Inhibition of the stress-activated kinase, p38, does not affect the virus transcriptional program of herpes simplex virus type 1
To investigate the impact of stress kinase p38 activation on HSV-1 transcription, we performed a global transcript profile analysis of viral mRNA using an oligonucleotide-based DNA microarray. RNA was isolated from Vero cells infected with the KOS strain of HSV-1 in the presence or absence of SB203580, a pyridinyl imidazole inhibitor of p38. Under conditions that eliminated ATF2 activation but had no effect on c-, and reduced virus yield by 85–90%, no effect on accumulation of viral IE, DE, or L transcripts was observed by array analysis or selected Northern blot analysis at 2, 4, and 6 h post infection. Results of array data from cells infected with the ICP27 mutant d27-1 in the presence or absence of SB203580 only reflected the known restricted transcription phenotype of the ICP27 mutant. This result is consistent with a role for p38 activation on virus replication lying downstream of the essential role of ICP27 in DE and perhaps late transcription regulation. No effect of SB203580 on transcription was detected after infection with the ICP0 mutant 7134, at 0.5 or 5.0 PFU/cell, though decreases in the rate of accumulation of all kinetic classes of mRNA could be detected, relative to virus. These results indicate that inhibiting p38 activity in Vero cells, while significantly reducing virus yield, demonstrated no obvious impact on the program of viral transcription
The Special Science Dilemma and How Culture Solves It

It first appeared from Taylor & Francis via http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00048402.2014.987149I argue that there is a tension between the claim that at least some kinds in the special sciences are multiply realized and the claim that the reason kinds are prized by science is that they enter into a variety of different empirical generalizations. Nevertheless, I show that this tension ceases in the case of ‘cultural homologues’–such as specific ideologies, religions, and folk wisdom. I argue that the instances of such special science kinds do have several projectable properties in common due to their shared history of reproduction, and that the social learning involved means we should also expect these kinds to be multiply realized
CPsuperH2.3: an Updated Tool for Phenomenology in the MSSM with Explicit CP Violation
We describe the Fortran code CPsuperH2.3, which incorporates the following
updates compared with its predecessor CPsuperH2.0. It implements improved
calculations of the Higgs-boson masses and mixing including stau contributions
and finite threshold effects on the tau-lepton Yukawa coupling. It incorporates
the LEP limits on the processes e^+ e^- to H_i Z, H_i H_j and the CMS limits on
H_i to tau^+ tau^- obtained from 4.6/fb of data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7
TeV. It also includes the decay mode H_i to Z gamma and the Schiff-moment
contributions to the electric dipole moments of Mercury and Radium225, with
several calculational options for the case of Mercury. These additions make
CPsuperH2.3 a suitable tool for analyzing possible CP-violating effects in the

Relaxation Effects in the Transition Temperature of Superconducting HgBa2CuO4+delta
In previous studies on a number of under- and overdoped high temperature
superconductors, including YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-y} and Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+\delta},
the transition temperature T_c has been found to change with time in a manner
which depends on the sample's detailed temperature and pressure history. This
relaxation behavior in T_c is believed to originate from rearrangements within
the oxygen sublattice. In the present high-pressure studies on
HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} to 0.8 GPa we find clear evidence for weak relaxation
effects in strongly under- and overdoped samples () with
an activation energy . For overdoped
HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} E_{A} increases under pressure more rapidly than
previously observed for YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.41}, yielding an activation volume of
+11 \pm 5 cm^{3}; the dependence of T_c on pressure is markedly nonlinear, an
anomalous result for high-T_c superconductors in the present pressure range,
giving evidence for a change in the electronic and/or structural properties
near 0.4 GPa

Screening polymeric ionic liquids for chromatography-based purification of bacteriophage M13
M13 bacteriophage is a key instrument in phage display applications, as well as a possible antibacterial therapeutic agent due to its highly restrictive bacterial pathogenesis, and other applications. The traditional phage purification process is usually achieved by gradient ultracentrifugation or a combination of precipitation, centrifugation and microfiltration. These approaches easily lead to long process times, high operational costs, phage aggregation and consequent product loss (approximately 60%). This work is thus focused on an alternative potential large-scale process to achieve high yield and purity while minimizing the operational costs.
Electrostatic-based separation processes are also common biomolecules purification techniques. Although anion exchange chromatography has been used before to purify several viral particles, this technique has been poorly reported for the purification of M13 phage. In a recent work, our group has demonstrated the use of a predominant anion exchange process, where a polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) was used as an alternative separation matrix for M13 bacteriophage. In this work, a variety of system parameters was studied, including chemical structure of the cation and the anion, the crosslinker nature and its concentration, either in batch adsorption/elution or chromatographic operation mode. The PIL-based chromatographic operation mode revealed to be a suitable separation process for M13 from directly filtered E. coli supernatant, reaching over 70% M13 recovery and 4.6 purification factor in a single step. To our knowledge, this is the first time that PILs have been reported as separation agents for bioproducts from complex mixtures.publishe
The Effect of Shear on Phase-Ordering Dynamics with Order-Parameter-Dependent Mobility: The Large-n Limit
The effect of shear on the ordering-kinetics of a conserved order-parameter
system with O(n) symmetry and order-parameter-dependent mobility
\Gamma({\vec\phi}) \propto (1- {\vec\phi} ^2/n)^\alpha is studied analytically
within the large-n limit. In the late stage, the structure factor becomes
anisotropic and exhibits multiscaling behavior with characteristic length
scales (t^{2\alpha+5}/\ln t)^{1/2(\alpha+2)} in the flow direction and (t/\ln
t)^{1/2(\alpha+2)} in directions perpendicular to the flow. As in the \alpha=0
case, the structure factor in the shear-flow plane has two parallel ridges.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Sneutrino-induced like sign dilepton signal with conserved R-parity
Lepton number violation could be manifest in the sneutrino sector of
supersymmetric extensions of the standard model with conserved R-parity. Then
sneutrinos decay partly into the ``wrong sign charged lepton'' final state, if
kinematically accessible. In sneutrino pair production or associated single
sneutrino production, the signal then is a like sign dilepton final state.
Under favourable circumstances, such a signal could be visible at the LHC or a
next generation linear collider for a relative sneutrino mass-splitting of
order and sneutrino width of order (1 GeV). On the
other hand, the like sign dilepton event rate at the TEVATRON is probably too

Multispectral UV Fluorescence Detection of a Dilute Constituent in an Optically Dense Matrix
Multispectral UV fluorescence measurements were made of an optically dense medium (fetal bovine serum, FBS) spiked with sodium salicylate at concentrate ions from 0.2 to 500 pg/ml . Analysis of the spectra show that, depending on experimental conditions, reasonably good estimates of concentration can be obtained across the entire range of concentrate ions. Experimental conditions required for recovering these estimates are demonstrated
