    Vegetation NDVI Linked to Temperature and Precipitation in the Upper Catchments of Yellow River

    Vegetation in the upper catchment of Yellow River is critical for the ecological stability of the whole watershed. The dominant vegetation cover types in this region are grassland and forest, which can strongly influence the eco-environmental status of the whole watershed. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for grassland and forest has been calculated and its daily correlation models were deduced by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer products on 12 dates in 2000, 2003, and 2006. The responses of the NDVI values with the inter-annual grassland and forest to three climatic indices (i.e., yearly precipitation and highest and lowest temperature) were analyzed showing that, except for the lowest temperature, the yearly precipitation and highest temperature had close correlations with the NDVI values of the two vegetation communities. The value of correlation coefficients ranged from 0.815 to 0.951 (p <0.01). Furthermore, the interactions of NDVI values of vegetation with the climatic indicators at monthly interval were analyzed. The NDVI of vegetation and three climatic indices had strong positive correlations (larger than 0.733, p <0.01). The monthly correlations also provided the threshold values for the three climatic indictors, to be used for simulating vegetation growth grassland under different climate features, which is essential for the assessment of the vegetation growth and for regional environmental management

    The Properties of H{\alpha} Emission-Line Galaxies at z = 2.24

    Using deep narrow-band H2S1H_2S1 and KsK_{s}-band imaging data obtained with CFHT/WIRCam, we identify a sample of 56 Hα\alpha emission-line galaxies (ELGs) at z=2.24z=2.24 with the 5σ\sigma depths of H2S1=22.8H_2S1=22.8 and Ks=24.8K_{s}=24.8 (AB) over 383 arcmin2^{2} area in the ECDFS. A detailed analysis is carried out with existing multi-wavelength data in this field. Three of the 56 Hα\alpha ELGs are detected in Chandra 4 Ms X-ray observation and two of them are classified as AGNs. The rest-frame UV and optical morphologies revealed by HST/ACS and WFC3 deep images show that nearly half of the Hα\alpha ELGs are either merging systems or with a close companion, indicating that the merging/interacting processes play a key role in regulating star formation at cosmic epoch z=2-3; About 14% are too faint to be resolved in the rest-frame UV morphology due to high dust extinction. We estimate dust extinction from SEDs. We find that dust extinction is generally correlated with Hα\alpha luminosity and stellar mass (SM). Our results suggest that Hα\alpha ELGs are representative of star-forming galaxies (SFGs). Applying extinction correction for individual objects, we examine the intrinsic Hα\alpha luminosity function (LF) at z=2.24z=2.24, obtaining a best-fit Schechter function characterized by a faint-end slope of α=−1.3\alpha=-1.3. This is shallower than the typical slope of α∼−1.6\alpha \sim -1.6 in previous works based on constant extinction correction. We demonstrate that this difference is mainly due to the different extinction corrections. The proper extinction correction is thus key to recovering the intrinsic LF as the extinction globally increases with Hα\alpha luminosity. Moreover, we find that our Hα\alpha LF mirrors the SM function of SFGs at the same cosmic epoch.     Testing mechanisms of compensatory fitness of dioecy in a cosexual world

    Questions: All else being equal, populations of dioecious species with a 50:50 sex ratio have only half the effective reproductive population size of bisexual species of equal abundance. Consequently, there is a need to explain how dioecious and bisexual species coexist. Increased mean individual seed mass, fecundity, and population density have all been proposed as attributes of unisexual individuals or populations that may contribute to the persistence or resilience of dioecious species. To date, no studies have compared sympatric dioecious and cosexual species with respect to all three components of fitness. In this study, we sought evidence for these compensatory advantages (higher seed mass, greater seed production per unit basal area, and higher population density) in dioecious species. Location: Five 20–25&nbsp;ha forest dynamic plots spanning a latitudinal gradient in China, including two temperate, two subtropical, and one tropical forest. Methods: We used a phylogenetically corrected generalized linear modelling approach to assess the phylogenetic dependence and joint evolution of sexual system, seed mass and production, and ecological abundances among 48–333 species and 32,568–136,237 individuals per forest. Results: Across all five forests, we detected no consistent advantage for dioecious relative to sympatric cosexual species with respect to mean individual seed mass, seed production or the density of stems in any size class. Conclusions: Our study suggests that seed traits may provide compensatory mechanisms in some forests, but most often the coexistence of sexual systems cannot be explained by advantages of dioecy related to seed quality and demographic parameters. Future investigations of the factors that promote coexistence may increase our understanding by expanding the search to include attributes such as lifespan and tolerance or resistance to herbivores

