    Microwave Photoelasticity: A Resonant Wavelength Approach Applied to PEEK Polymer

    Every nondestructive testing (NDT) technique has its unique set of advantages and limitations. Currently, the only existing noncontact NDT method capable of measuring sub-surface stresses, in optically opaque materials, at near-real-time speeds and over large areas is Microwave Photoelasticity (MP). This paper presents a new MP approach, which correlates changes in resonant wavelengths to changes in stress. In addition to a theoretical outline of the approach, the design and operation of an instrument capable of conducting these measurements is described. Finally, the technique is demonstrated by conducting measurements on polyetheretherketone, commonly known as PEEK, polymer. Between the W-Band frequencies of 105 to 115 GHz, PEEKs stress-optic-coefficient was determined to be of = 0.20 0.02 1/GPa

    Effects of Field Applied Residues and Length of Exposure to Tebufenozide on the Obliquebanded Leafroller (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

    Studies were conducted with the obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and tebufenozide to determine the influence of various factors on the efficacy of this insecticide under field conditions. Larvae were exposed to apple foliage collected from commercial orchards at different intervals after insecticide applications. Mortality of neonates on actively growing (terminal) and mature (spur) foliage 10 d after an airblast sprayer application of tebufenozide was 0 and 35-74%, respectively. Feeding by larvae was also assessed on collected foliage. There was significantly less feeding on tebufenozide-treated foliage than chlorpyrifos- and nontreated foliage (P 90%. In the third study, to examine the effects of obliquebanded leafroller movement to foliage with sublethal residues, we designed a laboratory bioassay in which larvae were exposed to foliage treated with tebufenozide and transferred to untreated foliage after various exposure intervals. The higher the concentration of tebufenozide, the less exposure time was necessary to cause high levels of mortality of neonates.     The paper presents the architecture of a wideband reconfigurable harmonically-tuned Gallium Nitrate (GaN) Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) for cognitive radios. When interfaced with the physical layer of a cognitive communication system, this amplifier topology offers broadband high efficiency through the use of multiple tuned input/output matching networks. This feature enables the cognitive radio to reconfigure the operating frequency without sacrificing efficiency. This paper additionally presents as a proof-of-concept the design, fabrication, and test results for a GaN inverse class-F type amplifier operating at X-band (8.4 GHz) that achieves a maximum output power of 5.14-W, Power Added Efficiency (PAE) of 38.6, and Drain Efficiency (DE) of 48.9 under continuous wave (CW) operation

    Reconfigurable Wideband Circularly Polarized Stacked Square Patch Antenna for Cognitive Radios

    An almost square patch, a square patch and a stacked square patch with corner truncation for circular polarization (CP) are researched and developed at X-band for cognitive radios. Experimental results indicate, first, that the impedance bandwidth of a CP almost square patch fed from the edge by a 50 ohm line is 1.70% and second, that of a CP square patch fed from the ground plane side by a surface launch connector is 1.87%. Third, the impedance bandwidth of a CP stacked square patch fed by a surface launch connector is 2.22%. The measured center frequency for the CP square patch fed by a surface launch connector without and with an identical stacked patch is 8.45 and 8.1017 GHz, respectively. By stacking a patch, separated by a fixed air gap of 0.254 mm, the center frequency is observed to shift by as much as 348.3 MHz. The shift in center frequency, brought about by the reconfiguring of the physical layer antenna, can be exploited in a cognitive system since it expands the usable frequency spectrum for software reconfiguration in the presence of interference. In addition, varying the fixed air gap in the stacked antenna geometry by increments of 0.254 mm further expands the usable frequency spectrum

    Contributions of temporal encodings of voicing, voicelessness, fundamental frequency, and amplitude variation to audiovisual and auditory speech perception

    Auditory and audio-visual speech perception was investigated using auditory signals of invariant spectral envelope that temporally encoded the presence of voiced and voiceless excitation, variations in amplitude envelope and F-0. In experiment 1, the contribution of the timing of voicing was compared in consonant identification to the additional effects of variations in F-0 and the amplitude of voiced speech. In audio-visual conditions only, amplitude variation slightly increased accuracy globally and for manner features. F-0 variation slightly increased overall accuracy and manner perception in auditory and audio-visual conditions. Experiment 2 examined consonant information derived from the presence and amplitude variation of voiceless speech in addition to that from voicing, F-0, and voiced speech amplitude. Binary indication of voiceless excitation improved accuracy overall and for voicing and manner. The amplitude variation of voiceless speech produced only a small increment in place of articulation scores. A final experiment examined audio-visual sentence perception using encodings of voiceless excitation and amplitude variation added to a signal representing voicing and F-0. There was a contribution of amplitude variation to sentence perception, but not of voiceless excitation. The timing of voiced and voiceless excitation appears to be the major temporal cues to consonant identity. (C) 1999 Acoustical Society of America. [S0001-4966(99)01410-1]

