Enhancing learning through self-explanation
Self-explanation is an effective teaching/learning strategy that has been used in several intelligent
tutoring systems in the domains of Mathematics and Physics to facilitate deep learning. Since all these
domains are well structured, the instructional material to self-explain can be clearly defined. We are
interested in investigating whether self-explanation can be used in an open-ended domain. For this purpose,
we enhanced KERMIT, an intelligent tutoring system that teaches conceptual database design. The resulting
system, KERMIT-SE, supports self-explanation by engaging students in tutorial dialogues when their
solutions are erroneous. We plan to conduct an evaluation in July 2002, to test the hypothesis that students
will learn better with KERMIT-SE than without self-explanation

Balanced Truncation Model Reduction of a Nonlinear Cable-Mass PDE System with Interior Damping
We consider model order reduction of a nonlinear cable-mass system modeled by
a 1D wave equation with interior damping and dynamic boundary conditions. The
system is driven by a time dependent forcing input to a linear mass-spring
system at one boundary. The goal of the model reduction is to produce a low
order model that produces an accurate approximation to the displacement and
velocity of the mass in the nonlinear mass-spring system at the opposite
boundary. We first prove that the linearized and nonlinear unforced systems are
well-posed and exponentially stable under certain conditions on the damping
parameters, and then consider a balanced truncation method to generate the
reduced order model (ROM) of the nonlinear input-output system. Little is known
about model reduction of nonlinear input-output systems, and so we present
detailed numerical experiments concerning the performance of the nonlinear ROM.
We find that the ROM is accurate for many different combinations of model
parameters
Reflective Experiential Learning: Using Active Video Watching for Soft Skills Training
Learning by watching videos has become the dominant way of learning for millennials. However, watching videos is a passive form of learning which usually results in a low level of engagement. As the result, video-based learning often results in poor learning outcomes. One of the proven strategies to increase engagement is to integrate interactive activities such as quizzes and assessment problems into videos. Although this strategy increases engagement, it requires changing existing videos and therefore substantial effort from the teacher. We have developed the Active Video Watching (AVW) system that enables the teacher to use existing videos from YouTube without modifications. The teacher is required to define a set of aspects for videos, which serve as reflective scaffolds in order to increase engagement and focus learners’ thinking. AVW provides a Personal Space for individual learners to link their personal experiences while watching videos. The comments collected can be used by the individuals to reflect on their own thoughts or to be shared with other learners in the Social Space. We conducted a study with postgraduate students on presentation skills. The results show that the level of engagement with AVW was high, and that the aspects were effective as reflection prompts. We plan to conduct further studies related to other types of soft skills, and also to further extend AVW to provide individualized feedback to students
Supporting Constructive Video-based Learning: Requirements Elicitation from Exploratory Studies
Although videos are a highly popular digital medium for learning, video watching can be a passive activity and results in limited learning. This calls for interactive means to support engagement and active video watching. However, there is limited insight into what engagement challenges have to be overcome and what intelligent features are needed. This paper presents an empirical way to elicit requirements for innovative functionality to support constructive video-based learning. We present two user studies with an active video watching system instantiated for soft skill learning (pitch presenta-tions). Based on the studies, we identify whether learning is happening and what kind of interaction contributes to learning, what difficulties participants face and how these can be overcome with additional intelligent support. Our findings show that participants who engaged in constructive learning have improved their conceptual understanding of presentation skills, while those who exhibited more passive ways of learning have not improved as much as constructive learners. Analysis of participants’ profiles and experiences led to requirements for intelligent support with active video watching. Based on this, we propose intelligent nudging in the form of signposting and prompts to further promote constructive learning

Mobile Web services authentication using SAML and 3GPP generic bootstrapping architecture
In this paper we present a platform for the direct consumption of web services by a Mobile Station. We give an architectural solution where Mobile Operators play the role of Trusted Third Parties supplying service credentials that allow a co-located 3GPP Network Application Function and Liberty-enabled Identity Provider entity to implement a controlled Shopping Mall service to Mobile Stations from multiple trust domains. We consider both the protocol and the structure and syntax of the various tokens required to minimise service latency over the bandwidth and performance constrained mobile system, whilst providing adequate security services to protect against the perceived threat model. To validate our proposal we have developed code to create a Web Service test scenario using SAML authentication tokens utilising readily available J2ME, Java Card, J2SE and J2EE platforms, Web Services tools from Apache, the KToolBar emulator from Sun, and the JCOPS suite of tools for Java Card applet development
Use of high density SNP genotypes to determine the breed composition of cross bred dairy cattle in smallholder farms: Assessment of reproductive and health performance
Reproductive performance and disease data were recorded for 2 years on 1,824 dairy cows in smallholder farms using participatory approaches and onfarm recording. Most animals experienced one service to conception. Calving intervals were long, ranging between 261 and 761 days, with an average of 451±101days. Herd level of production (HeL) had significant effect on calving interval. However, there was no difference between crossbreds with different levels of exotic breed percentage or in different HeL classes in disease incidence. Most animals had less than 2 treatment events, despite the high disease burden in the study areas. Mortality rates were low, ranging from 2.13% to 2.65%. Even though the crossbred animals had higher performance compared to indigenous animals, the gains obtained were below what would be possible with better management. These results suggest that crosses with low exotic proportions would be the most optimal for the production systems studied
Electroplating of CdTe thin films from cadmium sulphate precursor and comparison of layers grown by 3-electrode and 2-electrode systems
Electrodeposition of CdTe thin films was carried out from the late 1970s using the
cadmium sulphate precursor. The solar energy group at Sheffield Hallam University has carried out
a comprehensive study of CdTe thin films electroplated using cadmium sulfate, cadmium nitrate and
cadmium chloride precursors, in order to select the best electrolyte. Some of these results have been
published elsewhere, and this manuscript presents the summary of the results obtained on CdTe layers
grown from cadmium sulphate precursor. In addition, this research program has been exploring the
ways of eliminating the reference electrode, since this is a possible source of detrimental impurities,
such as K+ and Ag+ for CdS/CdTe solar cells. This paper compares the results obtained from CdTe
layers grown by three-electrode (3E) and two-electrode (2E) systems for their material properties and
performance in CdS/CdTe devices. Thin films were characterized using a wide range of analytical
techniques for their structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties. These layers have
also been used in device structures; glass/FTO/CdS/CdTe/Au and CdTe from both methods have
produced solar cells to date with efficiencies in the region of 5%–13%. Comprehensive work carried
out to date produced comparable and superior devices fabricated from materials grown using
2E system
A novel use of high density SNP assays to optimize choice of different crossbred dairy cattle genotypes in smallholder systems in East Africa
We present use of SNP technologies to obtain for the first time, rapid, large-scale, in situ estimates of performance of crossbred cows in smallholder herds. Compared to historical approaches, our approach allowed optimum crossbreed choices to be determined more rapidly and without question about the relevance of the environment. High-density SNP assays were used to estimate breed composition for a monitored population comprising 1292 cows from 610 smallholder farms in Kenya. The achieved milk yields are much lower than generally assumed and lactation curves are very flat out to 400 days. In poor production environments, lower grade crosses (containing <60% exotic dairy alleles) had the same yield as high grade crosses. Allowing for the larger size and maintenance requirements of high grade exotics, lower grade exotics will be the most economically productive animals in these environments
