    Community Voices—A Leadership Program Making a Difference in Rural Underserved Counties in North Carolina

    Leadership is critically important to rural communities. The study reported here compared the leadership practices of leaders who are graduates of Community Voices Leadership Development for Community Decision Making (CV), a leadership program, to leaders who did not participate in the program. A telephone survey, which included questions from a modified version of the Leadership Practices Inventory (Kouzes & Posner, 1993), was used to collect the data. The study provides evidence that the CV program implemented in rural underserved counties in North Carolina is making a difference in the practices of rural leaders who have undergone the training

    Modelling mechanically dominated vasculature development

    Vascular networks play a key role in the development, function, and survival of many organisms, facilitating transport of nutrients and other critical factors within and between systems. The development of these vessel networks has been thoroughly explored in a variety of in vivo, in vitro and in silico contexts. However, the role of interactions between the growing vasculature and its environment remains largely unresolved, particularly concerning mechanical effects. Motivated by this gap in understanding, we develop a computational framework that is tailored to exploring the role of the mechanical environment on the formation of vascular networks. Here, we describe, document, implement, and explore an agent-based modelling framework, resolving the growth of individual vessels and seeking to capture phenomenology and intuitive qualitative mechanisms. In our explorations, we demonstrate that such a model can successfully reproduce familiar network structures, whilst highlighting the roles that mechanical influences could play in vascular development. For instance, we illustrate how an external substrate could act as an effective shared memory for the periodic regrowth of vasculature. We also observe the emergence of a nuanced collective behaviour and clustered vessel growth, which results from mechanical characteristics of the external environment

    Measuring the Black Hole Spin in Sgr A*

    The polarized mm/sub-mm radiation from Sgr A* is apparently produced by a Keplerian structure whose peak emission occurs within several Schwarzschild radii (r_S=2GM/c^2) of the black hole. The Chandra X-ray counterpart, if confirmed, is presumably the self-Comptonized component from this region. In this paper, we suggest that sub-mm timing observations could yield a signal corresponding to the period P_0 of the marginally stable orbit, and therefore point directly to the black hole's spin a. Sgr A*'s mass is now known to be (2.6\pm 0.2)\times 10^6 M_\odot (an unusually accurate value for supermassive black hole candidates), for which 2.7 min<P_0<36 min, depending on the value of a and whether the Keplerian flow is prograde or retrograde. A Schwarzschild black hole (a=0) should have P_0 ~ 20 min. The identification of the orbital frequency with the innermost stable circular orbit is made feasible by the transition from optically thick to thin emission at sub-mm wavelengths. With stratification in the emitter, the peak of the sub-mm bump in Sgr A*'s spectrum is thus produced at the smallest radius. We caution, however, that theoretical uncertainties in the structure of the emission region may still produce some ambiguity in the timing signal. Given that Sgr A*'s flux at ν∼1\nu\sim 1 mm is several Jy, these periods should lie within the temporal-resolving capability of sub-mm telescopes using bolometric detectors. A determination of P_0 should provide not only a value of a, but it should also define the angular momentum vector of the orbiting gas in relation to the black hole's spin axis. In addition, since the X-ray flux detected by Chandra appears to be the self-Comptonized mm to sub-mm component, these temporal fluctuations may also be evident in the X-ray signal.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figures.     Phonetic and sequential differences of other-repetitions in repair initiation

    This paper analyses two different repair initiation practices which both utilise other-repetition. We call these framing and prefacing other-repetitions, and show that they are treated as making different claims about the speakers’ depth of understanding of the prior talk. Framing repetitions repeat the turn-initial components of the prior turn with a particular ‘long and flat’ phonetic pattern; prefacing repetitions consist of a minimal repetition of the final grammatical structures of the prior speaker’s talk, produced quietly and with a falling intonation contour. Whilst framing repetitions are treated as displays of either a hearing or simple understanding problem, prefacing repetitions claim a more serious breakdown of understanding.     Altered chemomechanical coupling causes impaired motility of the kinesin-4 motors KIF27 and KIF7.

    Kinesin-4 motors play important roles in cell division, microtubule organization, and signaling. Understanding how motors perform their functions requires an understanding of their mechanochemical and motility properties. We demonstrate that KIF27 can influence microtubule dynamics, suggesting a conserved function in microtubule organization across the kinesin-4 family. However, kinesin-4 motors display dramatically different motility characteristics: KIF4 and KIF21 motors are fast and processive, KIF7 and its Drosophila melanogaster homologue Costal2 (Cos2) are immotile, and KIF27 is slow and processive. Neither KIF7 nor KIF27 can cooperate for fast processive transport when working in teams. The mechanistic basis of immotile KIF7 behavior arises from an inability to release adenosine diphosphate in response to microtubule binding, whereas slow processive KIF27 behavior arises from a slow adenosine triphosphatase rate and a high affinity for both adenosine triphosphate and microtubules. We suggest that evolutionarily selected sequence differences enable immotile KIF7 and Cos2 motors to function not as transporters but as microtubule-based tethers of signaling complexes

    Learning the Fuzzy Phases of Small Photonic Condensates

    Phase transitions, being the ultimate manifestation of collective behaviour, are typically features of many-particle systems only. Here, we describe the experimental observation of collective behaviour in small photonic condensates made up of only a few photons. Moreover, a wide range of both equilibrium and non-equilibrium regimes, including Bose-Einstein condensation or laser-like emission are identified. However, the small photon number and the presence of large relative fluctuations places major difficulties in identifying different phases and phase transitions. We overcome this limitation by employing unsupervised learning and fuzzy clustering algorithms to systematically construct the fuzzy phase diagram of our small photonic condensate. Our results thus demonstrate the rich and complex phase structure of even small collections of photons, making them an ideal platform to investigate equilibrium and non-equilibrium physics at the few particle level

    Linear Growth through 12 Years is Weakly but Consistently Associated with Language and Math Achievement Scores at Age 12 Years in 4 Low- or Middle-Income Countries.

    BackgroundWhether linear growth through age 12 y is associated with language and math achievement at age 12 y remains unclear.ObjectiveOur objective was to investigate associations of linear growth through age 12 y with reading skill, receptive vocabulary, and mathematics performance at age 12 y in 4 low- or middle-income countries (LMICs).MethodsWe analyzed data from the Young Lives Younger Cohort study in Ethiopia (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;1275), India (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;1350), Peru (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;1402), and Vietnam (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;1594). Age 1, 5, 8, and 12 y height-for-age z scores (HAZ) were calculated. Language and math achievement at age 12 y was assessed with the use of country-specific adaptations of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, the Early Grades Reading Assessment, and a mathematics test; all test scores were standardized by age within country. We used path analysis to examine associations of HAZ with achievement scores. Twelve models were examined at each age (3 tests across 4 countries).ResultsMean HAZ in each country was &lt;-1.00 at all ages. Overall, linear growth through age 12 y was associated with 0.4-3.4% of the variance in achievement scores. HAZ at 1 y was positively and significantly associated with the test score in 11 of the 12 models. This association was significantly mediated through HAZ at 5, 8, and 12 y in 9 of the models. HAZ at 5, 8, and 12 y was positively and significantly associated with test scores in 8, 8, and 6 models, respectively. These associations were mediated through HAZ at older ages in 6 of the HAZ at 5-y models and in 6 of the HAZ at 8-y models.ConclusionChild relative linear growth between ages 1 and 12 y was weakly but consistently associated with language and math achievement at age 12 y in 4 LMICs
