International audienceSince the XIX century, the role of green space in French urban policies underwent significant changes. Regarding the objectives of planning, we can identify three periods in which new management practices and many novel typologies of green spaces appeared : functionalist urban planning, sustainable urban planning and ecological urban planning. Therefore, the evolution of urban green spaces was based on “naturalness gradient” : from private garden with a high aesthetic level to multipurpose urban greenways. Nowadays, studies that focus on “nature” in the city are based on tow principles : (i) the evaluation of ecosystem services and (ii) the connectivity of particular habitats. The aim of this paper is to trace the historic evolution of the role of green areas in cities with reference to the diverse theories and practices of urban planning.
Faktor 10 hoch 6 geringe Schadstoffkonzentrationen gemessen.
Boden/Bodenluft/Haft-/Grundwasser inklusive ihrer kausalen
Abhängigkeiten von unterschiedlichsten Steuerparametern. Ferner
weiterentwickelte Computer-Modell YACPIM verwendet. Die
Validierung des weiterentwickelten Computer-Modells erfolgte mit
Hilfe der im Rahmen der Massentransferversuche gewonnenen
Labordaten.
How Data Curation Enables Epistemically Responsible Reuse of Qualitative Data
Data sharing and reuse are becoming the norm in quantitative research. At the same time, significant skepticism still accompanies the sharing and reuse of qualitative research data on both ethical and epistemological grounds. Nevertheless, there is growing interest in the reuse of qualitative data, as demonstrated by the range of contributions in this special issue. In this research note, we address epistemological critiques of reusing qualitative data and argue that careful curation of data can enable what we term “epistemologically responsible reuse” of qualitative data. We begin by briefly defining qualitative data and summarizing common epistemological objections to their shareability or usefulness for secondary analysis. We then introduce the concept of curation as enabling epistemologically responsible reuse and a potential way to address such objections. We discuss three recent trends that we believe are enhancing curatorial practices and thus expand the opportunities for responsible reuse: improvements in data management practices among researchers, the development of collaborative curation practices at repositories focused on qualitative data and technological advances that support sharing rich qualitative data. Using three examples of successful reuse of qualitative data, we illustrate the potential of these three trends to further improve the availability of reusable data projects
A geographical tool for personal exposure assessment
The European policy in urban atmospheric pollution aims at reducing its impact on human health. This problem of public health is closely related to exposure of citizens during the day. Its estimation through persons activities defines the space-time budget. Sooner or later the local authorities in charge of air quality will provide to the population about their collective or individual exposure. We have developed here a tool that supplies this information. It is based on a multi-source approach. It exploits a Geographic Information System (GIS) gathering information such as individuals mobility, the topographic database, and concentrations of pollutants. Maps and dynamic representations of individual exposure are obtained. They display indoor (home, place of work) and outdoor exposure
How Hot or Cool is It to Speak Two Languages: Executive Function Advantages in Bilingual Children
According to the 2009 U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 57 million individuals, ages five and older, living in the United States spoke a language other than English at home. There is a clear and growing number of bilingual individuals and English Language Learners (ELL) in the United States. With these growing numbers, especially within the school-aged population, it is crucial that a clear understanding exist regarding the development of children who are bilingual or learning English as their second language.
There is evidence that bilingual children differ from their monolingual peers in the development of executive function (EF), and specifically demonstrate some advantages on EF tasks. This research has not been expanded to include the new conceptualization of EF as hot and cool. This study seeks to examine bilingual EF advantages in EF in light of this recent conceptualization. A second goal of this study is to identify other psychosocial variables that predict EF in children and, thus, might impact its development. The variables of interest include socioeconomic status (SES), economic stress, parenting practices (e.g., disciplinary practices and relational frustration), and cultural beliefs (e.g., individualism/collectivism).
A sample of 67 bilingual and monolingual English speaking children and their parents/guardians participated in this study. Children completed 4 EF tasks and parents completed a battery which included measures of the psychosocial variables and the BRIEF Parent Form. A MANCOVA model was utilized to examine bilingual differences in EF. Multiple regression models were also used to test for significant predictors of hot and cool EF and general EF (as measured by the BRIEF GEC) among the psychosocial variables.
No significant group differences were found in multivariate analyses. Significant predictors of specific EF measures and hot and cool total scores were identified, including economic stress, age, relational frustration, vertical individualism, and vertical collectivism. These are discussed in light of current literature and clinical applications
This paper addresses both the conceptual complexity and the pragmatic aspect of the ecosystem services concept. By providing a concrete example of assessing ecosystem services, the purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that this complexity is not an obstacle to the application of the concept. In this context buttom-up approach has been developed. Through the characterization of urban vegetation, this ecological assessment studied the functioning of urban trees and quantified ecosystem services using “i-Tree Eco model " in Strasbourg city, France
In it Together: Relationship Transitions and Couple Concordance in Health and Well-Being
Events that change the family system have the potential to impact couple dynamics such as concordance, that is, partner similarity in health and well-being. This project analyzes longitudinal data (≥ two decades) from both partners of up to 3,501 German and 1,842 Australian couples to investigate how couple concordance in life satisfaction, self-rated health, mental health, and physical health might change with transitioning to parenthood and an empty nest. Results revealed couple concordance in intercepts (averaged r = .52), linear trajectories (averaged r = .55), and wave-specific fluctuations around trajectories (averaged r = .21). Concordance in linear trajectories was stronger after transitions (averaged r = .81) than before transitions (averaged r = .43), whereas no systematic transition-related change in concordance of wave-specific fluctuations was found. Findings emphasize that shared transitions represent windows of change capable of sending couples onto mutual upward or downward trajectories in health and well-being
Elucidation of orientation relations between Fe-Cr alloys and corrosion products after high temperature SO2 corrosion
The early stages of corrosion of Fe-Cr-model alloys (2 and 9 % Cr) were investigated after exposure at 650 degrees C in 0.5 % SO2 containing gas by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The impact of the grain orientation of the base alloy on the orientation relations of the corrosion products is presented. After 2 min - 5 min exposure the formation of a multi-layered corrosion zone was discovered. A clear orientation relationship between ferrite and the (Fe,Cr)(3)O-4 spinel could be demonstrated. The obtained results show the importance of the grain orientation on oxidation resistance
