection, expectation counseling, and preoperative retinal assessment. Challenges to surgical implantation include presence of staphyloma and inadequate Tenonâs capsule or conjunctiva. Modified surgical technique may reduce risks of complications such as hypotony and conjunctival erosion. Rehabilitation efforts and correlation with validated outcome measures following implantation are critical.
Conclusions
Bringing together Argus II investigators allowed the identification of strategies to optimize patient outcomes. Establishing an on-line collaborative network will foster coordinated research efforts to advance outcome assessment and rehabilitation strategies.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/134581/1/12886_2016_Article_225.pd
Interlinkages, Integration and Coherence
This chapter focuses on the national level and studies interlinkages, institutional integration and policy coherence in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. After defining key terms, the chapter reviews how perspectives on interlinkages have shaped a new discourse, followed by an analysis of the steering effects of the global goals on institutional integration and policy coherence. The chapter finds that some measures have been taken by national governments to advance institutional integration through coordination by central agencies and inter-ministerial exchanges. Growing policy coherence, however, is not clearly observable. Existing barriers in political-administrative systems preventing institutional integration and policy coherence have not vanished with the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals. Although recent studies have considerably enhanced knowledge on the conceptual understanding of interlinkages, integration and coherence, empirical data about how these concepts play out in practice at national level is still very limited
Nurses' wellâbeing during the coronavirus (2019) pandemic: A longitudinal mixedâmethods study
Abstract Aim To determine prevalence, predictors and change over time of nurses' and student nurses' mental health and wellâbeing, and explore nurses' perceptions, barriers and enablers of wellâbeing. Design Longitudinal mixedâmethods survey. Methods Fortyânine students and registered nurses participated from Victoria, Australia. Data were collected from December 2019 to July 2020. Validated psychometrics and freeâtext response questions were employed. Analysis used latent growth curve modelling, Pearson productâmoment correlations and thematic analysis. Results A strong positive correlation was found between selfâdetermination and work wellâbeing, and a strong negative correlation between work wellâbeing and flight risk. Several moderate relationships were found; a moderate positive correlation between work wellâbeing and nurse manager ability, leadership and support, and a moderate negative correlation between burnout and staffing and resource adequacy. Collegial nurseâphysician relationships deteriorated. Three themes, physical health, psychological wellâbeing and social connection, were identified as important for nurses' wellâbeing
