    The ∼860-Ma, cordilleran-type guandaoshan dioritic pluton in the Yangtze Block, SW China: Implications for the origin of neoproterozoic magmatism

    The tectonic setting of the widespread Neoproterozoic igneous rocks in South China has long been a matter of debate. Situated in the western margin of the Yangtze Block of South China, the Guandaoshan pluton is composed of diorite in the core and quartz diorite in the margin. Both types contain abundant mafic enclaves and mafic dikes. This pluton is dated at 858 ± 7 Ma by the SHRIMP zircon U-Pb method. The rocks have SiO 2 contents of 52.8-63.8 wt%, Al 2O 3 contents of 17.4-20.6 wt%, Na 2O contents of 2.14-3.74 wt%, and K 2O contents of 0.44-1.61 wt%. They are calcalkaline with an Al saturation index, A/CNK 1, and they have Fe numbers <0.8 (Fe 2O 3/[Fe 2O 3 + MgO]). Their total rare earth element (REE) contents range from 19 to 45 ppm, with concave chondrite-normalized patterns slightly depleted in middle REEs, indicating extensive amphibole fractionation. Their whole-rock ε Nd(t) values range from +3.9 to +5.1, and initial 87Sr/ 86Sr ratios range from 0.7028 to 0.7033. They have zircon ε Hf(t) values ranging from +11 to +17, with mean Hf model ages of around 860 Ma, clearly indicating a depleted-mantle source. In the primitive mantle-normalized trace element spider diagram, the rocks show pronounced enrichment of Rb, Ba, Th, and Pb and depletion of Nb, Ta, and Ti, a typical arc signature. The Guandaoshan pluton is an amphibole-rich, calc-alkaline, Cordilleran-type granitoid, a typical product of subduction-zone magmatism. The occurrence of this Neoproterozoic Cordilleran-type granitoid suggests that the western margin of the Yangtze Block was an Andean-type continental margin at that time, rather than mantle plume-related rifting setting. © 2008 by The University of Chicago.     Type Iax Supernovae

    Type Iax supernovae (SN Iax), also called SN 2002cx-like supernovae, are the largest class of peculiar white dwarf (thermonuclear) supernovae, with over fifty members known. SN Iax have lower ejecta velocity and lower luminosities, and these parameters span a much wider range, than normal type Ia supernovae (SN Ia). SN Iax are spectroscopically similar to some SN Ia near maximum light, but are unique among all supernovae in their late-time spectra, which never become fully nebular. SN Iax overwhelmingly occur in late-type host galaxies, implying a relatively young population. The SN Iax 2012Z is the only white dwarf supernova for which a pre-explosion progenitor system has been detected. A variety of models have been proposed, but one leading scenario has emerged: a type Iax supernova may be a pure-deflagration explosion of a carbon-oxygen (or hybrid carbon-oxygen-neon) white dwarf, triggered by helium accretion to the Chandrasekhar mass, that does not necessarily fully disrupt the star.Comment: Author version of a chapter in the 'Handbook of Supernovae', edited by A.     Provenance and tectonic setting of the Neoproterozoic Yanbian Group, western Yangtze Block (SW China)

    Tectonic evolution of the Yangtze Block of South China during Neoproterozoic time has been a major focus of debate and is important in the reconstruction of the Rodinian supercontinent. The Yanbian Group in the western margin of the Yangtze Block is a well-preserved Neoproterozoic volcanic-sedimentary sequence and provides a rare opportunity to examine the provenance and tectonic setting. It consists of a lower part composed of ∼1500 m thick basaltic lavas and an upper part of ∼3500 m thick flysch deposits. The flysch sequence contains typical deep marine turbidites consisting mainly of fine-grained volcaniclastic sandstones and mudstones, indicating a submarine fan depositional system. Detrital zircon dating yields ages ranging from ca. 865 Ma to 1000 Ma with two peaks at ca. 900 Ma and 920 Ma, respectively. The Yanbian Group is intruded by the ∼860 Ma Guandaoshan dioritic pluton, constraining its depositional age at ca. 870 Ma. The sandstones contain abundant feldspar and lithic fragments with minor amounts of quartz and have an average composition of Q 16F 35L 49, suggesting a proximal source and an undissected to transitional arc setting. The lithic fragments in the sandstones point to andesitic and felsic volcanic rock sources. The sandstones and mudstones have intermediate SiO 2/Al 2O 3 (typically 3-6), high Fe 2O 3 + MgO contents (5-12 wt%), and moderate to high K 2O/Na 2O ratios (generally 0.1-1 and 1-10 for sandstones and mudstones, respectively). In comparison with average upper continental crust, they show strong negative Nb-Ta anomalies, slight depletion of Zr-Hf, La and Th, but moderate enrichment of V, Cr, Ni, and Sc. These rocks show LREE enrichment (La/Yb N = 5.3-7.4) with flat HREE, and pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu * = 0.6-0.74) in chondrite-normalized REE patterns, similar to post-Archean shales. Geochemical data for these rocks suggest an arc setting and intermediate-felsic volcanic source, consistent with a back-arc basin scenario for the basaltic lavas in the lower Yanbian Group. Together with regional geological evidence, the turbidites of the Yanbian Group strongly support a model in which the western margin of the Yangtze Block was a major magmatic arc, active probably from ∼920 Ma to 740 Ma, a period of more than 180 million years. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.     Performance of laterally loaded piles considering soil and interface parameters

