Dunia pendidikan sedang mengalami tantangan baru yang diakibatkan oleh wabah virus Covid-19, penyebaran penyakit COVID-19 yang menyerang Indonesia berdampak pada berbagai sektor, mulai dari kesehatan, ekonomi, hingga pendidikan (Ibrahim, 2020). Hal ini menyebabkan seluruh sistem pembelajaran di lembaga pendidikan tergeser ke metode pembelajaran online atau online. PENGAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS DENGAN PENDEKATAN ANTARBUDAYA MELALUI MEDIA FILM

Pendekatan antarbudaya sekarang ini cukup penting dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris terutama untuk siswa sebagai penutur asing bahasa Inggris (EFL). Tujuan dari pendekatan ini adalah untuk membuat siswa menjadi "manusia antarbudaya" (Byram et al, 2002). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif interpretative yang memotret penggunaan film sebagai media teks dalam pengajaran pembelajaran bahasa Inggris antarbudaya di Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UNSIKA. Kegiatan kelas didasarkan pada prinsip-prinsip pengajaran dan pebelajaran bahasa antarbudaya yang dari Liddicoat & Scarino (2013. Film yang disajikan untuk siswa didasarkan pada pertimbangan latar belakang dan pengaturan yang berkaitan dengan pendidikan. Observasi proses belajar mengajar dan wawancara dengan 30 siswa dilakukan untuk mendapatkan data. Hasilnya, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris antarbudaya dengan menggunakan media film memberi lebih banyak kesempatan bagi mahasiswa untuk lebih aktif dan kritis terhadap bahasa dan budaya lainnya. Mahasiswa juga sangat senang dengan film yang ditayangkan, selain ceritanya yang menarik, film tersebut juga memberikan nilai-nilai yang baik bagi mereka. Yang paling penting adalah bahwa mereka mengklaim bahwa mereka telah menjadi orang-orang antar budaya dan juga di masa depan

Analysis of Reading Interest of English Education of Students on Scientific Articles

This study aims to determine how interested students are in reading scientific articles in the English Education Department and to find out what factors make students interested in reading scientific articles in the English Education Department. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method. The results showed that the reading interest of English education students towards scientific articles was quite good. Reading interest arises from within students because of the demands of academics to achieve educational goals and ideals. The factors that make students interested in reading scientific articles are educational. The lecture material and the completion of final assignments require students to read many references to scientific articles. Then there is the motivation factor, where the motivation comes from the lecturer who always provides support so that students read more scientific articles to increase knowledge and insight and motivation from within because of the demands of lecture material or completion of final assignments to achieve their goals

Teacher's Experience About the Challenges of Teaching Speaking Online During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Challenge is a meaning of the problem that needs to be solved. This qualitative research aims to find out the challenges teachers face in teaching speaking online during the COVID-19 pandemic and how teachers deal with these challenges. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews. Three male and female English teachers from a public vocational high school in Karawang, Indonesia participated in this study. The analysis is carried out through thematic analysis to interpret the data that has been collected. The challenges faced by teachers while teaching speaking online during the covid-19 pandemic, findings reveal that teachers feel challenged by having to adapt to the use of media which will later be used as a tool. Regarding these challenges, the teacher admits that students are less active in speaking in online classes. To overcome this problem, the teacher will give assignments for vocabulary pronunciation so that students have more vocabulary so that students are more confident in speaking. This research is expected to increase awareness of the importance of the teacher's role in addressing the challenges that occur in teaching speaking online in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning English

Students’ Coping Strategies with Speaking Anxiety in Online Learning Setting

Anxiety is popular topic to discuss. Yet, studies focusing on situations which lead students to feel anxious in online EFL speaking classroom remain scarce. Therefore, this study is aimed to: (1) figure out situation causing students’ anxiety in an EFL speaking classroom; and (2) find out strategies that students use to cope with speaking anxiety. Nine second-year high school students were interviewed to explore the issue. The interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. The result indicated several situations in which students feel anxious when speaking English. These included: speaking in front of big and formal audience, worry of being misunderstood, lack of confidence, and worry of being asked all of sudden. Furthermore, students also used similar strategies to research finding by Kondo & Ying-Ling (2004) even speaking class during online learning setting. There were three strategies mainly used by the students, i.e. preparation, relaxation and positive thinking

