A unified approach to mapping and clustering of bibliometric networks
In the analysis of bibliometric networks, researchers often use mapping and
clustering techniques in a combined fashion. Typically, however, mapping and
clustering techniques that are used together rely on very different ideas and
assumptions. We propose a unified approach to mapping and clustering of
bibliometric networks. We show that the VOS mapping technique and a weighted
and parameterized variant of modularity-based clustering can both be derived
from the same underlying principle. We illustrate our proposed approach by
producing a combined mapping and clustering of the most frequently cited
publications that appeared in the field of information science in the period
1999-2008
Astronomy using basic Mark 2 very long baseline interferometry
Two experiments were performed in April and September 1976 to determine precise positions of radio sources using conventional Mark 2 VLBI techniques. Four stations in the continental United States observed at a wavelength of 18 cm. The recording bandwidth was 2 MHz. The preliminary results using analyses of fringe rate and delay are discussed and the source positions compared with the results of other measurements
Citation analysis may severely underestimate the impact of clinical research as compared to basic research
Background: Citation analysis has become an important tool for research
performance assessment in the medical sciences. However, different areas of
medical research may have considerably different citation practices, even
within the same medical field. Because of this, it is unclear to what extent
citation-based bibliometric indicators allow for valid comparisons between
research units active in different areas of medical research.
Methodology: A visualization methodology is introduced that reveals
differences in citation practices between medical research areas. The
methodology extracts terms from the titles and abstracts of a large collection
of publications and uses these terms to visualize the structure of a medical
field and to indicate how research areas within this field differ from each
other in their average citation impact.
Results: Visualizations are provided for 32 medical fields, defined based on
journal subject categories in the Web of Science database. The analysis focuses
on three fields. In each of these fields, there turn out to be large
differences in citation practices between research areas. Low-impact research
areas tend to focus on clinical intervention research, while high-impact
research areas are often more oriented on basic and diagnostic research.
Conclusions: Popular bibliometric indicators, such as the h-index and the
impact factor, do not correct for differences in citation practices between
medical fields. These indicators therefore cannot be used to make accurate
between-field comparisons. More sophisticated bibliometric indicators do
correct for field differences but still fail to take into account within-field
heterogeneity in citation practices. As a consequence, the citation impact of
clinical intervention research may be substantially underestimated in
comparison with basic and diagnostic research
The Hardness-Intensity Diagram of Cygnus X-3: Revisiting the Radio/X-Ray States
Cygnus X-3 is one of the brightest X-ray and radio sources in the Galaxy, and
is well known for its erratic behaviour in X-rays as well as in the radio,
occasionally producing major radio flares associated with relativistic
ejections. However, even after many years of observations in various wavelength
bands Cyg X-3 still eludes clear physical understanding. Studying different
emission bands simultaneously in microquasars has proved to be a fruitful
approach towards understanding these systems, especially by shedding light on
the accretion disc/jet connection. We continue this legacy by constructing a
hardness-intensity diagram (HID) from archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data
and linking simultaneous radio observations to it. We find that surprisingly
Cyg X-3 sketches a similar shape in the HID to that seen in other transient
black hole X-ray binaries during outburst but with distinct differences.
Together with the results of this analysis and previous studies of Cyg X-3 we
conclude that the X-ray states can be assigned to six distinct states. This
categorization relies heavily on the simultaneous radio observations and we
identify one new X-ray state, the hypersoft state, similar to the ultrasoft
state, which is associated to the quenched radio state during which there is no
or very faint radio emission. Recent observations of GeV flux observed from Cyg
X-3 (Tavani et al. 2009; Fermi LAT Collaboration et al. 2009) during a soft
X-ray and/or radio quenched state at the onset of a major radio flare hint that
a very energetic process is at work during this time, which is also when the
hypersoft X-ray state is observed. In addition, Cyg X-3 shows flaring with a

Complications of peripheral arteriography:A new system to identify patients at increased risk
AbstractPurpose: The most quoted literature on arteriographic complications is based on self-reports collected during the mid 1970s. We sought to determine whether those results remain valid despite changes in arteriographic practice and whether patient subgroups at increased risk could be identified.Methods: Five hundred forty-nine consecutive patients were examined after arteriography and twice over 72 hours. Patients were telephoned at least 2 weeks later to identify delayed complications. The sample was divided into two groups to allow independent validation of suspected prognostic factors.Results: The rate of major complications was 2.9% (16/549), but varied from 0.7% to 9.1% among three strata of relative risk. Rates were highest in patients studied for suspected aortic dissection, mesenteric ischemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, or symptomatic carotid artery stenosis and lowest in patients with trauma or aneurysmal disease. Patients studied for claudication or limb-threatening ischemia had intermediate risk (2.0%). Within these strata, congestive heart failure and furosemide use were the only variables independently associated with a significantly increased complication rate.Conclusions: Previous reports have overestimated the risk of arteriography for trauma or aneurysm but substantially underestimate the risk for patients with other common conditions. Such stratified complication rates are essential to understand relative costs and benefits of arteriography and other vascular imaging modalities in specific clinical situations. The Leiden Ranking 2011/2012: Data collection, indicators, and interpretation
The Leiden Ranking 2011/2012 is a ranking of universities based on
bibliometric indicators of publication output, citation impact, and scientific
collaboration. The ranking includes 500 major universities from 41 different
countries. This paper provides an extensive discussion of the Leiden Ranking
2011/2012. The ranking is compared with other global university rankings, in
particular the Academic Ranking of World Universities (commonly known as the
Shanghai Ranking) and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Also, a detailed description is offered of the data collection methodology of
the Leiden Ranking 2011/2012 and of the indicators used in the ranking. Various
innovations in the Leiden Ranking 2011/2012 are presented. These innovations
include (1) an indicator based on counting a university's highly cited
publications, (2) indicators based on fractional rather than full counting of
collaborative publications, (3) the possibility of excluding non-English
language publications, and (4) the use of stability intervals. Finally, some
comments are made on the interpretation of the ranking, and a number of
limitations of the ranking are pointed out
A recursive field-normalized bibliometric performance indicator: An application to the field of library and information science
Two commonly used ideas in the development of citation-based research
performance indicators are the idea of normalizing citation counts based on a
field classification scheme and the idea of recursive citation weighing (like
in PageRank-inspired indicators). We combine these two ideas in a single
indicator, referred to as the recursive mean normalized citation score
indicator, and we study the validity of this indicator. Our empirical analysis
shows that the proposed indicator is highly sensitive to the field
classification scheme that is used. The indicator also has a strong tendency to
reinforce biases caused by the classification scheme. Based on these
observations, we advise against the use of indicators in which the idea of
normalization based on a field classification scheme and the idea of recursive
citation weighing are combined
Disk-Jet Connection in Cygnus X-3
We present the results of a detailed correlation study between the soft
X-ray, hard X-ray, and radio emission (obtained from RXTE ASM, BATSE, and GBI
observations, respectively) of the bright radio emitting Galactic X-ray binary
Cygnus X-3. We detect a very strong positive correlation between the soft X-ray
and radio emission during the low-hard and minor flaring periods of the source,
and an anti-correlation between the soft and hard X-ray emissions. We present
statistical arguments to suggest that the anti-correlation between the radio
and hard X-ray emission, reported earlier, is primarily due to their
correlation and anti-correlation, respectively, with the soft X-ray emission.
We make a wide band X-ray spectral study using the pointed RXTE observations
and detect a pivotal behaviour in the X-ray spectrum. We argue that this X-ray
spectral pivoting is responsible for the anti-correlation between the soft and
hard X-ray emissions. The strong correlation between the soft X-ray and radio
emission suggests a close link between the accreting mechanism, plasma cloud

The very flat radio - millimetre spectrum of Cygnus X-1
We present almost-simultaneous detections of Cygnus X-1 in the radio and mm
regimes, obtained during the low/hard X-ray state. The source displays a flat
spectrum between 2 and 220 GHz, with a spectral index flatter than 0.15
(3sigma). There is no evidence for either a low- or high-frequency cut-off, but
in the mid-infrared (~30 microns) thermal emission from the OB-type companion
star becomes dominant. The integrated luminosity of this flat-spectrum emission
in quiescence is > 2 x 10^{31} erg/s (2 x 10^{24} W). Assuming the emission
originates in a jet for which non-radiative (e.g. adiabatic expansion) losses
dominate, this is a very conservative lower limit on the power required to
maintain the jet. A comparison with Cyg X-3 and GRS 1915+105, the other X-ray
binaries for which a flat spectrum at shorter than cm wavelengths has been
observed, shows that the jet in Cyg X-1 is significantly less luminous and less
variable, and is probably our best example to date of a continuous, steady,
outflow from an X-ray binary. The emissive mechanism reponsible for such a flat
spectral component remains uncertain. Specifically, we note that the radio-mm
spectra observed from these X-ray binaries are much flatter than those of the
`flat-spectrum' AGN, and that existing models of synchrotron emission from
partially self-absorbed radio cores, which predict a high-frequency cut-off in
the mm regime, are not directly applicable.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
