Streaming providers are investing worldwide in more and more self-produced content and they are serious competitors to established broadcast companies. Complex narrative worlds and multilayered character ensembles characterize their original series. In addition, Netflix & Co. emphasize the diversity and variety of their products in their self-marketing, which is supposed to differ considerably from the more traditional and heterosexual, male-oriented, linear television. In the sense of gender media studies with an intersectional perspective, this study examines the transnational, original series productions of the providers active on the German market. It becomes evident that Subscription-Video-on-Demand (SVoD) originals are more diverse, but not to the extent that self-marketing promises. What should be emphasized is that the transnational reception perspective enables diversity regarding the reception of ethnicities and sexual orientations. However, also gender stereotypes are reproduced and intersectional multiple discrimination in terms of age and gender can be identified

Conformational dynamics of a single protein monitored for 24 hours at video rate

We use plasmon rulers to follow the conformational dynamics of a single protein for up to 24 h at a video rate. The plasmon ruler consists of two gold nanospheres connected by a single protein linker. In our experiment, we follow the dynamics of the molecular chaperone heat shock protein 90, which is known to show open and closed conformations. Our measurements confirm the previously known conformational dynamics with transition times in the second to minute time scale and reveals new dynamics on the time scale of minutes to hours. Plasmon rulers thus extend the observation bandwidth 3/4 orders of magnitude with respect to single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer and enable the study of molecular dynamics with unprecedented precision

Antecedents of Exercise Dependence in Ultra-Endurance Sports: Reduced Basic Need Satisfaction and Avoidance-Motivated Self-Control

    Get PDF
Initiating and maintaining sports and exercise behavior are usually discussed in terms of strategies for promoting health. In the present study, we analyzed a sample of extreme endurance sport athletes and set out to predict exercise addiction, which is a facet of a sport-related health risk. We therefore draw on self-determination theory (Deci and Ryan, 1985, 2000), according to which low basic psychological need satisfaction can lead to excessive compensatory behavior. We aim to disentangle the effects of need satisfaction in the activity itself (exercising) and outside the activity (work/leisure) on exercise addiction. Furthermore, we propose anxious self-motivation as a mediator and tested whether it links low basic need satisfaction with exercise dependence. A correlational study with 323 multi-triathlon athletes confirmed our hypothesis that need satisfaction in work/leisure (but not in sports) is negatively related to exercise addiction. Furthermore, only need for competence in both domains (sport, work/leisure) is associated with anxious self-motivation. Mediation models showed that low competence satisfaction leads to anxious self-motivation that in turn predicts exercise addiction. The results are discussed critically in terms of their practical and theoretical implications for promoting health through sport and exercise

The state of innovation and media viability in East Africa: from indepth media house surveys

Media houses globally are grappling with how best to produce quality content while at the same time remaining financially viable in the wake of shrinking revenues, technological disruptions, the emergence of peripheral content creators, competition for advertisement revenues from big tech platforms, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a myriad of other changes in the ecosystem. Despite these challenges, it is in the interest of the public that news media organisations (NMOs) produce quality content and do so in a financially sustainable fashion. Media viability, that is, producing quality journalism in a financially sustainable way, is, therefore, a growing area of focus. To this end, the Media Futures East Africa Project, jointly implemented by the Aga Khan University\u27s Graduate School of Media and Communications and DW Akademie, set out to investigate the state of innovation and media viability in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The research was conducted in two phases. The first phase studied the ecosystem – the political, economic, social, technological, and community environment – in which East African news media organisations operate at the national level. Generally, the findings indicate that the East African media sector is considerably young. Save for the print NMOs, which are predominantly 11 years and older, about 60% of the TV, radio, digital, and multimedia platforms have been in existence for just 10 years or less. This may be a disadvantage in terms of lack of experience and a high startup failure rate. However, studies have also shown that young media organisations are more likely to experiment with new areas and explore possible new business models without the added hurdle of undoing entrenched systems

Satisfying the Need for Relatedness Among Teachers: Benefits of Searching for Social Support

The satisfaction of teachers’ need for relatedness is an important pre-condition for teachers’ wellbeing. Receiving social support plays an important role in satisfying the need for relatedness. Following job crafting theory, the present study aims to examine (1) whether searching for social support results in an increase in the satisfaction of the need for relatedness and (2) whether this effect is mediated by an increase of received social support from the school principal and from colleagues. Using longitudinal data (N = 1071) we calculated residualized change scores and applied structural equation modeling to test the hypothesized mediation model. Results confirmed the beneficial effect of searching for social support on the satisfaction of the need for relatedness. This effect included a direct effect and an indirect effect through the receipt of social support from colleagues. The receipt of social support from the school principal was positively related to searching for social support but was unrelated to the satisfaction of the need for relatedness. These findings emphasize the importance that teachers build strong and supportive relationships within the school team, as this helps to satisfy their need for relatedness, which in turn contributes to better wellbeing among teachers

School principals’ social support and teachers’ basic need satisfaction: The mediating role of job demands and job resources

Many teachers report high levels of occupational stress. Teachers’ basic need satisfaction is essential for teachers’ well-being at work. Social support from school principals is assumed to play an important role for teachers’ basic need satisfaction. However, the underlying mechanisms of the relationship between social support from school principals and teachers’ basic need satisfaction are mostly unknown. Previous research suggests that job demands and job resources may play an important mediating role. Therefore, we examine whether teachers’ perceived job demands and job resources serve as mediators between social support from the school principal and teachers’ basic need satisfaction. Using longitudinal data of N = 1071 teachers over the course of one school year, we applied structural equation modelling to test the hypothesised mediation model. Results showed that the relationship between social support from the school principal and teachers’ basic need satisfaction was mediated by teachers’ perceived job demands and job resources. Particularly, the job demand ‘unclear organisational conditions’ and job resource ‘social support from colleagues’ indicated the strongest effects on teachers’ basic need satisfaction. These findings emphasise the responsibility of school principals to provide social support to their teachers and create a well-structured and supportive workplace. In doing so, school principals contribute to a work environment in which teachers can thrive

Replacement of mouse Sox10 by the Drosophila ortholog Sox100B provides evidence for co-option of SoxE proteins into vertebrate-specific gene-regulatory networks through altered expression

AbstractNeural crest cells and oligodendrocytes as the myelinating glia of the central nervous system exist only in vertebrates. Their development is regulated by complex regulatory networks, of which the SoxE-type high-mobility-group domain transcription factors Sox8, Sox9 and Sox10 are essential components. Here we analyzed by in ovo electroporation in chicken and by gene replacement in the mouse whether the Drosophila ortholog Sox100B can functionally substitute for vertebrate SoxE proteins. Sox100B overexpression in the chicken neural tube led to the induction of neural crest cells as previously observed for vertebrate SoxE proteins. Furthermore, many aspects of neural crest and oligodendrocyte development were surprisingly normal in mice in which the Sox10 coding information was replaced by Sox100B arguing that Sox100B integrates well into the gene-regulatory networks that drive these processes. Our results therefore provide strong evidence for a model in which SoxE proteins were co-opted to these gene-regulatory networks mainly through the acquisition of novel expression patterns. However, later developmental defects in several neural crest derived lineages in mice homozygous for the Sox100B replacement allele indicate that some degree of functional specialization and adaptation of SoxE protein properties have taken place in addition to the co-option event