Parents' Roles and Perceptions Towards their Children in Online English Learning

This research aims to investigate parents’ roles and perceptions towards their children in online English learning during covid-19. The data from six participants of the parents from Junior High School  were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The result showed that parents' roles in helping their children in online English learning during covid- 19 including parents as teacher, parents as facilitator, parents as motivator and parents as directors. Regarding parents' perception of children's English learning viewed from their experiences and challenges, parents showed negative and positive perceptions. In addition, some of the challenges of parents in accompanying children to learn English online, namely parents have limited time, lack of understanding learning materials and the unwillingness of children to follow English learning

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS MOBILITY PROGRAM: EXPERIENCES OF INDONESIAN STUDENTS

Learning is an activity that can be done anywhere and at any time as long as we have the desire to learn. Many people now travel abroad solely to learn. In this experience, exchange student found challenging on the cultural difference. This study aim to investigated Indonesian students' experience during the student mobility program abroad. Narrative inquiry was implemented to explore the experiences of two students by utilizing oral narratives by means of semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that Indonesian students find it challenging talk to middle-aged people. The Effectiveness of Picture And Picture Method On Secondary Students’ Reading Comprehension In Procedure Text

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui bagaimana keefektifan penggunaan metode Picture and Picture pada membaca pemahaman teks prosedur siswa. (2) mengetahui tanggapan siswa tentang metode Picture and Picture dalam pembelajaran membaca pemahaman teks prosedur. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan metode pre-experimental menggunakan one group pretest-posttest design.  Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 3 Karawang Barat dengan mengambil kelas VIII K sebagai sampel penelitian yang berjumlah 35 siswa. Ada tiga tahapan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu: pre-test, treatment, dan post-test beserta angket. Hasil temuan menunjukkan nilai rata-rata pre-test ke post-test kelas eksperimen (dari 43,40 ke 89,71). Analisis penelitian menggunakan uji t sampel berpasangan. Besarnya peningkatan hasil penelitian dihitung dengan menggunakan uji N-Gain Score diperoleh 0,80 atau 80% dengan kriteria tinggi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode Picture and Picture berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks prosedur siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 3 Karawang Barat dengan hasil perhitungan nilai signifikansi (Sig. 2 tailed) pada taraf sebesar (=0,000) < ? (0,05). Respon siswa mengenai penggunaan metode Picture and Picture dalam pembelajaran membaca pemahaman teks prosedur sudah baik pada sepuluh pernyataan angket, hasilnya terlihat dari rata-rata jumlah siswa yang menjawab angket dengan pendapat sangat baik dan baik adalah 60%. Kesimpulan yang diperoleh adalah terdapat peningkatan hasil belajar siswa yang menggunakan metode Picture and Picture pada membaca pemahaman teks prosedur

Exploring Students’ Speaking Anxiety Factors in an Online EFL Classroom

Due to pandemic covid-19, the learning setting has changed from face-to-face to an online learning environment to prevent the further spread of infection. This change mostly affected the state of psychological, specifically anxiety issues.  Specific anxiety called Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) appears as anxiety affiliates with foreign language learning. Despite foreign language anxiety is evidenced to be hinder students’ achievements, there are only a few studies that have explored FLA in an online setting. Therefore, by using a case study, this research paper tried to investigate the factors of speaking anxiety of 5 students from different anxiety levels. These students were selected from a total of 30 students using the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), which later be interviewed and asked to write a reflective journal. The result showed that some sources of each categorical factor (communication apprehension, test anxiety, fear of negative evaluation) can be classified as inter-lingual or intra-lingual factors. Moreover, some sources of factors have developed to new manifestations due to learning setting’ shifting. Additionally, as a part of communication apprehension, teachers’ bad teaching habits appeared as the most common factor to arise students’ speaking anxiety. Therefore, this study suggests teachers to evaluate their teaching habits, to reduce the influence of bad teaching habits on the students’ speaking anxiety

KESULITAN-KESULITAN YANG DIHADAPI MAHASISWA PIAUD DALAM PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan investigasi terhadap kesulitan-kesulitan yang dihadapi mahasiswa PIAUD dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Design yang digunakan adalah kualitatif. Hasil dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa S1 Prodi PIAUD menemukan kesulitan-kesulitan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Kesulitan tersebut disebabkan oleh faktor kompetensi dan ketidaksiapan mahasiswa serta disebabkan pula oleh kondisi mahasiswa yang masih memiliki kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang sangat kurang, seperti: kurangnya penguasaan grammar, kosakata, dan pengucapan kata. Dari penelitian ini diharapkan agar mahasiswa dapat meningkatkan keterampilan dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris
