Trajectory-Based Dynamic Map Labeling
In this paper we introduce trajectory-based labeling, a new variant of
dynamic map labeling, where a movement trajectory for the map viewport is
given. We define a general labeling model and study the active range
maximization problem in this model. The problem is NP-complete and W[1]-hard.
In the restricted, yet practically relevant case that no more than k labels can
be active at any time, we give polynomial-time algorithms. For the general case
we present a practical ILP formulation with an experimental evaluation as well
as approximation algorithms.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, extended version of a paper to appear at ISAAC

The effect of scale-free topology on the robustness and evolvability of genetic regulatory networks
We investigate how scale-free (SF) and Erdos-Renyi (ER) topologies affect the
interplay between evolvability and robustness of model gene regulatory networks
with Boolean threshold dynamics. In agreement with Oikonomou and Cluzel (2006)
we find that networks with SFin topologies, that is SF topology for incoming
nodes and ER topology for outgoing nodes, are significantly more evolvable
towards specific oscillatory targets than networks with ER topology for both
incoming and outgoing nodes. Similar results are found for networks with SFboth
and SFout topologies. The functionality of the SFout topology, which most
closely resembles the structure of biological gene networks (Babu et al.,
2004), is compared to the ER topology in further detail through an extension to
multiple target outputs, with either an oscillatory or a non-oscillatory
nature. For multiple oscillatory targets of the same length, the differences
between SFout and ER networks are enhanced, but for non-oscillatory targets
both types of networks show fairly similar evolvability. We find that SF
networks generate oscillations much more easily than ER networks do, and this
may explain why SF networks are more evolvable than ER networks are for
oscillatory phenotypes. In spite of their greater evolvability, we find that
networks with SFout topologies are also more robust to mutations than ER
networks. Furthermore, the SFout topologies are more robust to changes in
initial conditions (environmental robustness). For both topologies, we find
that once a population of networks has reached the target state, further
neutral evolution can lead to an increase in both the mutational robustness and
the environmental robustness to changes in initial conditions.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure
Macroscopic Dynamics of Multi-Lane Traffic
We present a macroscopic model of mixed multi-lane freeway traffic that can
be easily calibrated to empirical traffic data, as is shown for Dutch highway
data. The model is derived from a gas-kinetic level of description, including
effects of vehicular space requirements and velocity correlations between
successive vehicles. We also give a derivation of the lane-changing rates. The
resulting dynamic velocity equations contain non-local and anisotropic
interaction terms which allow a robust and efficient numerical simulation of
multi-lane traffic. As demonstrated by various examples, this facilitates the
investigation of synchronization patterns among lanes and effects of on-ramps,
off-ramps, lane closures, or accidents.Comment: For related work see

Coherent resonant tunneling in ac fields
We have analyzed the tunneling transmission probability and electronic
current density through resonant heterostructures in the presence of an
external electromagnetic field. In this work, we compare two different models
for a double barrier : In the first case the effect of the external field is
taken into account by spatially dependent AC voltages and in the second one the
electromagnetic field is described in terms of a photon field that irradiates
homogeneously the whole sample. While in the first description the tunneling
takes place mainly through photo sidebands in the case of homogeneous
illumination the main effective tunneling channels correspond to the coupling
between different electronic states due to photon absorption and emission. The
difference of tunneling mechanisms between these configurations is strongly
reflected in the transmission and current density which present very different
features in both cases. In order to analyze these effects we have obtained,
within the Transfer Hamiltonian framework, a general expression for the
transition probability for coherent resonant tunneling in terms of the Green's
function of the system.Comment: 16 pages,Figures available upon request,to appear in Phys.Rev B (15

Delocalization in harmonic chains with long-range correlated random masses
We study the nature of collective excitations in harmonic chains with masses
exhibiting long-range correlated disorder with power spectrum proportional to
, where is the wave-vector of the modulations on the random
masses landscape. Using a transfer matrix method and exact diagonalization, we
compute the localization length and participation ratio of eigenmodes within
the band of allowed energies. We find extended vibrational modes in the
low-energy region for . In order to study the time evolution of an
initially localized energy input, we calculate the second moment of
the energy spatial distribution. We show that , besides being dependent
of the specific initial excitation and exhibiting an anomalous diffusion for
weakly correlated disorder, assumes a ballistic spread in the regime
due to the presence of extended vibrational modes.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure
Charge Transport Through Open, Driven Two-Level Systems with Dissipation
We derive a Floquet-like formalism to calculate the stationary average
current through an AC driven double quantum dot in presence of dissipation. The
method allows us to take into account arbitrary coupling strengths both of a
time-dependent field and a bosonic environment. We numerical evaluate a
truncation scheme and compare with analytical, perturbative results such as the
Tien-Gordon formula.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Benzyne in V4334 Sqr: A Quest for the Ring with SOFIA/EXES
Large aromatic molecules are ubiquitous in both circumstellar and interstellar environments. Detection of small aromatic molecules, such as benzene (C6H6) and benzyne (C6H4), are rare in astrophysical environments. Detection of such species will have major implications for our understanding of the astrochemistry involved in the formation of the molecules necessary for life, including modeling the chemical pathways to the formation of larger hydrocarbon molecules. We conducted a search for the infrared 18 ÎĽm spectral signature of benzyne in V4334 Sgr with the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)/Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph (EXES) finding no evidence for a feature at the sensitivity of our observations
Aqueous Extract of Ficus bengalensis Linn. Bark for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of aqueous extract of Ficus bengalensis Linn. bark (AEFB) on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Effects of AEFB were studied on 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS, 0.25 ml 120 mg/ml in 50% ethanol intrarectally, on first day only)-induced IBD in rats. Effects of co-administration of prednisolone (2 mg/kg) and AEFB (250, 500 mg/kg) for 21 days were also evaluated. Various physical parameters including body weight, food, and water intake measured on 1st and 21st days. At end of the experiment, various histopathological indexes are assessed. The colon homogenate malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and nitric oxide (NO) levels and % mast cell protection in mesentery were also measured. In our study, we found that AEFB has a significant protective effect in the inflammatory bowel disease as compared to prednisolone in rats
Adiabatic quantum pump in the presence of external ac voltages
We investigate a quantum pump which in addition to its dynamic pump
parameters is subject to oscillating external potentials applied to the
contacts of the sample. Of interest is the rectification of the ac currents
flowing through the mesoscopic scatterer and their interplay with the quantum
pump effect. We calculate the adiabatic dc current arising under the
simultaneous action of both the quantum pump effect and classical
rectification. In addition to two known terms we find a third novel
contribution which arises from the interference of the ac currents generated by
the external potentials and the ac currents generated by the pump. The
interference contribution renormalizes both the quantum pump effect and the ac
rectification effect. Analysis of this interference effect requires a
calculation of the Floquet scattering matrix beyond the adiabatic approximation
based on the frozen scattering matrix alone. The results permit us to find the
instantaneous current. In addition to the current generated by the oscillating
potentials, and the ac current due to the variation of the charge of the frozen
scatterer, there is a third contribution which represents the ac currents
generated by an oscillating scatterer. We argue that the resulting pump effect
can be viewed as a quantum rectification of the instantaneous ac currents
generated by the oscillating scatterer. These instantaneous currents are an
intrinsic property of a nonstationary scattering process.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