    High Variability of Acetabular Offset in Primary Hip Osteoarthritis Influences Acetabular Reaming—A Computed Tomography–Based Anatomic Study

    Background: The objectives of the present study were to (1) evaluate the accuracy and reliability of native acetabular offset (AO) measurements performed on conventional supine anterior-posterior (ap) pelvis radiographs with reference to computed tomography (CT) in patients with end-stage hip osteoarthritis (OA); (2) determine the minimum and maximum amount of medialization of the center of rotation (COR) simulating different reaming techniques; and (3) identify patients at increased risk of excessive medialization of the COR.Methods: A consecutive series of corresponding 131 CT scans and radiographs of patients with primary hip OA was evaluated using validated software for three-dimensional acetabular and femoral measurements. We simulated the implantation of a hemispherical press-fit cup comparing anatomic and conventional reaming techniques and assessed corresponding changes in AO.Results: Standardized ap pelvis radiographs allowed for an accurate and reliable assessment of AO compared with CT. Cup placement in the most lateral position (anatomic reaming technique) resulted in a mean implant-related medialization of 5.9 ± 3.4 mm. Anatomic cup placement did not require reaming to the true floor in 64 hips (49%). With the conventional reaming technique, the total medialization of the COR (implant-related and reaming-related) was 6.8 ± 2.9, with 34% of cases having a medialization ≥8 mm.Conclusion: The present study highlights the variability of acetabular anatomy in patients with primary OA. AO can be accurately and reliably determined on conventional radiographs and appears to be independent of femoral shape and geometry. Depending on the preferred reaming technique a substantial number of patients appear at risk for excessive cup medialization

    Helicobacter pylori, persistent infection burden and structural brain imaging markers

    Persistent infections, whether viral, bacterial or parasitic, including Helicobacter pylori infection, have been implicated in non-communicable diseases, including dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. In this cross-sectional study, data on 635 cognitively normal participants from the UK Biobank study (2006–21, age range: 40–70 years) were used to examine whether H. pylori seropositivity (e.g. presence of antibodies), serointensities of five H. pylori antigens and a measure of total persistent infection burden were associated with selected brain volumetric structural MRI (total, white, grey matter, frontal grey matter (left/right), white matter hyperintensity as percent intracranial volume and bi-lateral sub-cortical volumes) and diffusion-weighted MRI measures (global and tract-specific bi-lateral fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity), after an average 9–10 years of lag time. Persistent infection burden was calculated as a cumulative score of seropositivity for over 20 different pathogens. Multivariable-adjusted linear regression analyses were conducted, whereby selected potential confounders (all measures) and intracranial volume (sub-cortical volumes) were adjusted, with stratification by Alzheimer’s disease polygenic risk score tertile when exposures were H. pylori antigen serointensities. Type I error was adjusted to 0.007. We report little evidence of an association between H. pylori seropositivity and persistent infection burden with various volumetric outcomes (P > 0.007, from multivariable regression models), unlike previously reported in past research. However, H. pylori antigen serointensities, particularly immunoglobulin G against the vacuolating cytotoxin A, GroEL and outer membrane protein antigens, were associated with poorer tract-specific white matter integrity (P < 0.007), with outer membrane protein serointensity linked to worse outcomes in cognition-related tracts such as the external capsule, the anterior limb of the internal capsule and the cingulum, specifically at low Alzheimer’s disease polygenic risk. Vacuolating cytotoxin A serointensity was associated with greater white matter hyperintensity volume among individuals with mid-level Alzheimer’s disease polygenic risk, while among individuals with the highest Alzheimer’s disease polygenic risk, the urease serointensity was consistently associated with reduced bi-lateral caudate volumes and the vacuolating cytotoxin A serointensity was linked to reduced right putamen volume (P < 0.007). Outer membrane protein and urease were associated with larger sub-cortical volumes (e.g. left putamen and right nucleus accumbens) at middle Alzheimer’s disease polygenic risk levels (P < 0.007). Our results shed light on the relationship between H. pylori seropositivity, H. pylori antigen levels and persistent infection burden with brain volumetric structural measures. These data are important given the links between infectious agents and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, and can be used for the development of drugs and preventive interventions that would reduce the burden of those diseases
