    Farm-gate nitrogen balances on intensive dairy farms in the south west of Ireland

    peer-reviewedNitrogen management and farm-gate N balances were evaluated on 21 intensive dairy farms in the south west of Ireland for each of four years (2003 to 2006). The mean annual stocking density was equivalent to 202 kg/ha (s.d. 29.6) of N excreted by livestock on the farm. The mean annual farm-gate N surplus (imports – exports) declined between 2003 and 2006 (277 to 232 kg/ha, s.e. 6.8; P < 0.001) due to a decline in annual N imports (fertilizer, feed and imported manures; 335 to 288 kg/ha, s.e. 6.9; P < 0.001). Overall annual fertilizer N use on the farms decreased during the study period (266 to 223 kg/ha, s.e. 6.5; P < 0.001) mainly due to lower inputs for the first application in spring and for the production of first-cut silage. These decreases were partly offset by applying more slurry in spring for early grazing and for first-cut silage. The introduction of white clover resulted in lower N imports on four farms. Export of N from farms was unaffected by reductions in N imports. The mean efficiency of N use tended to increase over time (0.18 in 2003 to 0.20 in 2006). The large variation in quantities of fertilizer N applied on farms with similar stocking densities suggests potential for further improvements in the efficiency of N use. In terms of fertilizer N use, complying with S.I.     Occurrence of Microalgae in Southwestern Louisiana Coastal Salt Flats

    A descriptive analysis of the edaphic algal flora in salt flats along the coastline of southwestern Louisiana is provided. Six salt flats containing the angiosperm Salicornia were surveyed in November 1978, and April 1979, for microalgae. Seven genera of Chrysophycophyta, eleven genera of Cyanochloronta, and eighteen genera of the Chlorophycophyta were found. The most abundant alga was Oscillatoria (sensu Drouet). The most common green alga was Chlorosarcinopsis

    A Systematic Literature Review and Functional Decomposition Summarizing Eusocial Insect Parasite Resistance: A Tool for Biologically Inspired Design

    Resilience is a vital component of multi-agent systems, as a lack of resilience can easily lead to system failure. Resisting the effects of faulted agents can reduce system costs and downtime. Solving the problem of increasing system resilience is not an easy one, however, as some solutions require complex solutions. Eusocial insects face these challenges often, thus making them prime examples to find unique biological solutions to resilience. As such the central question of this work is: What behaviors in eusocial insects can be used to improve muli-agent system resilience to faulted agents? In this work the connection between eusocial insect behaviors and faulted agent resilience is explored, as well as the transfer of these behaviors to generalized functions for multi-agent systems. The hypothesis examined in this work is: if functional decomposition is performed on eusocial insect behaviors for faulted agent resilience, then generalized functions for multi-agent system faulted agent resilience can be identified. This work’s primary contribution is the identification of several generalized functions that can increase resilience to faulted agents, based on eusocial insect behaviors. These functions will provide the basis for future work in biologically inspired design and faulted agent resilience

    Evaluation of the Water Footprint of Beef Cattle Production in Nebraska

    Data were compiled on feed usage to model the amount of water needed to produce beef in typical Nebraska production systems. Production systems where cows were wintered on corn residue utilized 18% less water than systems utilizing native range as a wintering source, because of water allocations. Therefore, the water footprint (gallons of water required to produce one pound of boneless meat) was decreased by 18%. In addition, increasing the dietary inclusion of distillers grains from 0% to 40% decreased the water footprint in the finishing phase by 29%, again based on water allocation. Utilizing corn residue and distillers grains in Nebraska beef cattle systems decreases the overall water footprint of production. Additionally, the water footprint of the systems analyzed was 80% green water as rain, minimizing the environmental impact of beef production on freshwater use and ecological water balance

    Cricket is a global sport played in over 100 countries with elite performers attracting multimillion dollar contracts. Therefore, performers maintaining optimum physical fitness and remaining injury free is important. Fast bowlers have a vital position in a cricket team, and there is an increasing body of scientific literature that has reviewed this role over the past decade. Previous research on fast bowlers has tended to focus on biomechanical analysis and injury prevention in performers. However, this review aims to critically analyze the emerging contribution of physiological-based literature linked to fast bowling in cricket, highlight the current evidence related to simulated and competitive in-match performance, and relate this practically to the conditioning coach. Furthermore, the review considers limitations with past research and possible avenues for future investigation. It is clear with the advent of new applied mobile monitoring technology that there is scope for more ecologically valid and longitudinal exploration capturing in-match data, providing quantification of physiological workloads, and analysis of the physical demands across the differing formats of the game.
