    Finite element approximation of multi-scale elliptic problems using patches of elements

    In this paper we present a method for the numerical solution of elliptic problems with multi-scale data using multiple levels of not necessarily nested grids. The method consists in calculating successive corrections to the solution in patches whose discretizations are not necessarily conforming. This paper provides proofs of the results published earlier (see C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 337 (2003) 679-684), gives a generalization of the latter to more than two domains and contains extensive numerical illustrations.     Exchange interaction effects in the thermodynamic properties of quantum dots

    We study electron-electron interaction effects in the thermodynamic properties of quantum-dot systems. We obtain the direct and exchange contributions to the specific heat C_v in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation at finite temperatures. An exchange-induced phase transition is observed and the transition temperature is shown to be inversely proportional to the size of the system. The exchange contribution to C_v dominates over the direct and kinetic contributions in the intermediate regime of interaction strength (r_s ~ 1). Furthermore, the electron-electron interaction modifies both the amplitude and the period of magnetic field induced oscillations in C_v.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Developing research skills for the future workplace through interdisciplinary near-peer mentoring

    Experiential learning is touted as an effective way of imparting research skills. This suggests that master’s students undergoing training in research psychology should be exposed to managing projects and supervising interdisciplinary research teams and projects before entering the workplace. The Department of Psychology and Department of Town and Regional Planning at a South African university developed a near-peer mentoring programme in which the psychology master’s students mentored undergraduate urban planning students who were writing their final-year research reports. Focus group discussions with the psychology students about their experiences of the programme were analysed using phenomenography. The psychology students experienced their role as mentor in five hierarchical variations. The first four were seen as challenging, while the benefits were only experienced at the highest level of the hierarchy.     The effect of a weekly comingled kerbside collection service on household recycling in a gated community in Pretoria, South Africa

    Gated communities is a growing phenomenon in South Africa and abroad. The enclosed and private nature of gated communities poses certain challenges to recycling. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour, we examine the effect of a weekly comingled kerbside collection service on household recycling in a gated community. We used an ex post facto design and surveyed and compared recycling behaviour across two separate, but comparable communities; Boardwalk Meander, with no service, and Silver Lakes, with a service. Factor analyses validated the construct ‘perceived behavioural control’ in both settings. Households in Silver Lakes were more than three times likely to recycle in comparison to Boardwalk Meander. Multivariate Analysis of Variance suggests that the service had an overall significant effect on attitude, subjective norm and control. Post hoc tests suggest that recyclers in Silver Lakes felt equally positive, but more pressured and able to recycle, as compared to recyclers in Boardwalk Meander. Significantly more recyclers and non-recyclers in Silver Lakes felt they had enough space to recycle, as compared to their counterparts in Boardwalk Meander, even though house and yard sizes were the same across the two settings.     Effect of recrystallization on tensile behavior, texture, and anisotropy of Ti-3Al-2.5 V cold pilgered tubes

    International audienceThe recrystallized volume fraction of Ti 3Al 2.5aˆV seamless tubes is measured using electron BackScatter diffraction (EBSD) after annealing under various conditions. Standard tensile tests and contractile strain ratio (CSR) measurements are carried out in order to analyze the effect of recrystallization on the tensile behavior and the anisotropy of the tubes. The tensile tests show anomalous yield-point phenomena, which become stronger when the recrystallized fraction is increased. CSR value changes through recrystallization, from 0.8 in the cold worked stress relieved (CWSR) state to 1.1 in the fully recrystallized structure. Orientation distribution functions (ODFs) calculated from X-ray data reveal a decay in the intensity of the crystallographic texture as recrystallization advances. This can explain the tendency toward isotropy when complete recrystallization is achieve

    The shadow knows: using shadows to investigate the structure of the pretransitional disk of HD 100453

    We present GPI polarized intensity imagery of HD 100453 in Y-, J-, and K1 bands which reveals an inner gap (9−189 - 18 au), an outer disk (18−3918-39 au) with two prominent spiral arms, and two azimuthally-localized dark features also present in SPHERE total intensity images (Wagner 2015). SED fitting further suggests the radial gap extends to 11 au. The narrow, wedge-like shape of the dark features appears similar to predictions of shadows cast by a inner disk which is misaligned with respect to the outer disk. Using the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code HOCHUNCK3D (Whitney 2013), we construct a model of the disk which allows us to determine its physical properties in more detail. From the angular separation of the features we measure the difference in inclination between the disks 45∘^{\circ}, and their major axes, PA = 140∘^{\circ} east of north for the outer disk and 100∘^{\circ}for the inner disk. We find an outer disk inclination of 25±10∘25 \pm 10^{\circ} from face-on in broad agreement with the Wagner 2015 measurement of 34∘^{\circ}. SPHERE data in J- and H-bands indicate a reddish disk which points to HD 100453 evolving into a young debris disk
