Fission studies with 140 MeV -Particles
Binary fission induced by 140 MeV -particles has been measured for
Ag, La, Ho and Au targets. The measured
quantities are the total kinetic energies, fragment masses, and fission cross
sections. The results are compared with other data and systematics. A minimum
of the fission probability in the vicinity is observed.Comment: 4 figures, 2 table
Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos: Background Sources for the Direct Dark Matter Searches
In experiments for direct dark matter searches, neutrinos coherently
scattering off nuclei can produce similar events as Weakly Interacting Massive
Particles (WIMPs). The calculated count rate for solar neutrinos in such
experiments is a few events per ton-year. This count rate strongly depends on
the nuclear recoil energy threshold achieved in the experiments for the WIMP
search. We show that solar neutrinos can be a serious background source for
direct dark matter search experiments using Ge, Ar, Xe and CaWO_4 as target
materials. To reach sensitivities better than approximatly 10^-10 pb for the
elastic WIMP nucleon spin-independent cross section in the zero-background
limit, energy thresholds for nuclear recoils should be approximatly >2.05 keV
for CaWO_4, >4.91 keV for Ge, >2.89 keV for Xe, and >8.62 keV for Ar as target
material. Next-generation experiments should not only strive for a reduction of
the present energy thresholds but mainly focus on an increase of the target
mass. Atmospheric neutrinos limit the achievable sensitivity for the
background-free direct dark matter search to approximatly >10^-12 pb.Comment: accepted by Astroparticle Physic
A common theme in extracellular fluids of beetles: extracellular superoxide dismutases crucial for balancing ROS in response to microbial challenge
Extracellular Cu/Zn superoxide dismutases (SODs) are critical for balancing the level of reactive oxygen species in the extracellular matrix of eukaryotes. In the present study we have detected constitutive SOD activity in the haemolymph and defensive secretions of different leaf beetle species. Exemplarily, we have chosen the mustard leaf beetle, Phaedon cochleariae, as representative model organism to investigate the role of extracellular SODs in antimicrobial defence. Qualitative and quantitative proteome analyses resulted in the identification of two extracellular Cu/Zn SODs in the haemolymph and one in the defensive secretions of juvenile P. cochleariae. Furthermore, quantitative expression studies indicated fat body tissue and defensive glands as the main synthesis sites of these SODs. Silencing of the two SODs revealed one of them, PcSOD3.1, as the only relevant enzyme facilitating SOD activity in haemolymph and defensive secretions in vivo. Upon challenge with the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae, PcSOD3.1-deficient larvae exhibited a significantly higher mortality compared to other SOD-silenced groups. Hence, our results serve as a basis for further research on SOD regulated host-pathogen interactions. In defensive secretions PcSOD3.1-silencing affected neither deterrent production nor activity against fungal growth. Instead, we propose another antifungal mechanism based on MRJP/yellow proteins in the defensive exudates
Results from 730 kg days of the CRESST-II Dark Matter Search
The CRESST-II cryogenic Dark Matter search, aiming at detection of WIMPs via
elastic scattering off nuclei in CaWO crystals, completed 730 kg days of
data taking in 2011. We present the data collected with eight detector modules,
each with a two-channel readout; one for a phonon signal and the other for
coincidently produced scintillation light. The former provides a precise
measure of the energy deposited by an interaction, and the ratio of
scintillation light to deposited energy can be used to discriminate different
types of interacting particles and thus to distinguish possible signal events
from the dominant backgrounds. Sixty-seven events are found in the acceptance
region where a WIMP signal in the form of low energy nuclear recoils would be
expected. We estimate background contributions to this observation from four
sources: 1) "leakage" from the e/\gamma-band 2) "leakage" from the
\alpha-particle band 3) neutrons and 4) Pb-206 recoils from Po-210 decay. Using
a maximum likelihood analysis, we find, at a high statistical significance,
that these sources alone are not sufficient to explain the data. The addition
of a signal due to scattering of relatively light WIMPs could account for this
discrepancy, and we determine the associated WIMP parameters.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figure
Trace mineral concentrations and accretion rates in the empty body and body tissues of growing Fleckvieh (German Simmental) bulls
This research project aimed to generate basic data for
specifying the trace mineral requirements of Fleckvieh (German Simmental)
bulls. Hence, the concentrations of the trace minerals iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu),
and manganese (Mn) in the empty-body and body tissue fractions of growing
Fleckvieh bulls slaughtered at 120–780 kg live weight were determined.
Results were used to calculate trace mineral accretion rates. Fe and Zn
represented the largest shares in the animals' bodies. The Zn accretion
increased, while Mn accretion steadily declined during cattle growth. Fe
accretion attained a maximum at 400 kg live weight. Cu accretion declined
until 600 kg live weight and then increased slightly afterwards. The provided
data may be used to adjust the recommendations with respect to the trace mineral
requirements of growing Fleckvieh bulls.</p
Embryonic development of pleuropodia of the cicada, Magicicada cassini
In many insects the first abdominal segment possesses embryonic appendages called pleuropodia. Here we show the embryogenesis of pleuropodial cells of the periodical cicada, Magicicada cassini (Fisher 1851) (Insecta, Homoptera, Cicadidae). An antibody, anti-horseradish perioxidase (HRP), that is usually neuron-specific strongly marked the pleuropodial anlagen and revealed their ectodermal origin shortly after limb bud formation. Thereafter the cells sank into the epidermis and their apical parts enlarged. A globular part protruded from the body wall. Filamentous structures were marked at the stem region and into the apical dilation. In later embryonic stages the pleuropodia degenerated. Despite the binding of anti-HRP the cells had no morphological neuronal characters and cannot be regarded as neurons. The binding indicates that glycosylated cell surface molecules contribute to the adhesion between the presumably glandular pleuropodial cells. In comparison, anti-HRP does not mark the pleuropodia of Orthoptera
