Deletion of geophone temperature sensor
Initially the LSP design included a geophone temperature sensor in one of the geophones. This ATM is written to provide the rationale for not incorporating the temperature sensor in the Lunar Seismic Profiling (LSP) design.prepared by E. Weidner

Measuring and Changing Preschool Children\u27s Stuttering Attitudes
Background: Negative or uninformed stuttering attitudes proliferate among the general public, and burgeoning research has shown that such attitudes might emerge as early as the preschool years. Despite decades of research on the topic, much remains unknown about the origin of stuttering attitudes and the factors that bear on their development. Moreover, conclusive recommendations to improve attitudes toward stuttering have yet to be advanced.;Purpose: This study sought (a) to objectively measure stuttering attitudes among preschool children, (b) to examine predictive factors that might account for those attitudes, and (c) to determine the effect of a new educational program on improving preschoolers\u27 stuttering attitudes. It was hypothesized that children would hold uninformed or negative attitudes about stuttering, which would be amenable to improvement following the educational program. Children\u27s experience with stuttering and their social cognitive skills were expected to have a positive effect on their stuttering attitudes. Other factors, such as parent attitudes and demographic variables, were expected to have little to no effect.;Method: The stuttering attitudes of 55 preschoolers were measured using the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes--Stuttering/Child (POSHA--S/Child). Data were interpreted relative to children\u27s demographic variables, exposure to stuttering, personal factors, and parent stuttering attitudes (obtained from 38 parent respondents). Thirty-seven children learned about stuttering and sensitive peer interactions by participating in the Attitude Change and Tolerance (InterACT) program. Their POSHA--S/Child ratings were obtained following the program, and compared to a control group.;Results: Pre-post comparisons showed statistically significant improvements in stuttering beliefs and self reactions for children in the experimental group, and no significant attitude change for control participants. Prior exposure to stuttering was associated with more positive baseline attitudes, but other variables had marginal-to-negligible predictive power
Understanding and application of Learning College concepts among community college support staff employees
Research on the Learning College indicates that everyone in the college must support learning. There have not been previous studies that centered on whether or not support staff, a major constituency group in community colleges, participates in supporting learning. This adapted phenomenological study examined staff in a Learning College to determine their understanding and application of the Learning College concept. Three research questions addressed how these employees understand the concept, perceive their roles, and apply Learning College principles. The study was conducted in a theoretical framework combining Learning College, change, and organizational culture theories. Data were collected from a purposive sample of full time employees classified by the human resources department as support staff using pre-screening questionnaires and in-depth interviews that were then coded and analyzed using a typological methodology. Themes identified emphasized learning, the availability of lifelong learning, and the importance of every employee. Support staff actions reflected some principles of Learning College theory, and though respondents understood their role in student success, they did not see this role as supporting learning. The study showed that staff do not fully understand the Learning College concept and believe that staff development would be useful in helping them support learning. With professional development, staff may gain greater understanding about supporting learning. The findings have the potential for impacting social change by: (a) helping support staff feel more valued, and, therefore, likely to perform more effectively; and (b) increasing staff understanding of student learning may give greater meaning to their work. Recommendations encourage college leaders to tap into the support staff as a resource
Numerical Simulation of the Spin Coating of the Interior of Metal Beverage Cans
Using scaling arguments and perturbation theory, we derive the lubrication form of the fluid mechanical equations governing the motion of a thin liquid film on an arbitrarily curved, rotating, axisymmetric substrate. The resulting equations are discretized and then solved numerically using an efficient implicit finite difference algorithm. The primary application for this work is to model the spin coating of the interior of two-piece metal beverage cans, and we consider this problem in some depth. Specifically, we show how adjusting several parameters can eliminate one possible defect in the spin coating process: the tendency for droplets to detach from the substrate when the can is spun at high rotation rates
Flow establishment in a generic scramjet combustor
The establishment of a quasi-steady flow in a generic scramjet combustor was studied for the case of a time varying inflow to the combustor. Such transient flow is characteristic of the reflected shock tunnel and expansion tube test facilities. Several numerical simulations of hypervelocity flow through a straight duct combustor with either a side wall step fuel injector or a centrally located strut injector are presented. Comparisons were made between impulsively started but otherwise constant flow conditions (typical of the expansion tube or tailored operations of the reflected shock tunnel) and the relaxing flow produced by the 'undertailored' operations of the reflected shock tunnel. Generally the inviscid flow features, such as the shock pattern and pressure distribution, were unaffected by the time varying inlet conditions and approached steady state in approx. the times indicated by experimental correlations. However, viscous features, such as heat transfer and skin friction, were altered by the relaxing inlet flow conditions
Mass accretion rates from multi-band photometry in the Carina Nebula: the case of Trumpler 14
We present a study of the mass accretion rates of pre-Main Sequence (PMS)
stars in the cluster Trumpler 14 (Tr14) in the Carina Nebula. Using optical
multi-band photometry we were able to identify 356 PMS stars showing H-alpha
excess emission with equivalent width EW(H-alpha)>20\AA. We interpret this
observational feature as indication that these objects are still actively
accreting gas from their circumstellar medium. From a comparison of the HR
diagram with PMS evolutionary models we derive ages and masses of the PMS
stars. We find that most of the PMS objects are younger than 10 Myr with a
median age of ~3 Myr. Surprisingly, we also find that ~20% of the mass
accreting objects are older than 10 Myr. For each PMS star in Trumpler 14 we
determine the mass accretion rate () and discuss its dependence
on mass and age. We finally combine the optical photometry with near-IR
observations to build the spectral energy distribution (SED) for each PMS star
in Tr14. The analysis of the SEDs suggests the presence of transitional discs
in which a large amount of gas is still present and sustains accretion onto the
PMS object at ages older than 10 Myr. Our results, discussed in light of recent
recent discoveries with Herschel of transitional discs containing a massive gas
component around the relatively old PSM stars TW Hydrae, 49 Ceti, and HD 95086,
support a new scenario in which old and evolved debris discs still host a
significant amount of gas.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication on A&
