AKARI Near Infrared Spectroscopy: Detection of H2O and CO2 Ices toward Young Stellar Objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present the first results of AKARI Infrared Camera near-infrared spec-
troscopic survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We detected absorption
features of the H2O ice 3.05 um and the CO2 ice 4.27 um stretching mode toward
seven massive young stellar objects (YSOs). These samples are for the first
time spectroscopically confirmed to be YSOs. We used a curve-of-growth method
to evaluate the column densities of the ices and derived the CO2/H2O ratio to
be 0.45 pm 0.17. This is clearly higher than that seen in Galactic massive YSOs
(0.17 pm 0.03). We suggest that the strong ultraviolet radiation field and/or
the high dust temperature in the LMC may be responsible for the observed high
CO2 ice abundance.Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 2 figure
Subaru/HiCIAO imaging of LkH 330 - multi-band detection of the gap and spiral-like structures
We present - and -bands observations of the LkH 330
disk with a multi-band detection of the large gap and spiral-like structures.
The morphology of the outer disk (0\farcs3) at PA=0--45 and
PA=180--290 are likely density wave-induced spirals and comparison
between our observational results and simulations suggests a planet formation.
We have also investigated the azimuthal profiles at the ring and the outer-disk
regions as well as radial profiles in the directions of the spiral-like
structures and semi-major axis. Azimuthal analysis shows a large variety in
wavelength and implies that the disk has non-axisymmetric dust distributions.
The radial profiles in the major-axis direction (PA=) suggest that
the outer region (r\geq0\farcs25) may be influenced by shadows of the inner
region of the disk. The spiral-like directions (PA=10 and 230)
show different radial profiles, which suggests that the surfaces of the
spiral-like structures are highly flared and/or have different dust properties.
Finally, a color-map of the disk shows a lack of an outer eastern region in the
-band disk, which may hint the presence of an inner object that casts a

Machi: Neighborhood and Small Town—The Foundation for Urban Transformation in Japan
The term machi, signifying both neighborhood and small town, is a key element for understanding Japanese urban form and city planning. After tracing the origins of the term, this article explores the historic and contemporary significance of the concept and its particular spatial and socioeconomic forms. The article then argues that the concept of machi influenced the ways in which Japanese planners picked up foreign concepts through the nineteenth and particularly the twentieth century, absorbing some ideas and rejecting others. Building on their perception of the city as composed of urban units that allowed for planning in patchwork patterns, leading Japanese planners carefully selected models—independently of international appreciation—making, for example, the book The New Town by the German planner Gottfried Feder a standard reference. The article concludes by arguing that foreign observers must understand the concept of machi to comprehend contemporary Japanese neighborhoods, city life, and urban forms

In vitro synthesis of phospholipids with yeast phospholipase B, a phospholipid deacylating enzyme
The gene encoding the Saccharomyces cerevisiae phospholipid deacylation enzyme, phospholipase B (ScPLB1), was successfully expressed in E. coli. The enzyme (Scplb1p) was engineered to have a histidine-tag at the C-terminal end and was purified by metal (Ni) affinity chromatography. Enzymatic properties, optimal pH, and substrate specificity were similar to those reported previously. For example, deacylation activity was observed in acidic pH in the absence of Ca2+ and was additive in neutral pH in the presence of Ca2+, and the enzyme had the same substrate priority as reported previously, with the exception of PE, suggesting that yeast phospholipase B could be produced in its native structure in bacterial cells. Scplb1p retained transacylation activity in aqueous medium, and esterified lysophosphatidylcholine with free fatty acid to form phosphatidylcholine in a non-aqueous, glycerin medium. We propose that phospholipase B could serve as an additional tool for in vitro enzyme-mediated phospholipid synthesis
