    This report presents the results of a preliminary study that examines several critical coastal issues for New Hampshire including sea level fluctuations (past, present and future), shoreline migrations, and tidal flooding. Included are: 1) an analysis of sea level changes over the Holocene and resulting shoreline migrations, 2) an assessment of low-lying areas with elevations below selected tidal flooding datums in coastal areas, and 3) an assessment of increases in low-lying areas that are potentially at risk to tidal flooding over the next century due to sea level rise

    Observations of Backscatter from Sand and Gravel Seafloors Between 170-250 kHz

    Interpreting observations of frequency-dependence in backscatter from the seafloor offers many challenges, either because multiple frequencies are used for different observations that will later be merged or simply because seafloor scattering models are not well-understood above 100 kHz. Hindering the understanding of these observations is the paucity of reported, calibratedacoustic measurements above 100 kHz. This manuscript seeks to help elucidate the linkages between seafloor properties and frequency-dependent seafloor backscatter by describing observations of backscatter collected from sand, gravel, and bedrock seafloors at frequencies between 170 and 250 kHz and at a grazing angle of 45°. Overall, the frequency dependence appeared weak for all seafloor types, with a slight increase in seafloor scattering strength with increasing frequency for an area with unimodal, very poorly to moderately well sorted, slightly granular to granular medium sand with significant amounts of shell debris and a slight decrease in all other locations

    This thesis is the author\u27s attempt to locate the origins of policies employed by the United States during World War II to control, through confinement, deportation and repatriation, German and German Jewish nationals living in Latin America. It also recounts the difficulties that several German nationals faced at the hands of a somewhat intransigent but entirely apathetic United States government. Through an examination of select State Department records, memoirs of government officials and letters of Axis nationals interned by the United States during World War II, one can better understand the reasons behind this little known aspect of American foreign policy

    The depth measurements that are incorporated into bathymetric charts have associated errors with magnitudes depending on the survey circumstances and applied techniques. For this reason, combining and comparing depth measurements collected over many years with different techniques and standards is a difficult task which must be done with great caution. In this study we have developed an approach for comparing historical bathymetric surveys. Our methodology uses Monte Carlo modelling to account for the random error components inherited in the data due to positioning and depth measurement uncertainties

    Future impacts of fresh water resource management: sensitivity of coastal deltas

    We present an assessment of contemporary and future effective sealevel rise (ESLR) using a sample of 40 deltas distributed worldwide. For any delta, ESLR is a net rate defined by eustatic sea-level rise, natural gross rates of fluvial sediment deposition and subsidence, and accelerated subsidence due to groundwater and hydrocarbon extraction. Present-day ESLR, estimated from geospatial data and a simple model of deltaic dynamics, ranges from 0.5 to 12.5 mm year-1. Reduced accretion of fluvial sediment from upstream siltation of reservoirs and freshwater consumptive irrigation losses are primary determinants of ESLR in nearly 70% of the deltas, while for only 12% eustatic sea-level rise predominates. Future scenarios indicate a much larger impact on deltas than previously estimated. Serious challenges to human occupancy of deltas worldwide are conveyed by upland watershed factors, which have been studied less comprehensively than the climate change and sea-level rise question

Por este motivo, combinary comparar las medidas de las profundidades recogidas durante muchos anos utilizando diferentes técnicas y normas es una tarea difîcil, que debe ser efectuada con gran precauciôn. En este estudio hemos desarrollado un enfoque para comparar levantamientos batimétricos histôricos. Nuestra metodologîa utiliza la modelaciôn de Monte-Carlo para considerar los componentes de error fortuitos heredados en los datos, debidos a las incertidumbres del posicionamiento y de la medida de las profundidades.Les mesurages des profondeurs qui sont incorporés dans les cartes bathymétriques comportent des erreurs liées aux magnitudes en fonction des circonstances du levé et des techniques appliquées. Pour cette raison, la combinaison et la comparaison des mesurages de profondeur collectés depuis de nombreuses années à l ’aide de techniques et de normes différentes est une tâche difficile qui doit être effectuée avec la plus grande prudence. Dans cette étude nous avons développé une approche pour la comparaison des levés bathymétriques historiques. Notre méthode utilise la modélisation de Monte Carlo pour rendre compte des composantes d ’erreurs aléatoires dont héritent les données en raison des incertitudes liées à la détermination de la position et au mesurage des profondeurs
