Estimating the number of regular and dependent methamphetamine users in Australia, 2002-2014.
Objective: To estimate the number of regular and dependent methamphetamine users in Australia. Design: Indirect prevalence estimates were made for each year from 2002â03 to 2013â14. We applied multiplier methods to data on treatment episodes for amphetamines (eg, counselling, rehabilitation, detoxification) and amphetamine-related hospitalisations to estimate the numbers of regular (at least monthly) and dependent methamphetamine users for each year. Dependent users comprised a subgroup of those who used the drug regularly, so that estimates of the sizes of these two populations were not additive. Results: We estimated that during 2013â14 there were 268 000 regular methamphetamine users (95% CI, 187 000â385 000) and 160 000 dependent users (95% CI, 110 000â232 000) aged 15â54 years in Australia. This equated to population rates of 2.09% (95% CI, 1.45â3.00%) for regular and 1.24% (95% CI, 0.85â1.81%) for dependent use. The rate of dependent use had increased since 2009â10 (when the rate was estimated to be 0.74%), and was higher than the previous peak (1.22% in 2006â07). The highest rates were consistently among those aged 25â34 years, in whom the rate of dependent use during 2012â2013 was estimated to be 1.50% (95% CI, 1.05â2.22%). There had also been an increase in the rate of dependent use among those aged 15â24 years (in 2012â13 reaching 1.14%; 95% CI, 0.80â1.69%). Conclusions: There have been increases over the past 12 years in the numbers of regular and dependent methamphetamine users in Australia. Our estimates suggest that the most recent numbers are the highest for this period, and that the increase has been most marked among young adults (those aged 15â34 years)

Hf silicate/silicide formation has been reported in almost all literature studies of Hf based oxides on Si, using different methods of preparation. A silicate interface resembles close to the traditional Si/SiO2. The silicate very likely forms a very sharp interface between the Si substrate and the metal oxide, and would be suitable for device applications. However, the thermal instability of the interfacial silicate/oxide film leads to silicidation, causing a dramatic loss of the gate oxide integrity. Despite the importance of the Hf silicide surface and interface with Si, only a few studies of this surface are present in the literature, and a structural determination of the surface has not been reported. This paper reports a study of the Hf silicide formation upon annealing by using a combination of XPS, LEED, and x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) analyses. Our results clearly indicate the formation of a unique ordered Hf silicide phase (HfSi2), which starts to crystallize when the annealing temperature is higher than 550 °C.High dielectric constant materials, such as HfO2, have been extensively studied as alternatives to SiO2 in new generations of Si based devices. Plasma Levels of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor and d-Dopachrome Tautomerase Show a Highly Specific Profile in Early Life.
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic, constitutively expressed, pro-inflammatory cytokine and an important regulator of immune responses. d-dopachrome tautomerase (DDT), a newly described member of the MIF protein superfamily, shares sequence homology and biological activities with MIF. We recently reported that high expression levels of MIF sustain innate immune responses in newborns. Here, we elected to further characterize age-dependent MIF expression and to define whether DDT shares a similar expression profile with MIF. Therefore, we delineated the circulating concentrations of MIF and DDT throughout life using a large cohort of 307 subjects including fetuses, newborns, infants, children, and adults. Compared to levels measured in healthy adults (median: 5.7âng/ml for MIF and 16.8âng/ml for DDT), MIF and DDT plasma concentrations were higher in fetuses (median: 48.9 and 29.6âng/ml), increased further at birth (median: 82.6 and 52.0âng/ml), reached strikingly elevated levels on postnatal day 4 (median: 109.5 and 121.6âng/ml), and decreased to adult levels during the first months of life. A strong correlation was observed between MIF and DDT concentrations in all age groups (Râ=â0.91, Pâ<â0.0001). MIF and DDT levels correlated with concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor, a protein upregulated under low oxygen tension and implicated in vascular and lung development (Râ=â0.70, Pâ<â0.0001 for MIF and Râ=â0.65, Pâ<â0.0001 for DDT). In very preterm infants, lower levels of MIF and DDT on postnatal day 6 were associated with an increased risk of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia and late-onset neonatal sepsis. Thus, MIF and DDT plasma levels show a highly specific developmental profile in early life, supporting an important role for these cytokines during the neonatal period

Quantum Eavesdropping without Interception: An Attack Exploiting the Dead Time of Single Photon Detectors
The security of quantum key distribution (QKD) can easily be obscured if the
eavesdropper can utilize technical imperfections of the actual implementation.
Here we describe and experimentally demonstrate a very simple but highly
effective attack which even does not need to intercept the quantum channel at
all. Only by exploiting the dead time effect of single photon detectors the
eavesdropper is able to gain (asymptotically) full information about the
generated keys without being detected by state-of-the-art QKD protocols. In our
experiment, the eavesdropper inferred up to 98.8% of the key correctly, without
increasing the bit error rate between Alice and Bob significantly. Yet, we find
an evenly simple and effective countermeasure to inhibit this and similar
attacks
Feasibility of free space quantum key distribution with coherent polarization states
We demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of free space quantum key
distribution with continuous variables under real atmospheric conditions. More
specifically, we transmit coherent polarization states over a 100m free space
channel on the roof of our institute's building. In our scheme, signal and
local oscillator are combined in a single spatial mode which auto-compensates
atmospheric fluctuations and results in an excellent interference. Furthermore,
the local oscillator acts as spatial and spectral filter thus allowing
unrestrained daylight operation.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, extensions in sections 2, 3.1, 3.2 and 4. This

