Mimicking the effect of prolactin on STAT3/STAT5 activity in breast cancer

Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) 3 and 5 are commonly constitutively activated in breast cancer. STAT5 can outcompete STAT3 and reduce cell proliferation and metastasis. STAT5 activation is stimulated by prolactin, a natural hormone that can be harmful at high levels. The aim of this study is to identify some possible previously developed drugs that mimic the effect of prolactin and STAT5 without the added risk in MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells. Using the CLUE database query app and STAT5 up- and downregulation signatures, three drugs (X, K, and M) were chosen based on their similarity in signatures to those of STAT5. These drugs were then analyzed for cell viability to determine dosage. qPCR was used to compare the expression of STAT5 target genes after drug treatment and the expression after STAT5 activation with prolactin. The drug K was found to show a similar impact on target gene expression to prolactin. Further research is required, but from this study K seems to be a promising option for stimulating STAT5 and improving breast cancer prognosis

Evaluating Resources for Cancer Caregivers on Cancer Hospital Websites

Background: Over the last 20 years, cancer care has transitioned from long hospitalizations to short inpatient stays or outpatient settings. As patients and their family members increasingly turn to the Internet for health information, cancer hospitals have the opportunity to provide clear, credible information on their websites to cancer patients, families, and informal caregivers. Objective: Recommend improved web content and organization of caregiver information for patients and families at our local comprehensive cancer center. Methods: One librarian and two library science students conducted a cognitive walk-through to assess websites of two cancer hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Each evaluator independently performed seven tasks distributed among three different caregiver personas to evaluate the presence and accessibility of caregiver information on these cancer hospital websites. Results: Our findings indicate that these websites are not conducive to providing information for cancer caregiver support because of the following: key information is unavailable, navigation on the landing page is limited, broken links, ambiguous page titles, page titles that do not match the content of the page, and lack of contact information (phone number, email) for service access. Conclusion: Opportunities are available to improve cancer caregiver information on cancer hospital websites. Library professionals can help cancer hospitals improve caregiver information on their websites with recommendations for additional content and clearer organization. This is a way to build partnerships between library professionals and cancer hospitals

Innovating Cultural Competence Education for Nurses

Objective To improve cultural competency levels of registered nurses on the Mother/Baby unit by educating nurses. Background Demographics are shifting in the U.S. with an increase in minority populations. Research has revealed insufficient education or a complete absence of education, resulting in nurses that are not equipped to adequately care for culturally diverse patients. Methods The Evidence-Based Practice Improvement (EBPI) Model guided the development and implementation of the project. A cultural competence education module was developed utilizing resources from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Outcomes were measured using a pretest/posttest design tool, the Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals- Revised (IAPCC-R) to assess cultural competency levels. Results A paired sample t-test was used to determine if there was a significant change between pretest and posttest scores in 14 participants. Scores significantly increased (p=0.002) from 73.57 at pretest to 81.64 at posttest. Items were summed to create subscales scores for awareness, desire, skill, knowledge and encounters. Scores significantly increased for all constructs, though knowledge did not significantly increase. Conclusion Cultural competence education increased the overall cultural competency levels of registered nurses on the Mother/Baby unit. Implication for Nurses Culturally competent education has been associated with improved awareness, desire, skill and encounters, which in turn supports patient-centered care

    Anatomska rekonstrukcija prednjeg križnog ligamenta

Tears of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are one of the most common injuries to active individuals. The history of reconstructing a ruptured ACL has undergone many advances from open, extra-articular reconstructions, to modern day advanced arthroscopic techniques. Some of these new arthroscopic techniques use small incisions and standardized instruments reducing the surgical time, however, they fail to restore the native ACL anatomy. Recent studies have shown that non-anatomical reconstruction might result in suboptimal clinical outcomes. As a result, anatomic ACL reconstruction has gained popularity. The cornerstone of anatomic ACL reconstruction is the functional restoration of the ACL to its native dimensions, collagen orientation, and insertion sites. This article is meant to provide the most up-to-date literature review regarding anatomic ACL reconstruction. Cilj anatomske rekonstrukcije jest rekonstukcija prirodne duljine i promjera PKL-a, orijetnacije kolagenih vlakana i anatomskih hvatišta. U ovom radu dajemo pregled najnovije literature koja se bavi anatomskom rekonstrukcijom PKL-a
