Efficient computation of option price sensitivities for options of American style

No front-office software can survive without providing derivatives of option prices with respect to underlying market or model parameters, the so called Greeks. If a closed form solution for an option exists, Greeks can be computed analytically and they are numerically stable. However, for American style options, there is no closed-form solution. The price is computed by binomial trees, finite difference methods or an analytic approximation. Taking derivatives of these prices leads to instable numerics or misleading results, specially for Greeks of higher order. We compare the computation of the Greeks in various pricing methods and conclude with the recommendation to use Leisen-Reimer trees. --American options,Greeks,Leisen-Reimer trees

Swiss Parks of National Importance as model regions of sustainable development – An economic success story for farmers?

Evidence on the socioeconomic effects of the protected area status of affected regions is mixed. While some studies highlight positive outcomes for these regions, others point in the opposite direction. Consequently, this study aimed to add to the discourse on whether protected area status fosters the socioeconomic development of these regions or not. The study focuses on the agricultural sector in protected areas, because this sector is of particular importance for local communes in these regions. Our study aimed to investigate whether the status Swiss Park of National Importance (henceforth park) positively or negatively influenced economic indicators of local farms (i.e., direct payments, income, and revenues). Specifically, the study answers the following question: How would economic farm indicators have developed if the territory had not gained park status? Thus, the study compared the economic indicators of farms located in a park with economic indicators of farms from neighboring regions outside the park. The analyses focused on the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve Entlebuch and the Nature Park Gantrisch as case study regions. The empirical findings revealed that gaining the park status had neither positive nor negative significant effects on income of farms inside a park compared to similar farms outside. However, results also showed that gaining the park status had positive rather than negative effects on further economic indicators such as direct payments and revenues

Movable Thin Glass Elements in Façades

Façades play an important role in the control of energy flow and energy consumption in buildings as they represent the interface between the outdoor environment and the indoor occupied space. The option of regulating internal and external conditions acquires great relevance in new approaches to sustainable building solutions. Studies on climate adaptive façades show a very high potential for improved indoor environmental quality conditions and energy savings by moveable façades. A number of movable façades were realized in the past, but the use of thin glass with a thickness of 0.5 mm to 3 mm opens a brand-new field, that allows for playing with the geometry of the outer skin and the opportunity to make it adaptive by movement. Thin glass requires for curved surfaces in order to gain structural stiffness in static use. In kinetic façades the high flexibility of thin glass allows for new options for changes in size and position by bending of elements rather than implementing hinges in a system of foldable rigid panels. The geometry is based on the known theory of developable surfaces for keeping a low stress-level during movement. This allows for façades created from cold bent thin glass or curved laminated safety glasses produced by laminating of thin glass plies which provide better sealing, greater simplicity in construction and robustness and durability of moveable components which may be actuated autonomously. Some concepts based on the before mentioned theories were created to explain some principles and discuss their principles and applicability

Korpora gesprochener Sprache und Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache: Eine chancenreiche Beziehung

In diesem Beitrag wird das Potenzial von Korpora der gesprochenen Sprache für die DaF/DaZ-Forschung und -Didaktik näher beschrieben. Besondere Berücksichtigung finden dabei die im Projekt ZuMult entwickelten Zugangswege zu mündlichen Korpora. Es werden drei Perspektiven eingenommen. Zunächst werden die aktuellen Einsatzmöglichkeiten von Korpora gesprochener Sprache für den Unterricht Deutsch als Fremdsprache und Deutsch als Zweitsprache vorgestellt. Im nächsten Schritt wird gezeigt, inwieweit Korpora als Grundlage für die Ermittlung von vermittlungsrelevanten Phänomenen in der gesprochenen Sprache genutzt werden können. Schließlich wird auf Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Analyse (fortgeschrittener) gesprochener Lerner/-innensprache auf der Grundlage von mündlichen Korpora eingegangen

ZUMAL: Zielgruppenspezifische Gesprächsauswahl aus Korpora gesprochener Sprache

ZuMal ist ein im Rahmen des Projekts ZuMult entwickeltes Werkzeug, welches eine Vorauswahl an Sprechereignissen aus den beiden Korpora FOLK und GeWiss nach sprachdidaktisch relevanten und schwierigkeitsbezogenen Kriterien ermöglicht. Hierfür werden zum einen Kriterien genutzt, die auf die Metadaten der Sprechereignisse zurückgehen (so etwa die Art des Gesprächs, bspw. Telefongespräch, Gespräch beim Arbeitsamt, Tischgespräch; die Gesprächsthemen, die Sprachregion und die Dauer). Zum anderen wird auf Informationen zurückgegriffen, die automatisiert aus den Daten gewonnen werden können und aus der Perspektive der Vermittlung des Deutschen als Fremd- und Zweitsprache mit besonderen Herausforderungen für Lerner:innen mit Deutsch als L2 assoziiert werden. Dazu gehören u.a. der Wortschatz und dessen Zugehörigkeit zu den Niveaustufen des gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens, die Standardnähe/-ferne, die Sprechgeschwindigkeit, die Anzahl an Überlappungen verschiedener Sprecher:innen sowie das Vorkommen ausgewählter Mündlichkeitsphänomene und Wortarten. Im Beitrag sollen die in ZuMal bereitgestellten Auswahlparameter näher beschrieben werden. Im Fokus stehen dabei insbesondere die sprachdidaktischen Konzepte, die den mit Schwierigkeit assoziierten Parametern zugrunde gelegt wurden. Anhand exemplarischer Auswertungen wird zudem gezeigt, welche Ausprägungen die aktuell in FOLK und GeWiss enthaltenen Daten im Hinblick auf die Auswahlparameter zeigen