To investigate the soil-pile interactive performance under lateral loads, a set of laboratory model tests was conducted on remoulded test bed of soft clay and medium dense sand. Then, a simplified boundary element analysis had been carried out assuming floating pile. In case of soft clay, it has been observed that lateral loads on piles can initiate the formation of a gap, soil heave and the tension crack in the vicinity of the soil surface and the interface, whereas in medium dense sand, a semi-elliptical depression zone can develop. Comparison of test and boundary element results indicates the accuracy of the solution developed. However, in the boundary element analysis, the possible shear stresses likely to be developed at the interface are ignored in order to simplify the existing complex equations. Moreover, it is unable to capture the influence of base restraint in case of a socketed pile. To bridge up this gap and to study the influence of the initial stress state and interface parameters, a field based case-study of laterally-loaded pile in layered soil with socketed tip is explored and modelled using the finite element method. The results of the model have been verified against known field measurements from a case-study. Parametric studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure and the interface strength reduction factor on the results of the model

    Dynamics of one-dimensional tight-binding models with arbitrary time-dependent external homogeneous fields

    The exact propagators of two one-dimensional systems with time-dependent external fields are presented by following the path-integral method. It is shown that the Bloch acceleration theorem can be generalized to the impulse-momentum theorem in quantum version. We demonstrate that an evolved Gaussian wave packet always keeps its shape in an arbitrary time-dependent homogeneous driven field. Moreover, that stopping and accelerating of a wave packet can be achieved by the pulsed field in a diabatic way.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    The promoters of human cell cycle genes integrate signals from two tumor suppressive pathways during cellular transformation

    Deciphering regulatory events that drive malignant transformation represents a major challenge for systems biology. Here we analyzed genome-wide transcription profiling of an in-vitro transformation process. We focused on a cluster of genes whose expression levels increased as a function of p53 and p16INK4A tumor suppressors inactivation. This cluster predominantly consists of cell cycle genes and constitutes a signature of a diversity of cancers. By linking expression profiles of the genes in the cluster with the dynamic behavior of p53 and p16INK4A, we identified a promoter architecture that integrates signals from the two tumor suppressive channels and that maps their activity onto distinct levels of expression of the cell cycle genes, which in turn, correspond to different cellular proliferation rates. Taking components of the mitotic spindle as an example, we experimentally verified our predictions that p53-mediated transcriptional repression of several of these novel targets is dependent on the activities of p21, NFY and E2F. Our study demonstrates how a well-controlled transformation process allows linking between gene expression, promoter architecture and activity of upstream signaling molecules.Comment: To appear in Molecular Systems Biolog

    A Comparison of Centering Algorithms in the Astrometry of Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem Images and Anthe’s Astrometric Reduction

    In the CAVIAR software package, a standard tool for astrometry of images from the Cassini imaging science subsystem (ISS), Gaussian fitting is used to measure the centre of point-like objects, achieving a typical precision of about 0.2 pixels. In this work, we consider how alternative methods may improve on this. We compare three traditional centroiding methods: two-dimensional Gaussian fitting, median, and modified moment. Results using 56 selected images show that the centroiding precision of the modified moment method is significantly better than the other two methods, with standard deviations for all residuals in sample and line of 0.065 and 0.063 pixels, respectively, representing a factor of over 2 improvement compared to Gaussian fitting. Secondly, a comparison of observations using Cassini ISS images of Anthe is performed. Anthe results show a similar improvement. The modified moment method is then used to reduce all ISS images of Anthe during the period 2008–2017. The observed-minus-calculated residuals relative to the JPL SAT393 ephemeris are calculated. In terms of α × cos(δ) and δ in the Cassini-centred international celestial reference frame, mean values of all residuals are close to 0 km, and their standard deviations are less than 1 km for narrow angle camera images, and about 4 km for wide angle camera images
