Uniaxial and biaxial soft deformations of nematic elastomers
We give a geometric interpretation of the soft elastic deformation modes of
nematic elastomers, with explicit examples, for both uniaxial and biaxial
nematic order. We show the importance of body rotations in this non-classical
elasticity and how the invariance under rotations of the reference and target
states gives soft elasticity (the Golubovic and Lubensky theorem). The role of
rotations makes the Polar Decomposition Theorem vital for decomposing general
deformations into body rotations and symmetric strains. The role of the square
roots of tensors is discussed in this context and that of finding explicit

Smectic-C tilt under shear in Smectic-A elastomers
Stenull and Lubensky [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 76}, 011706 (2007)] have argued that
shear strain and tilt of the director relative to the layer normal are coupled
in smectic elastomers and that the imposition of one necessarily leads to the
development of the other. This means, in particular, that a Smectic-A elastomer
subjected to a simple shear will develop Smectic-C-like tilt of the director.
Recently, Kramer and Finkelmann [arXiv:0708.2024, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 78}, 021704
(2008)] performed shear experiments on Smectic-A elastomers using two different
shear geometries. One of the experiments, which implements simple shear,
produces clear evidence for the development of Smectic-C-like tilt. Here, we
generalize a model for smectic elastomers introduced by Adams and Warner [Phys.
Rev. E {\bf 71}, 021708 (2005)] and use it to study the magnitude of
Smectic-C-like tilt under shear for the two geometries investigated by Kramer
and Finkelmann. Using reasonable estimates of model parameters, we estimate the
tilt angle for both geometries, and we compare our estimates to the
experimental results. The other shear geometry is problematic since it
introduces additional in-plane compressions in a sheet-like sample, thus
inducing instabilities that we discuss.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Radio and near-infrared observations of the steep spectrum Galactic plane radio source WKB 0314+57.8
Radio and near-infared observations towards the steep spectrum Galactic plane
radio source WKB 0314+57.8 are presented, in order to clarify the nature of
this source. The radio observations include archival and survey data, together
with new Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations at 617 MHz. The
near-infrared observations are in the J and K bands, from the Gemini instrument
on the Shane 3-m telescope. The radio observations show that WKB 0314+57.8 is
extended, with an very steep spectrum (with flux density proportional to
frequency to -2.5 power between 40 MHz and 1.5 GHz). The colour--magnitude
diagram constructed from near-infrared observations of the field suggests the
presence of a z approx 0.08 galaxy cluster behind the Galactic plane, reddened
by about 6 magnitudes of visual extinction. Although the steep spectrum source
has no obvious identification, two other radio sources in the field covered by
the near-infrared observations have tentative identifications with galaxies.
These observations indicate that WKB 0314+57.8 is a relic source in a cluster
of galaxies, not a pulsar.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in MNRAS, typos correcte
Quantification of contaminants associated with LDEF
The quantification of contaminants on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) and associated hardware or tools is addressed. The purpose of this study was to provide a background data base for the evaluation of the surface of the LDEF and the effects of orbital exposure on that surface. This study necessarily discusses the change in the distribution of contaminants on the LDEF with time and environmental exposure. Much of this information may be of value for the improvement of contamination control procedures during ground based operations. The particulate data represents the results of NASA contractor monitoring as well as the results of samples collected and analyzed by the authors. The data from the tapelifts collected in the Space Shuttle Bay at Edwards Air Force Base and KSC are also presented. The amount of molecular film distributed over the surface of the LDEF is estimated based on measurements made at specific locations and extrapolated over the surface area of the LDEF. Some consideration of total amount of volatile-condensible materials available to form the resultant deposit is also presented. All assumptions underlying these estimates are presented along with the rationale for the conclusions. Each section is presented in a subsection for particles and another for molecular films
Migration and generation of contaminants from launch through recovery: LDEF case history
It is possible to recreate the contamination history of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) through an analysis of its contaminants and selective samples that were collected from surfaces with better documented exposure histories. This data was then used to compare estimates based on monitoring methods that were selected for the purpose of tracking LDEF's exposure to contaminants. The LDEF experienced much more contamination than would have been assumed based on the monitors. Work is still in progress but much of what was learned so far is already being used in the selection of materials and in the design of systems for space. Now experiments are being prepared for flight to resolve questions created by the discoveries on the LDEF. A summary of what was learned about LDEF contaminants over the first year since recovery and deintegration is presented. Over 35 specific conclusions in 5 contamination related categories are listed
