The paper presents the results that relate to the opinion of the role and value of non-formal education using interactive workshops of students taking part in a series of meetings organised by the University of Rzeszow. The main method was the diagnostic survey carried out using the CAPI technique (Computer Assisted Personal Interview). Today, it is extremely important to support the traditional formal education with its other forms. As shown in the results, students expect schools to organise non-formal education, which gives them the opportunity to develop interests that stimulate learning. Based on the presented results, we can also say that activities using interactive workshops bring very satisfactory learning outcomes, so it is worth supporting and implementing similar ways of education. The paper presents the results that relate to the opinion of the role and value of non-formal education using interactive workshops of students taking part in a series of meetings organised by the University of Rzeszow. Student activation is one of the most important aspects at all levels of education. The key to success is a properly selected activation method and teaching resources that will interest students and encourage them to act. This article presents suggestions for teaching materials that can be used to activate students at the early school education level. The proposed teaching materials are building blocks, augmented reality technology and a coding mat. The article shows how to apply the given teaching resources and suggests practical examples of tasks. All the proposed teaching materials can be used both for the study of Polish, mathematics and science education, as well as other subjects. One of the most popular at the present time is the coding mat. This is a very simple didactic means that can be used for education, having an additional advantage of the possibility to be prepared independently or together with students. With its help, it is possible to implement educational content at different educational levels, as well as encourage students to learn in an enjoyable, subconscious way.

Mol-CycleGAN: a generative model for molecular optimization

Get PDF
Designing a molecule with desired properties is one of the biggest challenges in drug development, as it requires optimization of chemical compound structures with respect to many complex properties. To improve the compound design process, we introduce Mol-CycleGAN—a CycleGAN-based model that generates optimized compounds with high structural similarity to the original ones. Namely, given a molecule our model generates a structurally similar one with an optimized value of the considered property. We evaluate the performance of the model on selected optimization objectives related to structural properties (presence of halogen groups, number of aromatic rings) and to a physicochemical property (penalized logP). In the task of optimization of penalized logP of drug-like molecules our model significantly outperforms previous results

Diatomaceous rocks of the Jawornik deposit (the Polish Outer Carpathians): petrophysical and petrographical evaluation.

AbstractDiatomites are identified as a group of the critical minerals that are essential to many industrial applications due to a unique combination of their physical properties, i.e. porous and permeable structure, high specific surface area and adsorption capacity, low density and thermal conductivity, and chemical inertness. The present study was undertaken to analyse the relationships between the pore network characteristics, petrophysical parameters, and mineralogical variability of the Lower Miocene diatomites from the Jawornik deposit (Skole Unit, the Polish Outer Carpathians, SE Poland). Five varieties of the diatomites, distinguished on the basis of the macroscopic features, i.e., colour and fracturing effects, have been investigated by SEM, chemical and XRD analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, helium pycnometry, and the Vickers hardness tests. Significantly differing are two varieties. The light-coloured, massive and block-forming diatomites consist mainly of poorly cemented siliceous skeletal remains of diatoms, and represent the rocks with high porosity, low bulk density and low microhardness. The dark-gray silicified diatomites with a platy or prismatic splitting reveal obscured microfossils of diatoms and are the most compact and hard rocks, with poor porosity and higher bulk density. The spatial distribution of the field identifiable rock varieties allows selective exploitation of the diatomites with the predictable petrophysical characteristics that define their future use.

3-D Nucleus Architecture in Oat × Maize Addition Lines

The nucleus architecture of hybrid crop plants is not a well-researched topic, yet it can have important implications for their genetic stability and usefulness in the successful expression of agronomically desired traits. In this work we studied the spatial distribution of introgressed maize chromatin in oat maize addition lines with the number of added maize chromosomes varying from one to four. The number of chromosome additions was confirmed by genomic in situ hybridization (GISH). Maize chromosome-specific simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to identify the added chromosomes. GISH on 3-D root and leaf nuclei was performed to assess the number, volume, and position of the maize-chromatin occupied regions. We revealed that the maize chromosome territory (CT) associations of varying degree prevailed in the double disomic lines, while CT separation was the most common distribution pattern in the double monosomic line. In all analyzed lines, the regions occupied by maize CTs were located preferentially at the nuclear periphery. A comparison between the tissues showed that the maize CTs in the leaf nuclei are positioned closer to the center of the nucleus than in the root nuclei. These findings shed more light on the processes that shape the nucleus architecture in hybrids

The role of ghrelin, leptin and insulin in foetal development

introduction and objective. The growing epidemic of childhood obesity has forced scientists to search for methods to prevent feeding disorders. Increasing interest in appetite regulating hormones has revealed their influence on energy homeostasis after birth or even in utero. state of knowledge. The presence of ghrelin in the stomach of human foetuses and the distinctive production in the pancreas of neonates suggests the role of ghrelin in pre- and post-natal development. The neonatal period appears to be a critical time for the formation of adipose tissue-hypothalamus circuits, thus the amount of adipocytes in foetal life may be a major regulator of food intake. Insulin’s orexigenic effect in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus can be a major modulator of foetal development. objective. This review, based on available literature, aims to analyses the role of appetite regulating hormones in foetal development. summary. Different concentrations of hormones, such as ghrelin, leptin and insulin during foetal life raises the question whether or not they can be modulated, thereby avoiding obesity before birth. Children with pancreas agenesis showed smaller body size at birth, which emphasises the probable role of insulin in foetal growth. Study of sheep foetuses with IUGR confirmed these finding. Appetite-regulating hormones show different roles in foetal development and seem to be essential in the perinatal period
