Family close but friends closer: exploring social support and resilience in older spousal dementia carers
© 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis GroupObjectives: Spousal dementia carers have unique support needs; they are likely to disengage from their existing social networks as they need to devote more time to caring as the disease progresses. Previously we showed that support resources can facilitate resilience in carers, but the relationship is complex and varies by relationship type. The current paper aims to explore social support as a key component of resilience to identify the availability, function and perceived functional aspects of support provided to older spousal dementia carers. Method: We conducted 23 in-depth qualitative interviews with spousal carers from two carer support groups and a care home in North West England. Results: Family and friends served a wide range of functions but were equally available to resilient and non-resilient participants. Family support was perceived as unhelpful if it created feelings of over-dependence. Participants were less likely to resist involvement of grandchildren due to their relatively narrow and low-level support functions. Friend support was perceived as most helpful when it derived from those in similar circumstances. Neighbours played a functionally unique role of crisis management. These perceptions may moderate the effect of support on resilience. Conclusion: Family and friend support is not always sufficient to facilitate resilience. Support functions facilitate resilience only if they are perceived to match need. Implications of these findings are discussed
qBitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Quantum Cash System
A decentralized online quantum cash system, called qBitcoin, is given. We
design the system which has great benefits of quantization in the following
sense. Firstly, quantum teleportation technology is used for coin transaction,
which prevents from the owner of the coin keeping the original coin data even
after sending the coin to another. This was a main problem in a classical
circuit and a blockchain was introduced to solve this issue. In qBitcoin, the
double-spending problem never happens and its security is guaranteed
theoretically by virtue of quantum information theory. Making a block is time
consuming and the system of qBitcoin is based on a quantum chain, instead of
blocks. Therefore a payment can be completed much faster than Bitcoin. Moreover
we employ quantum digital signature so that it naturally inherits properties of
peer-to-peer (P2P) cash system as originally proposed in Bitcoin.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
Who does not gain weight? Prevalence and predictors of weight maintenance in young women
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and predictors of weight maintenance over time in a large sample of young Australian women. DESIGN: This population study examined baseline and 4 y follow-up data from the cohort of young women participating in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women\u27s Health. SUBJECTS: A total of 8726 young women aged 18-23 y at baseline. MEASURES: Height, weight and body mass index (BMI); physical activity; time spent sitting; selected eating behaviours (eg dieting, disordered eating, takeaway food consumption); cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption; parity; and sociodemographic characteristics. RESULTS: Only 44% of the women reported their BMI at follow-up to be within 5% of their baseline BMI (maintainers); 41% had gained weight and 15% had lost weight. Weight maintainers were more likely to be in managerial or professional occupations; to have never married; to be currently studying; and not to be mothers. Controlling for sociodemographic factors, weight maintainers were more likely to be in a healthy weight range at baseline, and to report that they spent less time sitting, and consumed less takeaway food, than women who gained weight. CONCLUSIONS: Fewer than half the young women in this community sample maintained their weight over this 4 y period in their early twenties. Findings of widespread weight gain, particularly among those already overweight, suggest that early adulthood, which is a time of significant life changes for many women, may be an important time for implementing strategies to promote maintenance of healthy weight. Strategies which encourage decreased sitting time and less takeaway food consumption may be effective for encouraging weight maintenance at this life stage.<br /
A synthetic gene network for tuning protein degradation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Protein decay rates are regulated by degradation machinery that clears unnecessary housekeeping proteins and maintains appropriate dynamic resolution for transcriptional regulators. Turnover rates are also crucial for fluorescence reporters that must strike a balance between sufficient fluorescence for signal detection and temporal resolution for tracking dynamic responses. Here, we use components of the Escherichia coli degradation machinery to construct a Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain that allows for tunable degradation of a tagged protein. Using a microfluidic platform tailored for single-cell fluorescence measurements, we monitor protein decay rates after repression using an ssrA-tagged fluorescent reporter. We observe a half-life ranging from 91 to 22 min, depending on the level of activation of the degradation genes. Computational modeling of the underlying set of enzymatic reactions leads to GFP decay curves that are in excellent agreement with the observations, implying that degradation is governed by MichaelisâMenten-type interactions. In addition to providing a reporter with tunable dynamic resolution, our findings set the stage for explorations of the effect of protein degradation on gene regulatory and signalling pathways

Two-Photon Absorption in Monolayer MXenes
Twoâphoton absorption (2PA) is a nonlinear optical (NLO) effect that typically occurs in a conventional semiconductor whose bandgap is larger than the energy of one excited photon but smaller than the energy of two photons. In this work, the experimental observation of strong 2PA in gapless MXene monolayers is reported. This phenomenon is verified by a nonlinear transmission method and ultrafast dynamic studies based on a wavelengthâdegenerate, nonâcollinear pumpâprobe technique. The unconventional 2PA is attributed to the structures of the MXene energy bands near the Fermi level, which favors twoâphoton transitions and suppresses oneâphoton transitions due to parallel band absorption effects. These results, as well as the measured NLO parameters including the 2PA coefficient, absorption crossâsection, excited carrier lifetimes, and thirdâorder NLO susceptibility, provide a systematic understanding of the unusual NLO effect in MXenes and may be applied in advanced photonic and optoelectronic devices

Von Bezold assimilation effect reverses in stereoscopic conditions
Lightness contrast and lightness assimilation are opposite phenomena: in contrast,
grey targets appear darker when bordering bright surfaces (inducers) rather than dark ones; in
assimilation, the opposite occurs. The question is: which visual process favours the occurrence
of one phenomenon over the other? Researchers provided three answers to this question. The
first asserts that both phenomena are caused by peripheral processes; the second attributes their
occurrence to central processes; and the third claims that contrast involves central processes,
whilst assimilation involves peripheral ones. To test these hypotheses, an experiment on an IT
system equipped with goggles for stereo vision was run. Observers were asked to evaluate the
lightness of a grey target, and two variables were systematically manipulated: (i) the apparent
distance of the inducers; and (ii) brightness of the inducers. The retinal stimulation was kept
constant throughout, so that the peripheral processes remained the same. The results show that
the lightness of the target depends on both variables. As the retinal stimulation was kept constant, we
conclude that central mechanisms are involved in both lightness contrast and lightness assimilation
Black Stork Down: Military Discourses in Bird Conservation in Malta
Tensions between Maltese hunters and bird conservation NGOs have intensified over the past decade. Conservation NGOs have become frustrated with the Maltese State for conceding to the hunter lobby and negotiating derogations from the European Unionâs Bird Directive. Some NGOs have recently started to organize complex field-operations where volunteers are trained to patrol the landscape, operate drones and other surveillance technologies, detect illegalities, and lead police teams to arrest poachers. We describe the sophisticated military metaphors which conservation NGOs have developed to describe, guide and legitimize their efforts to the Maltese public and their fee-paying members. We also discuss why such groups might be inclined to adopt these metaphors. Finally, we suggest that anthropological studies of discourse could help understand delicate contexts such as this where conservation NGOs, hunting associations and the State have ended in political deadlock
Microtubule dynamics in cell division : exploring living cells with polarized light microscopy

The birefringence of spindle filaments in normally dividing plant and animal cells, and those treated by various agents, revealed: A) the reality of spindle fibers and fibrils in healthy living cells; B) the labile, dynamic nature of the molecular filaments making up the spindle fibers; C) the mode of fibrogenesis and action of orienting centers; and D) force-generating properties based on the disassembly and assembly of the fibrils. These studies, which were carried out directly on living cells using improved polarizing microscopes, in fact, predicted the reversible assembly properties of isolated microtubules
