Symmetry of the order parameter in superconducting ZrZn_2
We apply symmetry considerations to study the possible superconducting order
parameters in ferromagnetic ZrZn_2. We predict that the presence and the
location of the superconducting gap nodes depend on the direction of
magnetization M. In particular, if M is directed along the z axis, then the
order parameter should always have zeros. We also discuss how to determine the

Oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, thrombophilias and risk of venous thromboembolism: a systematic review The Thrombosis: Risk and Economic Assessment of Thrombophilia Screening (TREATS) Study
Combined oral contraceptives,oral hormone replacement therapy and thrombophilias are recognised risk factors for venous thromboembolism in women.The objective of this study was to assess the risk of thromboembolism among women with thrombophilia who are taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, conducting a systematic review and metaanalysis. Of 201 studies identified, only nine met the inclusion criteria. Seven studies included pre-menopausal women on oral contraceptives and two studies included peri-menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy. For oral contraceptive use, significant associations of the risk of venous thromboembolism were found in women with factor V Leiden (OR 15.62; 95%CI 8.66 to 28.15); deficiencies of antithrombin (OR 12.60; 95%CI 1.37 to 115.79), protein C (OR 6.33; 95%CI 1.68 to 23.87), or protein S (OR 4.88; 95%CI 1.39 to 17.10), elevated levels of factor VIIIc (OR 8.80; 95%CI 4.13 to 18.75); and factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A (OR 7.85; 95%CI 1.65 to 37.41). For hormone replacement therapy, a significant association was found in women with factor V Leiden (OR 13.16; 95%CI 4.28 to 40.47).Although limited by the small number of studies, the findings of this study support the presence of interaction between thrombophilia and venous thromboembolism among women taking oral contraceptives. However, further studies are required to establish with greater confidence the associations of these, and other, thrombophilias with venous thromboembolism among hormone users
Order parameter symmetry in ferromagnetic superconductors
We analyze the symmetry and the nodal structure of the superconducting order
parameter in a cubic ferromagnet, such as ZrZn. We demonstrate how the
order parameter symmetry evolves when the electromagnetic interaction of the
conduction electrons with the internal magnetic induction and the spin-orbit
coupling are taken into account. These interactions break the cubic symmetry
and lift the degeneracy of the order parameter. It is shown that the order
parameter which appears immediately below the critical temperature has two
components, and its symmetry is described by {\em co-representations} of the
magnetic point groups. This allows us to make predictions about the location of

Schroedinger cat-like states by conditional measurements on a beam-splitter
A scheme for generating Schr\"{o}dinger cat-like states of a single-mode
optical field by means of conditional measurement is proposed. Feeding into a
beam splitter a squeezed vacuum and counting the photons in one of the output
channels, the conditional states in the other output channel exhibit a number
of properties that are very similar to those of superpositions of two coherent
states with opposite phases. We present analytical and numerical results for
the photon-number and quadrature-component distributions of the conditional
states and their Wigner and Husimi functions. Further, we discuss the effect of

Possible symmetries of the superconducting order parameter in a hexagonal ferromagnet
We study the order parameter symmetry in a hexagonal crystal with co-existing
superconductivity and ferromagnetism. An experimental example is provided by
carbon-based materials, such as graphite-sulfur composites, in which an
evidence of such co-existence has been recently discovered. The presence of a
non-zero magnetization in the normal phase brings about considerable changes in
the symmetry classification of superconducting states, compared to the

Pion emission in 2H, 12C, 27Al, gamma pi+ reactions at threshold
The first data from MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden on pion production in
photonuclear reactions at threshold energies, is presented. The decrease of the
total yield of pi+ in gamma + 12C, 27Al reactions below 200 MeV as well as
differential, dsigma/dOmega, cross sections follow essentially predictions from
an intranuclear cascade model with an attractive potential for pion-nucleus
interaction in its simplest form. Double differential, d2sigma/dOmegadT, cross
sections at 176 MeV show, however, deviations from the model, which call for
refinements of nuclear and Coulomb potentials and possibly also for coherent
pion production mechanisms.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional Lieb lattice with spin-orbit coupling
We study exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional Lieb lattice of micropillars. The energy spectrum of the system features two flat bands formed from and photonic orbitals, into which we trigger bosonic condensation under high power excitation. The symmetry of the orbital wave functions combined with photonic spin-orbit coupling gives rise to emission patterns with pseudospin texture in the flat band condensates. Our work shows the potential of polariton lattices for emulating flat band Hamiltonians with spin-orbit coupling, orbital degrees of freedom and interactions
Inclusive meson production in peripheral collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions
There exist several proposals to use Weizs\"{a}cker-Williams photons
generated by ultrarelativistic heavy ions to produce exotic particles in
fusion reactions. To estimate the background conditions for such
reactions we analyze various mechanisms of meson production in very peripheral
collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions at RHIC and LHC energies. Besides
fusion they include also electromagnetic interactions
and strong nucleon-nucleon interactions in grazing collisions. All these
processes are characterised by low multiplicities of produced particles.
and events are simulated by corresponding Monte Carlo codes,
RELDIS and FRITIOF. In each of these processes a certain fraction of pions is
produced close to the mid-rapidity region that gives a background for the
events. The possibility of selecting mesons produced in
fusion events via different cut procedures is

Polarization-resolved strong light–matter coupling in planar GaAs/AlGaAs waveguides
We study the influence of optical selection rules and polarization splittings on properties of exciton polaritons in a planar AlGaAs waveguide containing embedded GaAs quantum wells. We demonstrate that transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes couple differently with light- and heavy-hole quantum well excitons, which leads to distinct polarization splittings of the resulting polariton modes. The experimental data are in good agreement with modeling based on theoretical data for the optical selection rules for quantum well excitons
