Experimental Investigations and Technical Design for The Time-OF-Flight Detectors in the CR at FAIR
Direct mass measurements beyond the proton drip-line
First on-line mass measurements were performed at the SHIPTRAP Penning trap
mass spectrometer. The masses of 18 neutron-deficient isotopes in the
terbium-to-thulium region produced in fusion-evaporation reactions were
determined with relative uncertainties of about , nine of them
for the first time. Four nuclides (Ho and Tm) were
found to be proton-unbound. The implication of the results on the location of
the proton drip-line is discussed by analyzing the one-proton separation
energies
Mass measurements of very neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes and their impact on rp process nucleosynthesis
The masses of ten proton-rich nuclides, including the N=Z+1 nuclides 85-Mo
and 87-Tc, were measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP.
Compared to the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003 a systematic shift of the mass
surface by up to 1.6 MeV is observed causing significant abundance changes of
the ashes of astrophysical X-ray bursts. Surprisingly low alpha-separation
energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc are found, making the formation of a
ZrNb cycle in the rp process possible. Such a cycle would impose an upper
temperature limit for the synthesis of elements beyond Nb in the rp process.Comment: Link to online abstract:

Observation of Non-Exponential Orbital Electron Capture Decays of Hydrogen-Like Pr and Pm Ions
We report on time-modulated two-body weak decays observed in the orbital
electron capture of hydrogen-like Pr and Pm
ions coasting in an ion storage ring. Using non-destructive single ion,
time-resolved Schottky mass spectrometry we found that the expected exponential
decay is modulated in time with a modulation period of about 7 seconds for both
systems. Tentatively this observation is attributed to the coherent
superposition of finite mass eigenstates of the electron neutrinos from the
weak decay into a two-body final state.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Recent Upgrades of the Gas Handling System for the Cryogenic Stopping Cell of the FRS Ion Catcher
In this paper, the major upgrades and technical improvements of the buffer
gas handling system for the cryogenic stopping cell of the FRS Ion Catcher at
GSI/FAIR (in Darmstadt, Germany) are described. The upgrades include
implementation of new gas lines and gas purifiers to achieve a higher buffer
gas cleanliness for a more efficient extraction of reactive ions as well as
suppression of the molecular background ionized in the stopping cell.
Furthermore, additional techniques have been implemented for improved
monitoring and quantification of the purity of the helium buffer gas
Direct observation of long-lived isomers in Bi
Long-lived isomers in 212Bi have been studied following 238U projectile
fragmentation at 670 MeV per nucleon. The fragmentation products were injected
as highly charged ions into the GSI storage ring, giving access to masses and
half-lives. While the excitation energy of the first isomer of 212Bi was
confirmed, the second isomer was observed at 1478(30) keV, in contrast to the
previously accepted value of >1910 keV. It was also found to have an extended
Lorentz-corrected in-ring halflife >30 min, compared to 7.0(3) min for the
neutral atom. Both the energy and half-life differences can be understood as
being due a substantial, though previously unrecognised, internal decay branch
for neutral atoms. Earlier shell-model calculations are now found to give good
agreement with the isomer excitation energy. Furthermore, these and new
calculations predict the existence of states at slightly higher energy that
could facilitate isomer de-excitation studies.Comment: published in PRL 110, 12250
