Topology of the three-qubit space of entanglement types
The three-qubit space of entanglement types is the orbit space of the local
unitary action on the space of three-qubit pure states, and hence describes the
types of entanglement that a system of three qubits can achieve. We show that
this orbit space is homeomorphic to a certain subspace of R^6, which we
describe completely. We give a topologically based classification of
three-qubit entanglement types, and we argue that the nontrivial topology of
the three-qubit space of entanglement types forbids the existence of standard
states with the convenient properties of two-qubit standard states.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, v2 adds a referenc
Undetermined states: how to find them and their applications
We investigate the undetermined sets consisting of two-level, multi-partite
pure quantum states, whose reduced density matrices give absolutely no
information of their original states. Two approached of finding these quantum
states are proposed. One is to establish the relation between codewords of the
stabilizer quantum error correction codes (SQECCs) and the undetermined states.
The other is to study the local complementation rules of the graph states. As
an application, the undetermined states can be exploited in the quantum secret
sharing scheme. The security is guaranteed by their undetermineness.Comment: 6 pages, no figur
Corporate social responsibility: A unifying discourse for the Mining Industry?
The public perception of mining as an economic activity that generates harmful environmental impacts has generated both a corporate discourse of social responsibility (CSR) to legitimise mining activities and also anti-mining discourses. Both discourses use science to support their claims, yet they rarely agree on a scientific solution. The concept of discourse community may help us to understand the disconnect between mining companies and stakeholders. It is unclear whether the discourse of corporate social responsibility will improve understanding among stakeholders and lead to mutually acceptable resolutions to conflict
The Parts Determine the Whole except for n-Qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger States
The generalized n-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and their
local unitary equivalents are the only pure states of n qubits that are not
uniquely determined (among arbitrary states, pure or mixed) by their reduced
density matrices of n-1 qubits. Thus, the generalized GHZ states are the only
ones containing information at the n-party level.Comment: 4 page
Entanglement classes of symmetric Werner states
The symmetric Werner states for qubits, important in the study of quantum
nonlocality and useful for applications in quantum information, have a
surprisingly simple and elegant structure in terms of tensor products of Pauli
matrices. Further, each of these states forms a unique local unitary
equivalence class, that is, no two of these states are interconvertible by
local unitary operations.Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, additional references in version 2, revised

Gain in a quantum wire laser of high uniformity
A multi-quantum wire laser operating in the 1-D ground state has been
achieved in a very high uniformity structure that shows free exciton emission
with unprecedented narrow width and low lasing threshold. Under optical pumping
the spontaneous emission evolves from a sharp free exciton peak to a
red-shifted broad band. The lasing photon energy occurs about 5 meV below the
free exciton. The observed shift excludes free excitons in lasing and our
results show that Coulomb interactions in the 1-D electron-hole system shift
the spontaneous emission and play significant roles in laser gain.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, prepared by RevTe
Optical Properties of Deep Ice at the South Pole - Absorption
We discuss recent measurements of the wavelength-dependent absorption
coefficients in deep South Pole ice. The method uses transit time distributions
of pulses from a variable-frequency laser sent between emitters and receivers
embedded in the ice. At depths of 800 to 1000 m scattering is dominated by
residual air bubbles, whereas absorption occurs both in ice itself and in
insoluble impurities. The absorption coefficient increases approximately
exponentially with wavelength in the measured interval 410 to 610 nm. At the
shortest wavelength our value is about a factor 20 below previous values
obtained for laboratory ice and lake ice; with increasing wavelength the
discrepancy with previous measurements decreases. At around 415 to 500 nm the
experimental uncertainties are small enough for us to resolve an extrinsic
contribution to absorption in ice: submicron dust particles contribute by an
amount that increases with depth and corresponds well with the expected
increase seen near the Last Glacial Maximum in Vostok and Dome C ice cores. The
laser pulse method allows remote mapping of gross structure in dust
concentration as a function of depth in glacial ice.Comment: 26 pages, LaTex, Accepted for publication in Applied Optics. 9

Unintentional high density p-type modulation doping of a GaAs/AlAs core-multi-shell nanowire
Achieving significant doping in GaAs/AlAs core/shell nanowires (NWs) is of
considerable technological importance but remains a challenge due to the
amphoteric behavior of the dopant atoms. Here we show that placing a narrow
GaAs quantum well in the AlAs shell effectively getters residual carbon
acceptors leading to an \emph{unintentional} p-type doping. Magneto-optical
studies of such a GaAs/AlAs core multi-shell NW reveal quantum confined
emission. Theoretical calculations of NW electronic structure confirm quantum
confinement of carriers at the core/shell interface due to the presence of
ionized carbon acceptors in the 1~nm GaAs layer in the shell.
Micro-photoluminescence in high magnetic field shows a clear signature of
avoided crossings of the Landau level emission line with the Landau
level TO phonon replica. The coupling is caused by the resonant hole-phonon
interaction, which points to a large 2D hole density in the structure.Comment: just published in Nano Letters