    Observation of an in-plane magnetic-field-driven phase transition in a quantum Hall system with SU(4) symmetry

    In condensed matter physics, the study of electronic states with SU(N) symmetry has attracted considerable and growing attention in recent years, as systems with such a symmetry can often have a spontaneous symmetry-breaking effect giving rise to a novel ground state. For example, pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet of broken SU(2) symmetry has been realized by bringing two Landau levels close to degeneracy in a bilayer quantum Hall system. In the past several years, the exploration of collective states in other multi-component quantum Hall systems has emerged. Here we show the conventional pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnetic states with broken SU(2) symmetry collapsed rapidly into an unexpected state with broken SU(4) symmetry, by in-plane magnetic field in a two-subband GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system at filling factor around ν=4\nu=4. Within a narrow tilting range angle of 0.5 degrees, the activation energy increases as much as 12 K. While the origin of this puzzling observation remains to be exploited, we discuss the possibility of a long-sought pairing state of electrons with a four-fold degeneracy.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Adaptive feasible and infeasible tabu search for weighted vertex coloring

    The Weighted Vertex Coloring Problem of a vertex weighted graph is to partition the vertex set into k disjoint independent sets such that the sum of the costs of these sets is minimized, where the cost of each set is given by the maximum weight of a vertex (representative) in that set. To solve this NP-hard problem, we present the adaptive feasible and infeasible search algorithm (AFISA) that relies on a mixed search strategy exploring both feasible and infeasible solutions. From an initial feasible solution, AFISA seeks improved solutions by oscillating between feasible and infeasible regions. To prevent the search from going too far from feasibility boundaries, we introduce a control mechanism that adaptively makes the algorithm to go back and forth between feasible and infeasible solutions. To explore the search space, we use a tabu search optimization procedure to ensure an intensified exploitation of candidate solutions and an adaptive perturbation strategy to escape local optimum traps. We show extensive experimental results on 161 benchmark instances and present new upper bounds that are useful for future studies. We assess the benefit of the key features of the proposed approach. This work demonstrates that examining both feasible and infeasible solutions during the search is a highly effective search strategy for the considered coloring problem and could beneficially be applied to other constrained problems as well

    Drought events and their effects on vegetation productivity in China

    Many parts of the world have experienced frequent and severe droughts during the last few decades. Most previous studies examined the effects of specific drought events on vegetation productivity. In this study, we characterized the drought events in China from 1982 to 2012 and assessed their effects on vegetation productivity inferred from satellite data. We first assessed the occurrence, spatial extent, frequency, and severity of drought using the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). We then examined the impacts of droughts on China\u27s terrestrial ecosystems using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). During the period 1982–2012, China\u27s land area (%) experiencing drought showed an insignificant trend. However, the drought conditions had been more severe over most regions in northern parts of China since the end of the 1990s, indicating that droughts hit these regions more frequently due to the drier climate. The severe droughts substantially reduced annual and seasonal NDVI. The magnitude and direction of the detrended NDVI under drought stress varied with season and vegetation type. The inconsistency between the regional means of PDSI and detrended NDVI could be attributed to different responses of vegetation to drought and the timing, duration, severity, and lag effects of droughts. The negative effects of droughts on vegetation productivity were partly offset by the enhancement of plant growth resulting from factors such as lower cloudiness, warming climate, and human activities (e.g., afforestation, improved agricultural management practices)
