    fem*MAP Berlin 2049: Feminist spatial systems for a non-sexist city

    In search of a feminist perspective for Berlin and an answer to the question of what a non-sexist city could and should look like, an analysis of hegemonic and feminist spatial systems was carried out based on practice-based teaching research formats. Using critical mapping (Harley, 1989; Wood, 1992) with a collective-feminist approach, this paper will demonstrate the potential of the map as a tool that allows for a non-hegemonic perspective of space. The mapping research reveals how the dichotomy of the terms public and private determines hegemonic spatial systems and how the concept of commons as a counter-image and third spatial realm opens up a possible typology of feminist spatial systems. Thus, in the evaluation of the results, the need for new common notions in urban planning discourse is discussed.publicad

    Die Fähigkeit von Kolloiden zur Selbstorganisation ist nicht nur ein faszinierendes Naturphänomen sondern wird heutzutage in vielen technischen Anwendungen genutzt. So kommen unter anderem bei der Entwicklung von Batterieelektroden und Katalysatorträgern kolloidale Kristalle zum Einsatz. Häufig werden Polymerkolloide verwendet, die von allen Verfahrensschritten moderate Temperaturen verlangen. Deshalb eignen sich kalte Plasmen, zum Beispiel Dielektrisch Behinderte Entladungen (DBE), zur Weiterverarbeitung der kolloidalen Kristalle. Diese Arbeit greift drei aufeinander aufbauende Fragestellungen aus dem Bereich kolloidaler Kristalle auf, deren Gemeinsamkeit darin besteht, dass die Lösungsansätze auf dem Einsatz der DBE basieren. Die elektrochemische Abscheidung von leitenden Materialien in den Zwischenräumen kolloidaler Kristalle ist ein Verfahren, dass unter anderem der Herstellung dreidimensionaler geordneter makroporöser (3DOM) Materialien für Batterieelektroden dienen kann. Gerade bei dafür relevanten Materialien, wie Kupfer, Aluminium und Lithium kommt es während der elektrochemischen Abscheidung aus Ionischen Flüssigkeiten häufig zur Verschiebung der Kolloide. Das Material verliert dadurch die gewünschte Struktur. Ein Verfahren, dass diese Verschiebung durch die Kombination einer DBE in Sauerstoff mit einer Polysiloxanbeschichtung zu verhindern vermag wird vorgestellt. Anschließend wird die Frage beantwortet, ob sich 3DOM-Materialien durch eine Beschichtung kolloidaler Kristalle in einer DBE erzeugen lassen, die aus Materialien bestehen, deren Abscheidung elektrochemisch nicht möglich ist. Unter Anwendung der DBE in einem Gemisch aus Stickstoff und Silan werden 3DOM-Strukturen aus Siliziumnitridverbindungen präpariert. In einem weiteren Schritt lassen sich diese Verbindungen durch Plasmabehandlung umwandeln, sodass ohne Veränderung der Ordnung Siliziumdioxidstrukturen entstehen. Die zuvor gewonnenen Ergebnisse in den Bereichen Funktionalisierung und Beschichtung mittels DBE lassen sich auf zweidimensionale kolloidale Kristalle übertragen. Ein Konzept zur lithografischen Präparation strukturierter Substrate wird vorgestellt. Die DBE wird dabei zum Plasmaätzen der Kolloide in Sauerstoff und zur Beschichtung der Substrate eingesetzt.The ability of colloids to form self-organized structures is not only a fascinating natural phenomenon, but is nowadays used in many technical applications. Among other scientific areas colloidal crystals find application in the developement of battery electrodes and catalyst supports. Mostly polymer colloids are in use, which require moderate temperatures in all process steps they pass. Therefore cold plasmas, like Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBD), are suitable for such processes. in this work three consecutive issues are studied, who have in common that the approach for their solution includes the application of a DBD. The electrochemical deposition of conducting materials in the interstices of colloidal crystals is a procedure, which can be used to prepare threedimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) materials for battery applications. Especially relevant materials like copper, aluminum and lithium show a tendency to relocate the colloids during electrochemial deposition from Ionic Liquids. The material loses its desired ordered structure. A procedure that prevents this relocation based on a DBD treatment in oxygen and the deposition of a polysiloxane layer is introduced. Subsequently the question if 3DOM-materials can be produced by coating of colloidal crystals in a DBD is adressed. It is shown that 3DOM-structures consisting of silicon nitride compounds and silicon dioxide can be prepared in a DBD. The aforementioned results in functionalization and material deposition by DBDs are transferred to twodimensional colloidal crystals. A concept for the lithographic preparation of structured substrates is introduced. The DBDs are applied for plasma etching of the colloids and for the coating of the substrates

    Experimental insight into the proximate causes of male persistence variation among two strains of the androdioecious Caenorhabditis elegans (Nematoda)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In the androdioecious nematode <it>Caenorhabditis elegans </it>virtually all progeny produced by hermaphrodite self-fertilization is hermaphrodite while 50% of the progeny that results from cross-fertilization by a male is male. In the standard laboratory wild type strain N2 males disappear rapidly from populations. This is not the case in some other wild type isolates of <it>C. elegans</it>, among them the Hawaiian strain CB4856.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We determined the kinetics of the loss of males over time for multiple population sizes and wild isolates and found significant differences. We performed systematic inter- and intra-strain crosses with N2 and CB4856 and show that the males and the hermaphrodites contribute to the difference in male maintenance between these two strains. In particular, CB4856 males obtained a higher number of successful copulations than N2 males and sired correspondingly more cross-progeny. On the other hand, N2 hermaphrodites produced a higher number of self-progeny, both when singly mated and when not mated.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These two differences have the potential to explain the observed variation in male persistence, since they should lead to a predominance of self-progeny (and thus hermaphrodites) in N2 and, at the same time, a high proportion of cross-progeny (and thus the presence of males as well as hermaphrodites) in CB4856.</p