The 4-H Computer Refurbishing Program: An Implementation Model
The 4-H Computer Refurbishing Program was implemented as a service learning project for the 2006 National 4-H Technology and Leadership Conference. The specific goals of the program were to decrease the number of computers discarded each year and provide 21st century job skills to youth. The program was introduced as a model 4-H\u27ers could take back to their communities to start their own refurbishing efforts. The model is comprised of the following three steps: 1) program planning, 2) inventory management, and 3) technology training
Pesticide And Transformation Product Detections And Age-Dating Relations From Till And Sand Deposits
Pesticide and transformation product concentrations and frequencies in ground water from areas of similar crop and pesticide applications may vary substantially with differing lithologies. Pesticide analysis data for atrazine, metolachlor, alachlor, acetochlor, and cyanazine and their pesticide transformation products were collected at 69 monitoring wells in Illinois and northern Indiana to document occurrence of pesticides and their transformation products in two agricultural areas of differing lithologies, till, and sand. The till is primarily tile drained and has preferential fractured flow, whereas the sand primarily has surface water drainage and primary porosity flow. Transformation products represent most of the agricultural pesticides in ground water regardless of aquifer material – till or sand. Transformation products were detected more frequently than parent pesticides in both the till and sand, with metolachlor ethane sulfonic acid being most frequently detected. Estimated ground-water recharge dates for the sand were based on chlorofluorocarbon analyses. These age-dating data indicate that ground water recharged prior to 1990 is more likely to have a detection of a pesticide or pesticide transformation product. Detections were twice as frequent in ground water recharged prior to 1990 (82%) than in ground water recharged on or after 1990 (33%). The highest concentrations of atrazine, alachlor, metolachlor, and their transformation products, also were detected in samples from ground water recharged prior to 1990. These age ⁄ pesticide detection relations are opposite of what would normally be expected, and may be the result of preferential flow and ⁄ or ground-water mixing between aquifers and aquitards as evident by the detection of acetochlor transformation products in samples with estimated ground-water ages predating initial pesticide application
DEFECTS IN HEMATOPOIETIC DIFFERENTIATION IN NZB AND NZC MICE
Hematopoietic stem cell activity in inbred NZB and NZC mice has been determined by transplantation and endogenous spleen colony assays. Whereas NZB mice show normal colony-forming unit (CFU) activity in the transplantation assay, they show markedly elevated endogenous CFU. NZC mice also show this markedly elevated endogenous CFU activity, but in the transplantation assay show only about 5–10% of normal CFU counts. When NZC stem cells are tested for CFU activity in irradiated recipients of the H-2d type, almost normal colony numbers occur. NZB stem cells however also cannot form colonies in NZC mice. These results suggest that NZC mice have a defect in the micro-environment of the spleen which renders them incapable of allowing transplanted CFU to form colonies. Genetic analysis of both the NZC defect as a CFU recipient, and the elevated endogenous count in NZB and NZC, shows that both are controlled by single recessive genes which are not linked to either coat color, agouti, H-2 or Ig loci. Of even more relevance is the finding that these hematopoietic abnormalities are not linked to the genes involved in controlling autoantibody formation to red cells in the NZB mice. These mice therefore appear to show two distinct hematopoietic abnormalities, the analysis of which may be of considerable value in understanding the detailed events of hematopoietic stem cell differentiation
Determination of surface resistance and magnetic penetration depth of superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films by microwave power transmission measurements
A novel waveguide power transmission measurement technique was developed to extract the complex conductivity of superconducting thin films at microwave frequencies. The microwave conductivity was taken of two laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films on LaAlO3 with transition temperatures of approx. 86.3 and 82 K, respectively, in the temperature range 25 to 300 K. From the conductivity values, the penetration depth was found to be approx. 0.54 and 0.43 micron, and the surface resistance (R sub s) to be approx. 24 and 36 micro-Ohms at 36 GHz and 76 K for the two films under consideration. The R sub s values were compared with those obtained from the change in the Q-factor of a 36 GHz Te sub 011-mode (OFHC) copper cavity by replacing one of its end walls with the superconducting sample. This technique allows noninvasive characterization of high transition temperature superconducting thin films at microwave frequencies