A comparison of two molecular methods for diagnosing leptospirosis from three different sample types in patients presenting with fever in Laos.
OBJECTIVES: To compare two molecular assays (rrs quantitative PCR (qPCR) versus a combined 16SrRNA and LipL32 qPCR) on different sample types for diagnosing leptospirosis in febrile patients presenting to Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Laos. METHODS: Serum, buffy coat and urine samples were collected on admission, and follow-up serum âŒ10 days later. Leptospira spp. culture and microscopic agglutination tests (MAT) were performed as reference standards. Bayesian latent class modelling was performed to estimate sensitivity and specificity of each diagnostic test. RESULTS: In all, 787 patients were included in the analysis: 4/787 (0.5%) were Leptospira culture positive, 30/787 (3.8%) were MAT positive, 76/787 (9.7%) were rrs qPCR positive and 20/787 (2.5%) were 16SrRNA/LipL32 qPCR positive for pathogenic Leptospira spp. in at least one sample. Estimated sensitivity and specificity (with 95% CI) of 16SrRNA/LipL32 qPCR on serum (53.9% (33.3%-81.8%); 99.6% (99.2%-100%)), buffy coat (58.8% (34.4%-90.9%); 99.9% (99.6%-100%)) and urine samples (45.0% (27.0%-66.7%); 99.6% (99.3%-100%)) were comparable with those of rrs qPCR, except specificity of 16SrRNA/LipL32 qPCR on urine samples was significantly higher (99.6% (99.3%-100%) vs. 92.5% (92.3%-92.8%), p <0.001). Sensitivities of MAT (16% (95% CI 6.3%-29.4%)) and culture (25% (95% CI 13.3%-44.4%)) were low. Mean positive Cq values showed that buffy coat samples were more frequently inhibitory to qPCR than either serum or urine (p <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Serum and urine are better samples for qPCR than buffy coat, and 16SrRNA/LipL32 qPCR performs better than rrs qPCR on urine. Quantitative PCR on admission is a reliable rapid diagnostic tool, performing better than MAT or culture, with significant implications for clinical and epidemiological investigations of this global neglected disease
Comparative chromosome painting discloses homologous Segments in distantly related mammals
Comparative chromosome painting, termed ZOO-FISH, using DNA libraries from flow
sorted human chromosomes 1,16,17 and X, and mouse chromosome 11 discloses the
presence of syntenic groups in distantly related mammalian Orders ranging from
primates (Homo sapiens), rodents (Mus musculus), even-toed ungulates (Muntiacus
muntjak vaginalis and Muntiacus reevesi) and whales (Balaenoptera physalus). These
mammalian Orders have evolved separately for 55-80 million years (Myr). We conclude
that ZOO-FISH can be used to generate comparative chromosome maps of a large
number of mammalian species

Cell Cycle Related Differentiation of Bone Marrow Cells into Lung Cells
Green-fluorescent protein (GFP) labeled marrow cells transplanted into lethally irradiated mice can be detected in the lungs of transplanted mice and have been shown to express lung specific proteins while lacking the expression of hematopoietic markers. We have studied marrow cells induced to transit cell cycle by exposure to IL-3, IL-6, IL-11 and steel factor at different times of culture corresponding to different phases of cell cycle. We have found that marrow cells at the G1/S interface have a 3-fold increase in cells which assume a lung phenotype and that this increase is no longer seen in late S/G2. These cells have been characterized as GFP{sup +} CD45{sup -} and GFP{sup +} cytokeratin{sup +}. Thus marrow cells with the capacity to convert into cells with a lung phenotype after transplantation show a reversible increase with cytokine induced cell cycle transit. Previous studies have shown the phenotype of bone marrow stem cells fluctuates reversibly as these cells traverse cell cycle, leading to a continuum model of stem cell regulation. The present studies indicate that marrow stem cell production of nonhematopoietic cells also fluctuates on a continuum
Nitrogen and sulphur management: challenges for organic sources in temperate agricultural systems
A current global trend towards intensification or specialization of agricultural enterprises has been accompanied by increasing public awareness of associated environmental consequences. Air and water pollution from losses of nutrients, such as nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S), are a major concern. Governments have initiated extensive regulatory frameworks, including various land use policies, in an attempt to control or reduce the losses. This paper presents an overview of critical input and loss processes affecting N and S for temperate climates, and provides some background to the discussion in subsequent papers evaluating specific farming systems. Management effects on potential gaseous and leaching losses, the lack of synchrony between supply of nutrients and plant demand, and options for optimizing the efficiency of N and S use are reviewed. Integration of inorganic and organic fertilizer inputs and the equitable re-distribution of nutrients from manure are discussed. The paper concludes by highlighting a need for innovative research that is also targeted to practical approaches for reducing N and S losses, and improving the overall synchrony between supply and demand
