    An Investigation at Mach Numbers of 1.40 and 1.59 of the Effects of Aileron Profile on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Complete Model of a Supersonic Aircraft Configuration

    An investigation has been conducted in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic tunnel at Mach numbers 1.40 and 1.59 to determine the effect of aileron profile on the aerodynamic characteristics of a complete model of a supersonic aircraft configuration. The model had a 40 degree sweptback tapered wing with 10-percent-thick circular-arc sections normal to the quarter-chord line. The ailerons were 20-percent chord and were located on the outboard 50 percent of the wing semispans. The various ailerons investigated included the basic circular-arc profile and three flat-sided ailerons having ratios of trailing-edge thickness to hinge-line thickness t of 0, 0.5, and 1.0. Low aileron effectiveness was obtained with the circular-arc and t = 0 profiles. Increasing the trailing-edge thickness (t = 0.5 and 1.0) resulted in increased effectiveness as well as increased hinge moments with only a slight increase in drag

    Comparative interference by haemolysis in automated assays for bilirubin at multiple analyte concentrations

    The negative interference caused by haemolysis in manual bilirubin assays contrasts with the positive interference reported for some automated methods utilizing the same basic chemistry. A comparison was therefore made of the haemolysis interference associated with several automated bilirubin methodologies: multilayer film (Kodak Ektachem- total bilirubin (TBil), direct bilirubin (DBil), conjugated bilirubin (Bc), unconjugated bilirubin (Bu),; tableted reagents (Baxter Paramax- TBil, DBil); continuous flow (Technicon SMAC — TBil). Thirty serum pools were analysed (five concentrations of bilirubin, 2-229 μmol/l; six concentrations of haemoglobin, 0.00002-0.052 mmol/1). All methods, except one (Bc), exhibited both positive and negative interference, depending upon the relative haemoglobin and bilirubin concentrations. This interference, at any given haemoglobin concentration, was neither constant nor proportional with increasing bilirubin concentration. These complex patterns of interference suggest that the best characterization of interference is obtained when (1) both percentage-difference and absolute-difference ‘interferographs’ are plotted; and (2) the interference is determined at multiple analyte concentrations

    Differential effects of nanoselenium doping on healthy and cancerous osteoblasts in coculture on titanium

    In the present study, selenium (Se) nanoclusters were grown through heterogeneous nucleation on titanium (Ti) surfaces, a common orthopedic implant material. Normal healthy osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) and cancerous osteoblasts (osteosarcoma) were cultured on the Se-doped surfaces having three different coating densities. For the first time, it is shown that substrates with Se nanoclusters promote normal osteoblast proliferation and inhibit cancerous osteoblast growth in both separate (mono-culture) and coculture experiment. This study suggests that Se surface nanoclusters can be properly engineered to inhibit bone cancer growth while simultaneously promoting the growth of normal bone tissue
