    Liquid Oxygen Magnetohydrodynamics

    Get PDF
In the cryogenic realm, liquid oxygen (LOX) possesses a natural paramagnetic susceptibility and does not require a colloidal suspension of particles for practical application as a magnetic working fluid. Commercial ferrofluids have performed well in industrial applications, but expanding their workable range to low temperatures requires a suitable selection of the carrier fluid, such as LOX. In this chapter, the equation of motion for the pure fluid is derived and applied to a slug of LOX being displaced by a pulsed magnetic field. Its theoretical performance is compared to actual experimental data with discussion on empirical parameters, sensitivity to measurement uncertainty, and geometric similarity. The 1.1 T pulse of magnetic flux density produced oscillations in the slug of 6-8 Hz, generating up to 1.4 kPa of pressure change in a closed section when the slug acted like a liquid piston. The experiments and theoretical model demonstrate that LOX could be used as a magnetic working fluid in certain applications

COMPARISON OF MARKER AND MARKER-LESS AUTOMATED MOTION CAPTURE FOR BASEBALL PITCHING BIOMECHANICS

The purpose of this study was to measure baseball pitching kinematics with a marker-less motion capture system and compare the results against marker-based measurements. A sample of 114 pitches were captured at 240 Hz simultaneously with a 9-camera marker-less system and a 12-camera marker system. The pitches were thrown by nine baseball pitchers (age 17.0 ± 4.0 yrs). For each trial, the data were time-synchronized between the two systems using the instant of ball release. Coefficient of Multiple Correlations (CMC) were computed to assess the similarity of waveforms between the two systems. Paired t-tests were used to compare differences between the two systems for 3 temporal and 18 kinematic measurements. The CMC for all eight time series analyzed were excellent, ranging from 0.90 to 0.99. Timing of events between the two systems varied by two frames (0.0083 s) or less. Angular positions differed between the two systems up to 14 degrees. Thus, the marker-based and marker-less motion capture systems produced similar patterns for baseball pitching kinematics. However, based on the variations between the systems, it is recommended that a database of normative ranges should be established for each system individually

FVB/N mice are highly resistant to primary infection with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis

Nippostrongylus brasiliensis larvae are particularly susceptible to immunological attack during the pre-lung stage of primary and secondary infections in mice. Whilst most of the common laboratory strains of mice are permissive hosts for the parasite, in this study we report for the first time, the strong resistance of naive FVB/N mice to N. brasiliensis. Damage to larvae is evident within the first 24 h of infection and this may be critical to later larval development and reproductive success. Inflammatory responses in the skin, and larval escape from this tissue were comparable in susceptible CBA/Ca and resistant FVB/N mice, with most larvae exiting within 4 h of a primary infection. Lung larval burdens were also similar between strains, but larvae recovered from FVB/N mice were smaller and less motile. In FVB/N mice, larval colonization of the gut was impaired and worms produced very few eggs. However FVB/N mice did not show enhanced resistance to Heligmosomoides bakeri (also known as Heligmosomoides polygyrus), a nematode largely restricted to the gut. Damage done in the pre-lung or lung stages of infection with N. brasiliensis is likely to contribute to ongoing developmental and functional abnormalities, which are profoundly evident in the gut phase of infection.M. Design, Development, Implementation, and On-orbit Performance of the Dynamic Ionosphere CubeSat Experiment Mission

    Get PDF
Funded by the NSF CubeSat and NASA ELaNa programs, the Dynamic Ionosphere CubeSat Experiment (DICE) mission consists of two 1.5U CubeSats which were launched into an eccentric low Earth orbit on October 28, 2011. Each identical spacecraft carries two Langmuir probes to measure ionospheric in-situ plasma densities, electric field probes to measure in-situ DC and AC electric fields, and a science grade magnetometer to measure in-situ DC and AC magnetic fields. Given the tight integration of these multiple sensors with the CubeSat platforms, each of the DICE spacecraft is effectively a “sensorsat” capable of comprehensive ionospheric diagnostics. The use of two identical sensor-sats at slightly different orbiting velocities in nearly identical orbits permits the de-convolution of spatial and temporal ambiguities in the observations of the ionosphere from a moving platform. In addition to demonstrating nanosat-based constellation science, the DICE mission is advancing a number of groundbreaking CubeSat technologies including miniaturized mechanisms and high-speed downlink communications

Rebooting an Old Script by New Means: Teledildonics—The Technological Return to the ‘Coital Imperative’

    Get PDF
Teledildonics, a form of digital-mediated sexual interaction, opens new possibilities for the understanding of sexual activity. At first glance, it disrupts conventional preconditions and assumptions about sexual interaction, by allowing the dimension of touch despite the physical distance between partners and, ultimately, promoting a sexual dimension definitely disconnected from the reproductive model of sexuality. However, by scrutinizing the design and functionality of the devices, as well as the discourses presented by three commercial companies—LovePalz, Lovense and Kiiroo—I suggest that this technology reinforces the ‘coital imperative’, by equating sexual interaction with penetration of the vagina by the penis. Although permitting other formulations, specifically for non-heterosexual couples, the penetrative act remains a presupposition. In spite of structurally disrupting the reproductive model of sex, teledildonics promotes its strongest corollary.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
