Crossover from weak localization to weak antilocalization in a disordered microbridge
We calculate the weak localization correction in the double crossover to
broken time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetry for a disordered microbridge
or a short disordered wire using a scattering-matrix approach. Whereas the
correction has universal limiting values in the three basic symmetry classes,
the functional form of the magnetoconductance is affected by eventual

Cystatins as calpain inhibitors: Engineered chicken cystatin- and stefin B-kininogen domain 2 hybrids support a cystatin-like mode of interaction with the catalytic subunit of μ-calpain
Within the cystatin superfamily, only kininogen domain 2 (KD2) is able to inhibit μ- and m-calpain. In an attempt to elucidate the structural requirements of cystatins for calpain inhibition, we constructed recombinant hybrids of human stefin B (an intracellular family 1 cystatin) with KD2 and Delta L110 deletion mutants of chicken cystatin-KD2 hybrids. Substitution of the N-terminal contact region of stefin B by the corresponding KD2 sequence resulted in a calpain inhibitor of K-i = 188 nM. Deletion of L110, which forms a beta -bulge in family 1 and 2 cystatins but is lacking in KD2, improved inhibition of mu -calpain 4- to 8-fold. All engineered cystatins were temporary inhibitors of calpain due to slow substrate-like cleavage of a single peptide bond corresponding to Gly9-Ala10 in chicken cystatin. Biomolecular interaction analysis revealed that, unlike calpastatin, the cystatin-type inhibitors do not bind to the calmodulin-like domain of the small subunit of calpain, and their interaction with the mu -calpain heterodimer is completely prevented by a synthetic peptide comprising subdomain B of calpastatin domain 1. Based on these results we propose that (i) cystatin-type calpain inhibitors interact with the active site of the catalytic domain of calpain in a similar cystatin-like mode as with papain and (ii) the potential for calpain inhibition is due to specific subsites within the papain-binding regions of the general cystatin fold
Relativistic coupled-cluster single-double method applied to alkali-metal atoms
A relativistic version of the coupled-cluster single-double (CCSD) method is
developed for atoms with a single valence electron. In earlier work, a
linearized version of the CCSD method (with extensions to include a dominant
class of triple excitations) led to accurate predictions for energies,
transition amplitudes, hyperfine constants, and other properties of monovalent
atoms. Further progress in high-precision atomic structure calculations for
heavy atoms calls for improvement of the linearized coupled-cluster
methodology. In the present work, equations for the single and double
excitation coefficients of the Dirac-Fock wave function, including all
non-linear coupled-cluster terms that contribute at the single-double level are
worked out. Contributions of the non-linear terms to energies, electric-dipole
matrix elements, and hyperfine constants of low-lying states in alkali-metal
atoms from Li to Cs are evaluated and the results are compared with other
calculations and with precise experiments.Comment: 12 page
Impact of gender and generational differences in work values and attitudes in an Arab culture
In this article, the work values and attitudes of 241 nationals from the United Arab Emirates are examined. Specifically, we assessed the impact of generational membership and gender on the Islamic work ethic, individualism, attitudes toward women at work, and perceptions of the utility of wasta. Results suggest that values and attitudes held by people in the Middle East are changing on the one hand (e.g., individualism) but are also deeply held on the other (e.g., the Islamic work ethic). Results also suggest that the perceptions about the utility of wasta differ across generations. The implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
