Experimental aspects of colour reconnection
This report summarises experimental aspects of the phenomena of colour
reconnection in W+W- production, concentrating on charged multiplicity and
event shapes, which were carried out as part of the Phenomenology Workshop on
LEP2 Physics, Oxford, Physics Department and Keble College, 14-18 April, 1997.
The work includes new estimates of the systematic uncertainty which may be
attributed to colour reconnection effects in experimental measurements of Mw.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. To be published in proceedings of Phenomenology

Higher Education\u27s Greatest Current Opportunity and Responsibility
Preparing the next generation of teachers at all levels from kindergarten through college is higher educationâs greatest current opportunity. Getting it right may be our greatest challenge. The face of science and technology is by deïŹnition changing constantly. Today, many feel that the most important work in science is going on increasingly at and across the interfaces of the traditional discipline. To serve our society well, education in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, and technology must change accordingly. In my view, curricula at all levels (K-16) too often continue to reïŹect only the narrow traditional disciplinary approaches that science has taken in the past, in part due to the existing political structures within academe. Teachers should both appreciate and have understanding of the interdisciplinarity of scientific thought and technological application. I propose that the preparation of all future elementary school teachers contain an interdisciplinary emphasis encompassing all the sciences including mathematics; and that middle and high school science and mathematics teachersâ training be largely interdisciplinary in nature as well
\u3cem\u3eKennedy v. The Baltimore Insurance Company\u3c/em\u3e, 3 H. & J. 367 (1813): The Story of One Baltimore Merchant Among Many Fighting an Insurance Company in Times of War
The Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800âs resulted in many Baltimore merchants obtaining insurance for their vessels and cargo. During this period of unrest, Lemuel Taylor and John F. Kennedy insured a Baltimore vessel which was subsequently captured by the British. This paper contextualizes the case of Kennedy v. The Baltimore Insurance Company within this period and illustrates the struggles faced by many merchants who sought to be reimbursed for their losses. I also tried to focus on the historical backgrounds of the key players to the case, especially Lemuel Taylor and John F. Kennedy. All together, the case of Kennedy v. The Baltimore Insurance Company presents the opportunity to recreate the legal history surrounding maritime insurance in Maryland during the War of 1812

Incentives and disincentives for reducing sugar in manufactured foods: An exploratory supply chain analysis
This policy brief presents the results of a novel food supply chain analysis that identifies insights for governments to consider when designing sugar reduction strategies. It explores the incentives and disincentives to using sugar in manufactured foods throughout the âsugar supply chainâ â the actors and activities that take sugar from farm to fork. It draws on the perspectives of entities working inside this sugar supply chain to explore the following key questions: âą What are the incentives and disincentives for industry to reduce the amount of sugar in manufactured food and drink products? âą At what point along the supply chain do these incentives and disincentives operate? âą Are there opportunities to effectively enhance the incentives and/or lessen the disincentives for reducing sugar

Inversion of stellar fundamental parameters from Espadons and Narval high-resolution spectra
The general context of this study is the inversion of stellar fundamental
parameters from high-resolution Echelle spectra. We aim indeed at developing a
fast and reliable tool for the post-processing of spectra produced by Espadons
and Narval spectropolarimeters. Our inversion tool relies on principal
component analysis. It allows reduction of dimensionality and the definition of
a specific metric for the search of nearest neighbours between an observed
spectrum and a set of observed spectra taken from the Elodie stellar library.
Effective temperature, surface gravity, total metallicity and projected
rotational velocity are derived. Various tests presented in this study, and
done from the sole information coming from a spectral band centered around the
Mg I b-triplet and with spectra from FGK stars are very promising.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures (accepted A&A). arXiv admin note: text overlap
