The Spectrum of the Baryon Masses in a Self-consistent SU(3) Quantum Skyrme Model
The semiclassical SU(3) Skyrme model is traditionally considered as
describing a rigid quantum rotator with the profile function being fixed by the
classical solution of the corresponding SU(2) Skyrme model. In contrast, we go
beyond the classical profile function by quantizing the SU(3) Skyrme model
canonically. The quantization of the model is performed in terms of the
collective coordinate formalism and leads to the establishment of purely
quantum corrections of the model. These new corrections are of fundamental
importance. They are crucial in obtaining stable quantum solitons of the
quantum SU(3) Skyrme model, thus making the model self-consistent and not
dependent on the classical solution of the SU(2) case. We show that such a
treatment of the model leads to a family of stable quantum solitons that
describe the baryon octet and decuplet and reproduce their masses in a

Energies of Quantum QED Flux Tubes
In this talk I present recent studies on vacuum polarization energies and
energy densities induced by QED flux tubes. I focus on comparing three and four
dimensional scenarios and the discussion of various approximation schemes in

Parton distributions in the chiral quark model: a continuum computation
We compute the parton distributions for the chiral quark model. We present a
new technique for performing such computations based on Green functions. This
approach avoids a discretization of the spectrum. It therefore does not need
any smoothing procedures.
The results are similar to those of other groups, however the distributions

Diquarks and Exotic Spectroscopy
We propose that the recently discovered \Theta baryon is a bound state of
four quarks and an antiquark, containing two highly correlated ud-pairs. If so,
the \Theta baryon has positive parity, and it lies in an near-ideally mixed
SU(3)_{f} \mathbf{\bar{10}}_{f} oplus \mathbf{8}_{f}. The Roper resonance and
the P_{11}(1710) fit naturally into this classification. We predict an isospin
3/2 multiplet of \Xi's (S=-2) with J^{\Pi}=\half^{+} around 1750 MeV. A search
for manifestly exotic \Xi^{+} and \Xi^{--} in this mass range could provide a
sharp test of our proposal. We predict that charm and bottom analogues of the

Chiral Quark Model
In this talk I review studies of hadron properties in bosonized chiral quark
models for the quark flavor dynamics. Mesons are constructed from
Bethe--Salpeter equations and baryons emerge as chiral solitons. Such models
require regularization and I show that the two--fold Pauli--Villars
regularization scheme not only fully regularizes the effective action but also
leads the scaling laws for structure functions. For the nucleon structure
functions the present approach serves to determine the regularization
prescription for structure functions whose leading moments are not given by
matrix elements of local operators. Some numerical results are presented for

On photoexcitation of baryon antidecuplet
We show that the photoexcitation of the baryon antidecuplet, suggested by the
soliton classification of low-lying baryons, is strongly suppressed on the
proton target. The process occurs mostly on the neutron target. This
qualitative prediction can be useful in identifying the non-exotic members of
the antidecuplet in the known baryon spectrum. We also analyze the
interrelation between photocouplings of various baryon multiplets in the
soliton picture and in the nonrelativistic quark model.Comment: 9 pages, one Latex figur
The Hyaluronan Receptor for Endocytosis Mediates Hyaluronan-Dependent Signal Transduction via Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinases
The hyaluronan (HA) receptor for endocytosis (HARE) mediates the endocytotic clearance of HA and other glycosaminoglycans from lymph and blood. Two isoforms of human HARE, 315- and 190-kDa, are highly expressed in sinusoidal endothelial cells of liver, lymph node, and spleen; HARE is also in specialized cells in the eye, heart, brain, and kidney. Here we determined whether HA binding to HARE initiates intracellular signaling in Flp-In 293 cells stably expressing either the 315- and 190-kDa HARE or the 190-kDa HARE alone. HARE was co-immunoprecipitated with extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 (ERK1/2), c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK), and p38 members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling cascade. ERK phosphorylation increased in a dose- and time-dependent manner when HA was added to cells expressing full-length or 190-kDa HARE, but not cells with vector-only or a HARE(ΔLink) construct with greatly decreased (~90%) HA uptake. HA did not induce phosphorylation of JNK or p38. A maximum increase in phospho-ERK1/2 occurred within 30 min at 5 μg/ml HA, and the response was dampened at \u3e20 μg/ml HA. HA binding did not increase the level of HARE-ERK complexes, but did increase HARE phosphorylation. These findings demonstrate a novel functional response, when HARE binds HA, that leads to activation of ERK1/2, important mediators of intracellular signal transduction
Rapid and Inexpensive Whole-Genome Genotyping-by-Sequencing for Crossover Localization and Fine-Scale Genetic Mapping
The reshuffling of existing genetic variation during meiosis is important both during evolution and in breeding. The reassortment of genetic variants relies on the formation of crossovers (COs) between homologous chromosomes. The pattern of genome-wide CO distributions can be rapidly and precisely established by the short-read sequencing of individuals from F(2) populations, which in turn are useful for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. Although sequencing costs have decreased precipitously in recent years, the costs of library preparation for hundreds of individuals have remained high. To enable rapid and inexpensive CO detection and QTL mapping using low-coverage whole-genome sequencing of large mapping populations, we have developed a new method for library preparation along with Trained Individual GenomE Reconstruction, a probabilistic method for genotype and CO predictions for recombinant individuals. In an example case with hundreds of F(2) individuals from two Arabidopsis thaliana accessions, we resolved most CO breakpoints to within 2 kb and reduced a major flowering time QTL to a 9-kb interval. In addition, an extended region of unusually low recombination revealed a 1.8-Mb inversion polymorphism on the long arm of chromosome 4. We observed no significant differences in the frequency and distribution of COs between F(2) individuals with and without a functional copy of the DNA helicase gene RECQ4A.