    Employees Receiving Inpatient Treatment for Common Mental Disorders in Germany:Factors Associated with Time to First and Full Return to Work

    Purpose In Germany, return to work (RTW) after inpatient treatment for common mental disorders (CMDs) is a complex process at the intersection of the mental healthcare system and the workplace. This study examined (1) the time to first and full RTW and (2) associated factors among employees receiving inpatient treatment for CMDs. Methods In this prospective cohort study, employees receiving inpatient psychiatric or medical rehabilitation treatment for CMDs were interviewed by phone during their last week before discharge. Follow-up interviews were conducted after 6, 12, and 18 months. Health-, personal, and work-related factors were used from baseline measurement. Parametric survival analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with time to first and full RTW. Results A total of N = 269 participants who stayed at a psychiatric clinic or a medical rehabilitation facility were included. Almost all participants (n = 252, 94%) from both treatment settings reported a first RTW and a full RTW. The time to first and full RTW was shortest among participants from medical rehabilitation (both median 6 days) and longer among participants from psychiatric treatment (median 17 days to first RTW and 73 days to full RTW). While only health-related and personal factors were associated with time to first RTW, leadership quality and needed individual RTW support were associated with time to full RTW. Conclusions More attention to work accommodation needs for RTW in clinical practice and coordinated actions towards RTW in collaboration with key RTW stakeholders in the workplace may support a timely RTW.     Oxygen-Free Production—From Vision to Application

    As oxygen negatively affects most production processes in the metalworking industry, a truly oxygen-free production environment appears attractive in terms of the resulting material and component properties. This overview summarizes research conducted within the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1368. The objectives of this CRC are twofold. First, a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms that govern the interaction between a metal surface and the environment is established. Second, it is researched how this understanding can be exploited to improve current production processes and even develop completely new ones. Herein, data obtained within the first funding period, which already demonstrate that significant effects can be realized in processes such as thermal spraying, cold rolling, compound casting, laser brazing, milling or hot stamping to name just a few examples, are presented. In addition, key aspects such as initial deoxidation of the workpieces, their transport under conditions that prevent reoxidation, and the tools needed to establish and control an oxygen-free process environment are given, and the ramifications with respect to actual applications are discussed

Neben theoretisch-methodischen Überlegungen stehen epochen- und auch disziplinübergreifend europäische Grenzräume im Fokus. Die Beiträge des Bandes analysieren diese Raum- und Grenzkonzeptionen empirisch fundiert mit Blick auf die soziale Konstruktion des Raums, die rechtlichen Verknüpfungen, die Alltagspraxis der Grenze, die Ausprägungen von Geschichtsbewusstsein und Geschichtskultur und die Inklusions- und Exklusionsdynamiken in verschiedenen Epochen.Borderlands are a complex subject to study.     Silver nano particle formation on Ar plasma : treated cinnamyl alcohol

    Metastable induced electron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy are employed to study the adsorption of silver on cinnamyl alcohol films prepared on Au(111) substrates by thermal evaporation. Additionally, the impact of an Ar atmosphere dielectric barrier discharge plasma applied to the cinnamyl alcohol film preliminary to the Ag adsorption is investigated. In both cases silver nano particles with an average diameter of 9 nm are formed. These particles do not interact chemically with the underlying cinnamyl alcohol film. We do not find any influence of the preliminary Ar plasma-treatment on the adsorption behavior at all

    Determinants of Sickness Absence and Return to Work Among Employees with Common Mental Disorders:A Scoping Review

    Purpose To present an overview of the existing evidence on prognostic factors of (recurrent) sickness absence (SA) and return to work (RTW) among workers with a common mental disorder (CMD). This scoping review provides information about determinants for SA and RTW, which could be used to develop better interventions aimed at the prevention of SA and promotion of RTW among workers with a CMD. Methods Relevant articles were identified in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, PSYNDEX, and SINGLE up to October 2016. In order to be included, studies should provide insight into prognostic factors of SA or RTW of workers with a CMD. We classified all factors according to the domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Results Our searches identified 2447 possible relevant articles, of which 71 were included for data extraction. There is consistent evidence in >= 3 studies that previous episodes of CMD, higher symptom severity, previous absenteeism, co-morbidity, high job demands, low job control, high job strain, female gender, lower educational level, smoking behavior, and low perceived general health are predictors of SA in people with CMDs. Earlier RTW is consistently predicted by lower symptom severity, having no previous absenteeism, younger age, and positive expectations concerning sick-leave duration or RTW. Conclusions The amount of research on determinants for SA and RTW in workers with CMD has increased dramatically in recent years, although most studies are from the Netherlands and Scandinavia. There are some research gaps identified in this scoping review that need further attention in primary and secondary studies.
