Closed-loop two-echelon repairable item systems
In this paper we consider closed loop two-echelon repairable item systems with repair facilities both at a number of local service centers (called bases) and at a central location (the depot). The goal of the system is to maintain a number of production facilities (one at each base) in optimal operational condition. Each production facility consists of a number of identical machines which may fail incidentally. Each repair facility may be considered to be a multi-server station, while any transport from the depot to the bases is modeled as an ample server. At all bases as well as at the depot, ready-for-use spare parts (machines) are kept in stock. Once a machine in the production cell of a certain base fails, it is replaced by a ready-for-use machine from that base's stock, if available. The failed machine is either repaired at the base or repaired at the central repair facility. In the case of local repair, the machine is added to the local spare parts stock as a ready-for-use machine after repair. If a repair at the depot is needed, the base orders a machine from the central spare parts stock to replenish its local stock, while the failed machine is added to the central stock after repair. Orders are satisfied on a first-come-first-served basis while any requirement that cannot be satisfied immediately either at the bases or at the depot is backlogged. In case of a backlog at a certain base, that base's production cell performs worse. To determine the steady state probabilities of the system, we develop a slightly aggregated system model and propose a special near-product-form solution that provides excellent approximations of relevant performance measures. The depot repair shop is modeled as a server with state-dependent service rates, of which the parameters follow from an application of Norton's theorem for Closed Queuing Networks. A special adaptation to a general Multi-Class MDA algorithm is proposed, on which the approximations are based. All relevant performance measures can be calculated with errors which are generally less than one percent, when compared to simulation results. \u
The confusing state of the art in top management composition studies: A theoretical and empirical review
The purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical and empirical review of the literature on top management composition. This research is theoretically inspired by the old tradition of group dynamics research and later insights into the effects managers have in shaping the course and fates of organisations. Throughout this paper we will develop a conceptual model linking team composition, behaviour and results. The paper also provides a critical discussion of the empirical findings in relation to the model and identifies some theoretical and empirical shortcomings in the research carried out so far.management and organization theory ;
Apparatus for fabrication of americium- beryllium neutron sources prevents capsule contamination
Modified gloved enclosure is used to fill a capsule with a mixture of americium and beryllium radioactive powders to seal weld the opening, and to test it for leaks. It contains a horizontal partition, vortex mixer, mounting press, welder, test vessel, and radiation shielding to prevent surface contamination
Fluctuating "order parameter" for a quantum chaotic system with partially broken time-reversal symmetry
The functional defined as the squared modulus of the spatial average of the
wave function squared, plays the role of an ``order parameter'' for the
transition between Hamiltonian ensembles with orthogonal and unitary symmetry.
Upon breaking time-reversal symmetry, the order parameter crosses over from one
to zero. We compute its distribution in the crossover regime and find that it
has large fluctuations around the ensemble average. These fluctuations imply
long-range spatial correlations in the eigenfunction and non-Gaussian
perturbations of eigenvalues, in precise agreement with results by Fal'ko and
Efetov and by Taniguchi, Hashimoto, Simons, and Altshuler. As a third
implication of the order-parameter fluctuations we find correlations in the
response of an eigenvalue to independent perturbations of the system.Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX-3.0, 1 figure. Reference added to Y. V. Fyodorov and

The connection between noise and quantum correlations in a double quantum dot
We investigate the current and noise characteristics of a double quantum dot
system. The strong correlations induced by the Coulomb interaction create
entangled two-electron states and lead to signatures in the transport
properties. We show that the interaction parameter phi, which measures the
admixture of the double-occupancy contribution to the singlet state and thus
the degree of entanglement, can be directly accessed through the Fano factor of
super-Poissonian shot noise.Comment: 5 pages, major revision, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Capability of Cherenkov Telescopes to Observe Ultra-fast Optical Flares
The large optical reflector (~ 100 m^2) of a H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope was
used to search for very fast optical transients of astrophysical origin. 43
hours of observations targeting stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars were
obtained using a dedicated photometer with microsecond time resolution. The
photometer consists of seven photomultiplier tube pixels: a central one to
monitor the target and a surrounding ring of six pixels to veto background
events. The light curves of all pixels were recorded continuously and were
searched offline with a matched-filtering technique for flares with a duration
of 2 us to 100 ms. As expected, many unresolved (500 us)
background events originating in the earth's atmosphere were detected. In the
time range 3 to 500 us the measurement is essentially background-free, with
only eight events detected in 43 h; five from lightning and three presumably
from a piece of space debris. The detection of flashes of brightness ~ 0.1 Jy
and only 20 us duration from the space debris shows the potential of this setup
to find rare optical flares on timescales of tens of microseconds. This
timescale corresponds to the light crossing time of stellar-mass black holes
and neutron stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics, 8 pages, 9
