    PT Symmetric, Hermitian and P-Self-Adjoint Operators Related to Potentials in PT Quantum Mechanics

    In the recent years a generalization H=p2+x2(ix)ϔH=p^2 +x^2(ix)^\epsilon of the harmonic oscillator using a complex deformation was investigated, where \epsilon\ is a real parameter. Here, we will consider the most simple case: \epsilon even and x real. We will give a complete characterization of three different classes of operators associated with the differential expression H: The class of all self-adjoint (Hermitian) operators, the class of all PT symmetric operators and the class of all P-self-adjoint operators. Surprisingly, some of the PT symmetric operators associated to this expression have no resolvent set

    Photometric and spectroscopic variations of the Be star HD 112999

    Be objects are stars of B spectral type showing lines of the Balmer series in emission. The presence of these lines is attributed to the existence of an extended envelope, disk type, around them. Some stars are observed in both the Be and normal B-type spectroscopic states and they are known as transient Be stars. In this paper we show the analysis carried out on a new possible transient Be star, labelled HD 112999, using spectroscopic optical observations and photometric data.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in IBV

    Effect of diuretics on the plasma lipid profile

    Hypertension, dyslipidaemia, glucose intolerance (associated with insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinaemia) and other abnormalities are complementary coronary risk factors which often occur in association. A familial trait for essential hypertension seems to coexist commonly with defects in carbohydrate and lipoprotein metabolism which can be detected before the appearance of hypertension. Diabetes mellitus as well as obesity promotes the development of hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Moreover, certain drugs used for antihypertensive therapy can further modify lipoprotein and glucose metabolism. Thiazides in high dosage and loop-diuretics can increase serum low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and/or verv-LDL-C and the total C/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio, while HDL-C is largely unchanged; triglycerides (Tg) are also often elevated. Premenopausal women may beprotected from this side effect. Whether diureticinduced dyslipidaemia is dose-dependent and low thiazide doses (i.e. hydrochlorothiazide ≀12·5 mg daily) are less active, awaits clarification. The diuretic-antihypertensive agent, indapamide, given at a dose of 2·5 mg. day−1, seems to exert no relevant effect on serum lipoprotein or glucose metabolism. The potassium-sparing diuretic, spironolactone, also may be largely neutral with regard to lipids. Moreover, potassium sparing diuretics may possibly counteract, at least in part, a dyslipidaemic influence of potassium-loosing diuretics in medium dose. Drug-induced dyslipidaemia, as well as glucose intolerance, represent potentially adverse influences. In the hypertensive population, effective blood pressure control with traditional drug therapy based on thiazide-type diuretics in high dosage led to a distinct decrease in cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality, but a lesser decrease in coronary events. The prognostic relevance of drug-induced metabolic changes such as dyslipidaemia, altered insulin sensitivity, and glucose intolerance awaits further clarification. It is of clinical interest that several of the generally available antihypertensive drugs seem to be metabolically ‘neutral' or sometimes perhaps even potentially beneficial with regard to the lipoprotein and glucose metabolis

    Quantum properties of the electron field in Kerr-Newman black hole manifolds

    We study some spectral features of the one-particle electron Hamiltonian obtained by separating the Dirac equation in a Kerr-Newman black hole background. We find that the essential spectrum includes the whole real line. As a consequence, there is no gap in the spectrum and discrete eigenvalues are not allowed for any value of the black hole charge QQ and angular momentum JJ.     Perturbation Theory of Schr\"odinger Operators in Infinitely Many Coupling Parameters

    In this paper we study the behavior of Hamilton operators and their spectra which depend on infinitely many coupling parameters or, more generally, parameters taking values in some Banach space. One of the physical models which motivate this framework is a quantum particle moving in a more or less disordered medium. One may however also envisage other scenarios where operators are allowed to depend on interaction terms in a manner we are going to discuss below. The central idea is to vary the occurring infinitely many perturbing potentials independently. As a side aspect this then leads naturally to the analysis of a couple of interesting questions of a more or less purely mathematical flavor which belong to the field of infinite dimensional holomorphy or holomorphy in Banach spaces. In this general setting we study in particular the stability of selfadjointness of the operators under discussion and the analyticity of eigenvalues under the condition that the perturbing potentials belong to certain classes.Comment: 25 pages, Late

    Information on the replication of viral haemorrhagic fever viruses is not readily available and has never been analysed in a comparative approach. Here, we compared the cell culture growth characteristics of haemorrhagic fever viruses (HFV), of the Arenaviridae, Filoviridae, Bunyaviridae, and Flavivridae virus families by performing quantitative analysis of cell culture supernatants by (i) electron microscopy for the quantification of virus particles, (ii) quantitative real time PCR for the quantification of genomes, and (iii) determination of focus forming units by coating fluorescent antibodies to infected cell monolayers for the quantification of virus infectivity
