Near infrared spectroscopy of W51 IRS-2
Near-infrared spectra at 2.95-3.5 μm and 3.99-10 μm have been obtained towards W51 IRS-2 and its surroundings, in order to investigate the spatial variations in intensity of the 3.28 μm unidentified feature and the 4.05 μm Brackett-α line. The Br-α and 3.28 μm features occupy a broadly similar spatial zone, which is characterised by an unresolved core responsible for most of the emission, and an extended and considerably weaker halo. Grain properties required to excite the 4.28 microns line, the nature of the 3.28 μm emission, and its relation to the source structure are discussed
What's the evidence that NICE guidance has been implemented? Results from a national evaluation using time series analysis, audit of patients' notes, and interviews
OBJECTIVES: To assess the extent and pattern of implementation of guidance issued by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). DESIGN: Interrupted time series analysis, review of case notes, survey, and interviews. SETTING: Acute and primary care trusts in England and Wales. PARTICIPANTS: All primary care prescribing, hospital pharmacies; a random sample of 20 acute trusts, 17 mental health trusts, and 21 primary care trusts; and senior clinicians and managers from five acute trusts. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Rates of prescribing and use of procedures and medical devices relative to evidence based guidance. RESULTS: 6308 usable patient audit forms were returned. Implementation of NICE guidance varied by trust and by topic. Prescribing of some taxanes for cancer (P <0.002) and orlistat for obesity (P <0.001) significantly increased in line with guidance. Prescribing of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and prophylactic extraction of wisdom teeth showed trends consistent with, but not obviously a consequence of, the guidance. Prescribing practice often did not accord with the details of the guidance. No change was apparent in the use of hearing aids, hip prostheses, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, laparoscopic hernia repair, and laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery after NICE guidance had been issued. CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of NICE guidance has been variable. Guidance seems more likely to be adopted when there is strong professional support, a stable and convincing evidence base, and no increased or unfunded costs, in organisations that have established good systems for tracking guidance implementation and where the professionals involved are not isolated. Guidance needs to be clear and reflect the clinical context
Wegener's granulomatosis and autoantibodies to neutrophil antigens
We report five cases of Wegener's granulomatosis all of whom had clinical and histological evidence of disease activity at presentation and in whom autoantibodies to neutrophil antigens were detected. This test may prove useful for the diagnosis of this serious condition and help to monitor disease activity during treatment
Confinement of knotted polymers in a slit
We investigate the effect of knot type on the properties of a ring polymer
confined to a slit. For relatively wide slits, the more complex the knot, the
more the force exerted by the polymer on the walls is decreased compared to an
unknotted polymer of the same length. For more narrow slits the opposite is
true. The crossover between these two regimes is, to first order, at smaller
slit width for more complex knots. However, knot topology can affect these
trends in subtle ways. Besides the force exerted by the polymers, we also study
other quantities such as the monomer-density distribution across the slit and

M.I.T./Canadian Vestibular Experiments on the Spacelab-1 Mission. Part 1: Sensory Adaptation to Weightlessness and Readaptation to One-G: An Overview
Experiments on human spatial orientation were conducted on four crewmembers of Space Shuttle Spacelab Mission 1. The conceptual background of the project, the relationship among the experiments, and their relevance to a 'sensory reinterpretation hypothesis' are presented. Detailed experiment procedures and results are presented in the accompanying papers in this series. The overall findings are discussed as they pertain to the following aspects of hypothesized sensory reinterpretation in weightlessness: (1) utricular otolith afferent signals are reinterpreted as indicating head translation rather than tilt, (2) sensitivity of reflex responses to footward acceleration is reduced, and (3) increased weighting is given to visual and tactile cues in orientation perception and posture control. Results suggest increased weighting of visual cues and reduced weighting of graviceptor signals in weightlessness
Composition of Ices in Low-Mass Extrasolar Planets
We study the formation conditions of icy planetesimals in protoplanetary
disks in order to determine the composition of ices in small and cold
extrasolar planets. Assuming that ices are formed from hydrates, clathrates,
and pure condensates, we calculate their mass fractions with respect to the
total quantity of ices included in planetesimals, for a grid of disk models. We
find that the composition of ices weakly depends on the adopted disk
thermodynamic conditions, and is rather influenced by the initial composition
of the gas phase. The use of a plausible range of molecular abundance ratios
and the variation of the relative elemental carbon over oxygen ratio in the gas
phase of protoplanetary disks, allow us to apply our model to a wide range of
planetary systems. Our results can thus be used to constrain the icy/volatile
phase composition of cold planets evidenced by microlensing surveys,
hypothetical ocean-planets and carbon planets, which could be detected by Corot

Inhibition of glyoxylate conversion to oxalate in cultured human cells by the carbonyl-scavenging drug, aminoguanidine
Calcium oxalate is the most frequent cause of kidney stones, and is responsible for the damage to kidneys and other organs observed in inherited disorders of oxalate metabolism. Most oxalate produced in the body is derived from its metabolic precursor, glyoxylate. Thus, any means of scavenging glyoxylate to a non-toxic product, thereby diverting it away from oxalate synthesis, has considerable therapeutic implications. Here we show that aminoguanidine, a compound with a proven safety record and used for many years to prevent long-term complications of diabetes, binds glyoxylate covalently and reduces its conversion to oxalate by human liver- and lymphocyte-derived cell lines by >90%. We propose that scavenging glyoxylate with aminoguanidine or its congeners may provide a means of reducing oxalate production in vivo, and advocate the tissue culture system described here as a convenient means for testing such agents in vitro. A serendipitous finding to emerge from our study was the abiotic and strongly pH-dependent formation of oxalate from ascorbate, which has implications for the contribution of ascorbate to urine oxalate excretion

The method and system include isolated nucleic acid sequences encoding triterpene methyltransferases such as triterpene methyltransferases 1, 2, 3. Advantageously, the method and system includes transgenic plant cells via an expression vector for triterpene methyltransferase and optionally various triterpene synthase and prenyltransferase all with tags directing these enzymes to the chloroplast of the transgenic plant cells for using the chloroplast methyl erythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway in the triterpene biogenesis
